Enjoyable but without factual substance
Full of an actor's passion but lacks finite substance. The author would have done well to have read the landmark "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" by Richard Patton before attempting this immense subject. As an actor's piece this could be a tour de force, but as a novel it seems a little too self-conscious. Enjoyable but does little to further our knowledge.

DESIGNED FOR BOTH DOCTORS AND STUDENTS
Accessible and highly useful, the format of "Cecil Essentials of Medicine" is unique. This is one of the few broad-scope medical texts, which used simple language to present advanced information. The book is dynamic; and very easy to understand. Its strengths lie in the methodological manner with which it tackled clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and therapeutics. It gives detailed information in each case, without dabbling into anything that is unnecessary.
Anybody who reads this book will appreciate the depth of its coverage. It is a quality designed: a valuable compilation with both doctors and students in mind.

the right focus
I am a 4th year medical student and have referred to this book contantly on my rotations. i find that the chapters were lucid and covered just the right amount of depth for each topic. Best of all, the authors focused on all the clinically relevant points of each disease which is a must for the busy clinician. Get it now!

Ok, but I'd rather have it in paperback
Much of the Kirkus review was accurate, although, the point that New Agers will find little that resonates is probably the most compelling reason to buy this book. It isn't New Age mystical garbage---I wasn't levitating when I read this book.

Cayce is a fascinating character. Because of his deep faith, he wrestled with the concept of reincarnation and tries to reconcile a biblical explanation for what he experienced in the "life" readings. I found the final chapters of the book more interesting than much of the rest of the book. But it deserves better treatment overall than was given by Kirkus.

A rare glimpse into the mind of a great 20th-century mystic
Have you ever wondered what it might be like to see inside the mind of a great psychic? To be able to access information about people and places that reaches far beyond the physical dimension? Edgar Cayce's biography, expertly compiled by a professional journalist and editor from Cayce's never-before-published autobiographical notes, a personal diary, and lecture records, allows us just such a rare glimpse. Cayce (1877-1945) is the world's best-documented psychic, with over 14,000 verbatim transcripts of 'readings' on topics ranging from health concerns, reincarnation, astrology, spiritual development, earth change predictions, and other metaphysical topics catalogued in the Library of the Association for Research Enlightenment in Virginia Beach, VA.

Edgar Cayce is also known as the "Father of Holistic Medicine," whose unorthodox naturopathic cures, while helping many regain their health who had been given up as hopeless by the medical establishment, once led to his arrest on grounds of practising medicine without a licence.

In "My Life As a Seer," we get to know the Edgar Cayce who struggled with self-doubts regarding his psychic gift, and with concerns about the impact which the information from his readings might have on those who sought his counsel. We meet Cayce the family man, a photographer by profession, whose deep faith sees him through a series of defeats, including the destruction by fire of his studio; the closure, for lack of funds, of the hospital he had spent years trying to build; an eviction from his home; and physical injuries suffered while being the target of a humiliating attempt to expose him as a fraud. Through it all, Cayce remained a sincere and humble man,who was motivated not by fame nor by riches (which eluded him all his life), but by an overwhelming desire to serve God and help his fellow human beings.

"My Life As a Seer," as grandson Charles Thomas Cayce says in the foreword, represents "the first account of Edgar Cayce's life told completely in his own words. He does not dwell on all of the personal aspects of his life, but focuses primarily on those experiences that marked him since childhood as decidedly different from anyone else in his world."

Reading this fascinating book is the closest most of us will come to talking with Edgar Cayce in this lifetime.

Colorado Child Support Handbook: The Parent's Guide to Modification and Collection
Published in Paperback by Bradford Book (1997)
Authors: Charles P. Brackney and H. Thomas Hogan
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

Difficult topic explained well but easily dated
I've had the distinct pleasure of working with Chuck in Colorado's child spport and unfortunately his funny and wonderful personality is difficult to see in this book. Child support is serious business and Chuck has brought it down to the layperson. The topics covered are those that a custodial or non-custodial parent would be interested in pursuing. The only significant topic I believe was missed was how the child support money will flow from the non-custodial parent through the state coffers and out to the family.

Child support is regulated by a very complex set of laws and policies constantly changing. Welfare reform has had a significant impact in changing the regulatory environment. Automation continues to improve and expand options and avenues. Legislation now requires what used to take a couple of weeks to be done in a couple of days. Judicial control has been streamlined to be more administrative in nature. In the three short years since publication, the child support work force in Colorado has grown from 400 to 600 workers to handle the additional tasks. The reader should take great heed in the disclaimer on the copyright page and check everything stated with either a child support or private attorney.

Most states could replace the forms with their own and do a mass change of "Colorado" to their own state name and much of the material would be applicable.

When Chuck says, "If you did not understand the rules...the first time, don't feel bad. It can even take months for lawyers to get this straight," he is absolutely correct. However, his writing is quite clear and patience will be rewarded. Quizes and answers every few pages with extensive examples illustrate most any scenario. Chuck achieves his aim to provide the parents with the knowledge needed to do their own child support work. One only wishes the material could be placed on the internet and kept up to date.

Although some claim you can't find a decent one volume Bible commentary, I've got an accredited B.A. in Theology, and I say you certainly can. The contributors of this commentary are from the highest levels of academia and present material worthy for the pulpit and pew alike.

Good bio of an otherwise neglected admiral
A Different Kind of Victory is - as far as I have been able to ascertain - the only biography of ADM Hart, CinC Asiatic Fleet at the start of WWII. Kept on past retirement age because of the high regard he was held in, he was then brusquely relieved of command when it became clear his task was impossible. The desire to not have an American associated with another defeat so closely following Pearl Harbor led Washington to consent to his replacement as ABDA naval commander by a Dutch admiral, who then threw away all of Hart's remaining forces. Based heaavily on Hart's own monumental diaries, author Leutze manages to salvage Hart's reputation, which had been damaged by politicians and rival US commanders like MacArthur. If any criticism of Leutze can be made, it is that his study is too reliant on Hart's diaries. That does not detract from the achievment the author has made, contributing a well-written study of one of WWII's most misunderstood and maligned naval officers.
