A Neglected Poet
Thomas's "Swinburne" is an acceptable biography, conveying the necessary names, dates and places of ACS's life. The volume, however, is curiously thin, given the monster tomes generated in recent years on Morris, Ruskin and other members of the mid-Victorian set. In covering his territory, one gets the impression that Thomas didn't quite know what to do with the prurient bits of Swinburne's life, alternately dwelling on them and skipping past them. Nonetheless, students of mid-Victorian culture should be grateful for a thoughtful book on so shamefully neglected a poet.

Disappointing at best
With Tom Siebel's reputation as a visionary of One-to-One marketing and a software innovator, this book was obvious, fundamental, and predictable, with very little that hasn't been said better and more astutely by other writers i.e. Evans and Wurstler, Shapiro and Varian. This is a collection of the same old success stories culled from the same old interviews and the same old articles. If you're really interested in the underlying changes in the business world that the Internet brings, read "Information Rules' by Shapiro and Varian or "Blown to Bits" by Evans and Wurstler. Heck, even Bill Gates' book "Business @ the Speed of Thought" had more insight and better stories than this.

Ground-zero starting point for ecommerce business solutions.
Thomas M Seibel and Pat House, co-founders of Seibel Systems share their "trial by fire" incorporation of Internet as marketing channel in their book, CYBER RULES. To overcome most IT-related business phobias (or the fatal business errors of inertia and indecision) it is inherent that companies must evangelize the "newness" of a digital society until it becomes applied as the "norm". Seibel and House break down the overwhelming scope of the ecommerce revolution into common business practices.

These are as follows--Number 1: We are a market society, therefore be good to your market(the customer.) Number 2: Research your development partners (find technically proficient and creative sources to help determine and define your web presence). Number 3: Monitor the development of your spin on the information highway internally with a highly placed and trusted corporate executive (Not everyone in the company must speak "techno-geek." However, one technically adept person on staff is a must.)Number 4: Be good to your customers. Number 5: Determine the application of the web best suited to your business' needs...i.e., define your corporate vision. Number 6: Understand the physical limitations (bandwidth) and the security issues (firewalls) necessary to provide a comfort zone and expediency for your clients. Number 7: Business as usual; did I mention be good to your customers?!

Negotiating the terrain of the Internet is exhilarating, it's frightening, it's powerful. And this is simply as an informational tool. Add to this concept, the complete shift in how we conduct business on our planet, the convergence of cable, modem, fiber optics, video apps and real time solutions the Internet is a medium not to be ignored. CYBER RULES chunks this gloriously terrifying and infinitely liberating means of communicating effectively down into manageable steps for business success.

Easy to read
Tom Siebel describes the musts of ebusiness rules in an easy to understand format

Horrible explanations
This book is not a very in-depth book on the principles of california real estate. It covered topics only very breifly, and really sped through them with not a whole lot of explanation. I would highly advise buying a different book if you intend to pass the CA Real Estate Licensing Exam.

Confusing
Property is a difficult subject, therefore, any casebook on the matter should be clear. This casebook, on the other hand, did more harm than good. Every case was followed up by questions with a list of cases to "see." Most first year law students have hundreds of pages to read every week and will never refer to these other cases. Thus, these questions (which are worded rather obscurely, I might add. The notes seem to be in another language: Latin) are never answered by the student. With a subject like property, it would be more helpful for the casebook to have more straightforward explanations to accompany the cases, as in Singer's casebook

I wish there were something better
I used this book for the last two semesters to teach Introduction to Process Technology.
It does seem to be the best book available although it is filled with errors.

I wish there were something better.

Thomas A. Edison and His Kinetographic Motion Pictures
Published in Paperback by Friends of Edison National (1995)
Author: Charles Musser
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

Edison's apologia
This book is very well written, illustrated and produced; also it is a very good introduction on Edison's contribution to motion pictures but, while it doesn't seem to falsify the actual truth, the author, Charles Musser one of the major historians of early cinema development, bends backwards to exonerate Edison's less than savory practices; to present Edison as the "inventor of motion pictures"; to claim the development of cinema for the US; and to make totally unsupported claims that this was a beneficial turn of events for all cinema / motion pictures!

Semi-Useless
This book is required by my English Composition class. It has served no purpose other than the emptying of my wallet for one of the most useless textbooks I've been required to buy.

Our class is currently using this "reference book" for our MLA format research papers. One part of our grade will consist of correct citations. We were to use this handbook to guide us in this process. However, on pg. 94 there is an error in proper citing which caused great confusion for my fellow students and I.

Along with these small but frequent mistakes is the fact that the entire book is lacking underlines! Most people realize that books should be underlined, but during citing, with pressure and time limits on our backs, little reminders and hints toward what you should underline and corrections over what you should not, are always helpful.

This book is causing more confusion than is needed by any college student. Simple things like this should be corrected before a book is published, assuming that those who wrote and edited the handbook even realize these problems exist.

Do not buy this book. Instead, purchase a previous version. Those, at least, make sense.

HORRIBLE NIGHTMARE OF A BOOK!
Pray that you have a good instructor. The only thing I dislike about my instructor is that she picked this book to use!!!!! If you have a good College Algebra book, I suggest you use it for clearer examples. That's the only thing getting me through at the moment. This book as good as sold (to the next sucker) when this class is over!

One disgraceful textbook
This worthless text, Mathematics with Applications, is certainly the most frustrating book I have ever encountered. In addition, the text is also unclear, and needless to say, unhelpful when it comes to explaining (and understanding) the solutions given for the equation(s). I am very dissatisfied, truly dissapointed, certainly aggravated and furious about this book, the author(s) and the fact that other campuses utilize it. I wish you luck if your class requires you to use this text; perhaps the only thing that could help you through such lesson is an excellent instructor; otherwise, forget about it. This text is not even worth your time, money, effort, and not even a rate of one star.

Mathematics with Applications- students review
The text Mathematics with Applications was one of the worst books I have ever encountered. One of the many problems I experienced when using this text, was the authors inability to give adequate examples of the concepts. The example given in the heading of the sections are not clear, the authors fail to show simple ways to obtain the correct answers. Another weak area in the text was the lack of repetition in each section, ex: sect.14.3 Antiderivatives; the authors will provide problem 1 that requires a certain step to obtain the correct answer (verifiable in the back of the book) Problem #2 the student is left astray, problem #3 will introduce another aspect unlike problem 1 or 2. Learning is developed by practicing a concept on more than one or two problems. By using this text learning the actual concept of calculas throughly will not happen. Calculas is a challenging field and an introductory text should to have an excellent source of examples, clear and concise explanations, and sections with at least 3+ problems with the same concept to assist the new student with practice. This text is also sold with a study guide that is the answer log in the back of the book enlarged and packaged to assist the financial advancement of everyone except for the student. Advice to the buyer, "Don't judge a book by it's cover"
