Not for Children
We don't need to see the Little Mermaid's nipples.
(I can never understand why the people who cry out that the nudity is "JUST art!" don't notice that it is never underdressed males, but little girls that we have to look at.)

Amazon.com rates this book for ages 4 - 8, but the text is difficult and violent, and the admittedly lovely art is appropriate for graphic novels in the _Sandman_ vein, not for kids.

Yes, it is a lovely story, yes, it was dark to begin with, and no it is not a children's book.

Good translation, pretty (aside from the gratuitousness) illustrations earn 2 stars.

Most reviews here are NOT about this book!
Sulamith Wulfing's art is gorgeous! Unfortunately, most of the reviews I see here are NOT for her book! They are reviews of the version Rachel Isadora illustrated (see the "nipples" and violence comments); or even for Disney's Little Golden Book adapted from the cartoon. I don't understand why reviews for other versions are displayed here; it's very misleading! If you like Sulamith Wulfing's art, you'll probably like this book.

The best rendering of this story I have ever seen
The Little Mermaid. Illustrated by Sulamith Wulfing; text by Hans Christian Andersen. Translated from the German by Petra Michel.

Sulamith Wulfing is a fantastic artist whose work has been sold as books of plates, calendars, and even decks of cards. This book is special because it is one of the few times that her works illustrate a story. Each page has black and white line drawings and there are ten full page color plates. The color plates are the type of work for which the artist is most known and the ten in this book have been reprinted in her calendars and other collected works. The color is vibrant and the themes of each are sublime. The cover illustration is also the last illustration in the text and shows the mermaid transformed into The Immortal Soul.

An epilog called "The Sacrifice" written by the artist's son, Otto Schulze, states that a new translation of Andersen's story was used and that "parts of the story have been summarized." While staying true to Andersen's original plot, incidents and characters have been left out and parts of the story have been changed. These changes raise the story above being a children's fairy tale and highlight its allegorical theme about the role of love in the quest for immortality. The modified text and the mystical art go together excellently to make this the best rendering of this story I have ever seen. Originally published in German in 1953, this work is as vibrant today as when it was first conceived 50 years ago.

At the end of the book is a brief one page biography of the author with an early photograph of her and a self portrait painted in 1953.

My K Class Loved This Book
Every year a leprechaun visits my classroom. This year she/he left this book. The kids loved it. They felt sorry for the dog and predicted what might happen between the unlikely pair. We talked about the leprechaun's demeanor and feelings. The thing that i heard about most with this book was that "Lucky," the dog, was a girl! This is a very big deal with 5 & 6 year-olds...especially the girls! This book is perfect for St. Paddy's units or getting in the mood for the holiday and talk of wee folk. The illustrations are charming as well.

Magical!
This is a wonderful tale of the unlikely friendship between a lovable dog and a crusty old leprechaun. My almost nine year old daughter loved the pictures in this book.

A wonderful tale of friendship
My daughter loves this heart-warming tale of a cautious leprechaun and his unlikely friendship with an outgoing dog named Lucky. Perfect bedtime reading any time of year.

I Would Say
I would say that it has bright and lovely pictures that you would love! Buy this book for your children!

Lovely pictures from the movie
My four year old son loves this book, mainly because of the large pictures from the movie. These pictures are of an excellent quality. And for the dads (and mums) there's not too much text so you still have an evening left after reading this book before your child goes to sleep!

The Movie is Better.
This book is the offical movie storybook for the movie DICK TRACY. The book is written rather simple and is aimed at middle school aged children. The book has a lot of photographs from the film and a few that didn't make the movie's final cut. The story stays pretty accurate to the movie, but there are a few differences (e.g. the identity of The Blank is not revealed in this book). Fans of the film may enjoy owning this and even today kids enjoy Dick Tracy. There's just something about that cool walkie-talkie wristwatch and the perfect cop.

Pooh for Little and Big People
As are most of the Pooh tales, this story has the ability to touch a youngster with glee, anxiety, and an ending which reaffirms the value and over-riding nature of friendship. For adults, the book reminds us that misunderstandings evoke many pointless meanderings, but when taken with the right attitude, they should teach us something. The simple values of friendship and love are the lessons here.

Disney`s Quasimodo Shows True Friendship
With the Disney animated movie as inspiration for this story and illustrations, lonely Quasimodo, with only a trio of "Three Stooges"- like gargoyles for company, rescues a kitten, who becomes his friend. When he sees the sad little girl who lost the kitten, Quasimodo does what a real friend would do, despite the sacrifice to himself. Of course, there`s nothing like this in the Hugo classic, but it stands on its own as a warm children`s story.

More DRAGON TALES from the creators of "Sesame Street"
More DRAGON TALES from the creators of "Sesame Street". In this story, Zak & Wheezie help Emmy build her dream house. Consistent with the rest of the series, imagination is the key in helping children learn lessons. Sweetly done and a very good edition for your one-four year olds.

Note: if you like this series, keep an eye for DVD releases of Dragon Tales, complete with sing-a-longs.

This is basicly just "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" rewritten into twelve pages, with fully page illustrations. For a children's book, it's pretty good.

The Grumpy Easter Bunny

Great Kid's Book!
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a cute story. It shows kids what it's like to be greedy and grumpy, and that it is not fun to be like that and it doesn't pay to take things from other people if it is not yours. It also shows that when you work hard at something and share it with others, you will feel good about yourself. It helps kids realize the true meaning of love and that when your happy life is much more enjoyable. I think it's a great book for kids to learn from! I would recommend this book for your kids!!

Good choice for read-alouds
Hopper the grumpy Easter bunny learns a few lessons about sharing and responsibility in this charming story. Kindergarten through third grade listeners loved it!

A holiday classic
This adorable Easter story is a family tradition in our home. Hopper is a grumpy bunny who doesn't want to deliver Easter treats. But in the story he learns one of the true meanings of the holiday. A delightful story with beautiful illustrations.
