Warren's poems are a triumph of the human spirit.
I find most contemporary poetic practice notable only for its miserly concern for the difficulties attendant upon the small, the domestic, the momentary--huge acreages felled only to tell us that someone built a fence in their backyard once, and their husband helped them and the bindweed grew up around it and that was symbolic of relationships enduring and such. I'm therefore ensanguined by Burt's new collection (definitive enough, I should think, to silence the shrieks of Robert Penn Warren harpies), which teaches us that bindweed can't "hold candle to chokeweed," that fences tend "to grow thick with unfencing menses," and that husbands are meaningful only inasmuch as they "lung persevering into the guts of Cromwell." As a result, this collection--under Burt's sprightly editorship --provides a needed corrective; Warren takes an uncompromising view of the suffering subject splayed upon the rack of history, and the results are cheerful and life-affirming. This book made me realize that there's a reason for everything; I will recommend it to my co-workers.

A classic
"Complete Introduction to Parrots" is an abridged version of the classic "Parrots and Parrot-like Birds", by the 12th Duke of Bedford. He was an English lord, and perhaps the most prominent bird breeder in the early 20th century. His books were the state of the art in technical content in their day, although they do not reflect the immense advances in aviculture since then. However, he had an incredible flair for writting amusing anecdotes about the misadventures of his parrots (including truly rare species, like Lear's macaw), which he let fly free in the English countryside. This is why his books continue to be published, long after the other aviculture books of his day have fallen by the wayside, and why they shall continue to be 50 years from now, when the books that are state of the art today have become obsolete and fallen by the wayside.

Complete Poems and Songs of Robert Burns (Collins Classics)

Comprehensive collection of his work
This book contains all Robert's poems, including epitaphs, plus all his song lyrics, but not the sheet music, because he did not compose any music. Of course, there is one song of his, Auld lang syne, which is extremely well known, although not many people are aware that he was its writer. This is not a biography, though some brief historical details are provided. If you want an in-depth biography, you must look elsewhere.

Robert Burns wrote about every topic you could imagine - love, nature, politics, people, anything that was topical in the late eighteenth century. Among the most famous poems are A red red rose (including the line Till a' the seas gang dry my dear), To a louse (including the line O wad the Power some giftie gie us) and To a mouse (including the line The best laid schemes o' mice and men).

The poems and songs are presented chronologically in the order of date written. Personally, I would have preferred the book divided into chapter, with each chapter covering a different theme, but it doesn't really matter. There is an index of first lines as well as an index of titles.

A glossary is provided to allow translation from Scottish to English. People sometimes joke that Britain and America are two countries separated by a common language, but this glossary is a reminder that the same can be said about Scotland and England. I cannot say how easy or difficult you will find the dialect. I was born of Scottish parents so I learned a bit as a child even though I was raised in England. Hopefully, you will most of it reasonably straightforward with a bit of practice. The quality of the poetry makes it well worth the effort.

Within the main book, at the bottom of each page, footnotes are provided to set the context of the poem or song where this is deemed useful. For example, Ballad of the American war has footnotes giving brief details of events between 1775 and 1784, so you will immediately realise that the poem doesn't just focus on the war itself, but also its aftermath.

Best generic text on standards...
This book is written by the co-authors of ASCD's content standards for K-12 education. This book addresses the other side of the coin: performance standards. How shall we evaluate what children do in school? What can teachers do, as part of their standards, to help youngsters perform well?

This is the best generic text in this area. The actual performance standards that you construct will be different--they will be your own--but this book will give teachers ways to begin implementing your standards. (Other sources include Modern Red Schoolhouse, Nashville TN, which has the most elegant methods available.) This book also addresses the needs of principals, curriculum coordinators, and district supervisors.

All in all, a good beginning...

An outstanding work
I finally found myself in that book. I thought I was lost going through big texts of neurosurgery and I could not grasp all the information needed to pass my exam. Now that this amazing book is available I'm sure I will pass the exam . It provides a good frame for studying and contains all one needs to prepare for the neurosurgery exam. It saves time and a lot of effort . I envy younger neurosurgeons because this work is now available at their hands.. study will be much easier.

Contestable Markets and the Theory of Industry Structure
Published in Paperback by International Thomson Publishing (1988)
Authors: William J. Baumol, John C. Panzar, and Robert D. Willig
Amazon base price: $61.50
Average review score:

Essential reading
It's not a textbook, yet might be used as one. It's not exactly a monography, yet ex-post may be considered as one. "Contestable Markets..." is a detailed exposition of a consistent theory of market structure and its determinants. In fact, it's built upon innovative work of late 70s and early 80s that not only provided a new set of tools for examining imperfect market structures, and natural monopoly in particular, but also provided (de)regulatory institutions with much needed theoretical agenda in the 80s.

It is an essential reading for anyone specializing in the field of Industrial Organization. Parts of the book may be of use for the advanced microeconomics course.
