Information for beginners and for experienced restorers.
Who would have thought that someone would write a book about the exact tractor model that I chose to collect? Why did author Pripps write about this particular tractor? The way he explains it, the first reason is, it's a John Deere! Secondly, it is the perfect size, not too big to handle, but not too small to do some useful work. Third, because there were enough of them built so that parts are still common and affordable. Finally, because there were enough changes and variations over the seventeen year production run that there is something interesting for beginner and expert alike. This is where the book excels; the keyword in the title is "guide". Pripps takes you through the history of the development of the Model B. You not only learn where and when the parts were changed and improved, but also WHY. It's not a "how to do it" book, it tells WHAT you need to do, what's correct, what's incorrect, and what to watch out for. You'll find out how to do an accurate restoration. The entire book is illustrated with clear vintage photographs, excellent shots of recent restorations, and diagrams from actual John Deere manuals from the Model B era. I have been collecting model B's since 1990 and I found the book to be very useful.

Dewey in Context
There are many Dewey biographies, and so finding the right one can be difficult. I particularly like the Westbrook biography, because it places Dewey's thought squarely within the context of his life and times - an approach Dewey himself would have commended. For those of you who are not familiar with Dewey, philosopher of Democracy and Education, have no fear. Although he was a very prolific writer, Westbrook provides the reader with a good introduction to all of Dewey's major works - in itself a great boon for those of us trying to pick and choose select works from the 44-volume beast. Lastly, Westbrook also illuminates much of the history surrounding Dewey's life: including the Sociology Movement of late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Progressive Era, the Great Depression, and both World Wars. A wonderful book about America's most famous philosopher.

An informative and insightful compilation
Ably edited by independent scholar and freelance writer Robert Long, John Huston: Interviews is an informative and insightful compilation of interviews with the late John Huston (which took place from 1952 to 1985) in which he personally comments on his life and projects as an acclaimed filmmaker. Among the movies that are surveyed within this context are The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen, The Night of the Iguana, Prizzi's Honor, and The Dead. The observations range from his approach to directing; the influence of painting upon his camera work, and his association with stellar actors, to his beginnings in Hollywood as a screenwriter, and the influences of James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway upon his movies. Replete with numerous anecdotes about writers, directors, and actors with whom he collaborated, we are presented with a body of work and a filmmaker's life that will be immensely appreciated by students of his work and a man whose personal life was as prodigious as his professional career.

A Major Force with Enduring Influence
In this, the third and concluding volume of his biography of Keynes, Skidelsky offers a brilliant analysis of one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Skidelsky offers a remarkable discussion of the man (as opposed to the icon) whose influence seems to have fluctuated according to conventional (received?) wisdom with regard to fundamental economic principles. Economists have either agreed or disagreed about the value of Keynes's ideas (often with more heat than light) since the publication of his major work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money (1936). As a non-economist, I have only casually observed how his principles have gone in and out of favor as the national economy itself improves, flattens out, weakens, improves, etc. I enjoyed this book because it connected a human being with the principles to which so many others have referred in books and articles. Also because, as international trade accelerates in terms of both scope and depth (largely because of the Internet and the WWW), the role of government in each country will inevitably change...especially governments in those countries which were formerly members of the U.S.S.R. as well as in other countries in Asia, notably China. Thanks to Skidelsky's book, I am now much better prepared to recognize and understand such changes. I wish I had read the second volume in the trilogy (subtitled "The Economist as Savior") before reading this one. Those who read this review are urged to do so. However, judged wholly on its own merits, this final volume (subtitled "Fighting for Freedom") is a first-rate achievement.

When you we get volume 3?
A great book about a great man. The development of Keynes' thought is handled well, although some more discussion around possible sources of some of his ideas would have been welcome. Several books about his Bloomsbury freinds have emerged recently, and it is interesting to compare perceptions. I'm uncomfortable with Skidelsky's analysis of Keynesian theory which strikes me as too much of a shoe-horning of Keynes into a classical framework, but I'm hardly an expert. All in all a book to be savoured, and an essential item in one's library.

Excellent source for those wanting to know how theatre works
This book covers the 1986 season of The Stratford Festival, from the first day of rehearsal of each production. Actually, it starts prior to the season with the selection of John Neville as artistic director.
Mr Gaines has comments from the cast, directors, designers and others that give a real insight as to what goes into putting all the productions together, on both the artistic and financial side.
This is a fascinating look at the world of one of North America's most respected theatre companies.

Every recipe I've tried has been stellar!
I can't say enough nice things about this slim littlecookbook. First, every recipe I've tried has been stellar -- and I'veused the recipes with several dinner parties to rave reviews. Second, I appreciate the organization. Sarich classifies every recipe by seasonability of ingredents, cost of ingredients, and time needed for preparation...very helpful features that I wish more cookbooks shared. Third, I like the lay-flat spiral binding, which makes it handy to use. Fourth, the presentation and photography are beautiful. Interestingly, I've bragged up book to several out-of-town guests, and they've purchased the book (even though they don't live in the Pacific Northwest). Additionally, the indices at the back of the book include wine and food/herbs/spices pairing, wine descriptions, and useful lists of ingredients to have on hand depending on what type of cuisine you tend to cook.

Definitive Tribute to an Important American Artist
At last, John Curry has a book in print worthy of his art. Ms. Junker has suceeded in paying a noble yet sadly overdue tribute to this unique and often neglected artist. Curry's paintings capture the emotion and natural force of American scenes in a way that was very much his own. Works like "Tornado over Kansas" and the scene of John Brown in "A Tragic Prelude" embody some of the greatest expressions of conflict to be found in American art.

An excellent resource on John!
Robert Kysar's book, John the Maverick Gospel, is one of the finest short introductions to Johannine issues ever written over the last half a century. Because of its brevity and clarity, the book is accessible for nonspecialist readers; and yet Kysar's familiarity with the vast array of international secondary literature makes his treatments worth considering for scholars and students alike. Dealing with such topics as John's relation to the Synoptics, John's distinctive Christology (esp. the Father/Son relationship), John's presentations of the Signs-faith relationship, eschatology, and dualism, Kysar introduces his discussions with helpful lists of relevant texts for the reader to explore first inductively. His excellent addition on the presentation of women in the Gospel of John is well worth the price of the book in and of itself! This book is an excellent resource for teaching, and I recommend it enthusiastically.

A Story for the Whole Family
A very well put together child's story written about true to life facts. Will enthrall young readers and children being read to. The story shows how family, although not always enjoying the same interests, can still come together as a family and encourage each other in their individual accomplishments.
I have heard this story many a times prior to this book being published, as it is based on my husband's experience, and it still brings a smile to his face when being discussed.
