Great History tool
This is just the sort of thing I would have loved when I was a kid. I'm an adult and I love it anyway. This is a great way to spark a child's interest in history. For someone who already loves studying ancient Egypt it will provide hours of fun. The package is beautiful and makes a wonderful gift.

It's mine! Finally! At last!
First of all, I LOVE ancient Egypt. I saw the kit, and wanted it so bad, it really wasn't funny. Anyway, I first saw this kit at the dia (detroit institute of arts) gift shop over three years ago. It was love at first sight. Then finally two days ago when I went with my dad, I had money, nobody was with us so we could buy stuff without people wanting to get something, so I went up to it, took it off the shelf and hugged it so hard that it wasn't funny. My dad saw me, ripped it out of my hands, put it on the shelf and taunted me about it all the way home. I was bummed. Afterwards I told my mom. She bought it for me the next day! I've had so much fun with it! I love it! It's got to be hard to stuff all of that FUN stuff into one small kit! There's hieroglyphic stamps, a decoder wheel, stuff to make a shibati necklace, a senet game, a book, and tons more! If you're a dad, or mom, and your kid wants this, don't taunt them, there's nothing to taunt. If they have money, let them buy it. If they don't, buy for them for their birthday, or Christmas, or just for a special "What the heck, you can have it" gift!

Memorable - and FUN - Egyptian Adventure
THE highest point of our family's Great Egyptian Semester. It's a sturdy cardboard "chest" that opens up to reveal lots of fun, hands-on stuff to read, play with and make. Items include a hieroglyphic stamp set and holder, papyrus to print on, hieroglyphic code wheel, a Senet game, charts and more.

We bought the Treasure Chest to be a fun part of our family's Great Egyptian Semester, and it proved to be a winner. In fact, demand in our house was so high, we had to regulate the time any one kid could spend with it (Dad played with it at night).

To maintan five stars as the rating for this fine novel
Having visciously ensnared every opinion as yet posted upon this board, I am inclined to agree.

I also am of the opinion that this is the greatest book that I have ever read only just after the beastly beatitudes (also by JPD). And, I too wanted to be like Mr Smith the thought that he can have everything that he wants was at first, inconcievable that JPD can have created a character who can be capable of all success and ambition, so unlike Balthazar B.

So I pondered, what does he want and can he have it?

What does he want? He wants Miss Tomson and gets her in a way. He wants to be able to handle himself and he gets this. He wants to feel power and will once he dies but until then, he has to make do with the sound of thirtyfive thousand cheers.

So, yes I now agree that he can have most all which he desires. Naturally one wants to feel welcome, now I feel awkward Sorry for spouting I feel;

all dog all dead

Insanely Perfect
I wish I had written this book, but I didn't, so I'm glad he did. On the rare occasion I bring the title up I am not surprised to find that no one's ever even heard of it's author. I wish someone had so we could say to eachother "god, that's a freakin great book. Straight right man." and laugh inside our souls.

It's a perfect story, but not the kind I would read to my nieces or buy for my grandmother. I still recommend it to anyone who has ever thought that something's not quite right and they can't decide if the people they meet are really as convoluted and arrogant as they think, or if maybe it's just them.

Anyone wants to read the greatest book of their life, well this might be it, so don't think too hard and try it.

Hail to the King J.P. Donleavy

humor that cuts like a knife.
Donleavy's humor insists there is something to laugh about in this world, but then you realise that what you are laughing out-loud at is, at best, something disgusting, or rude, or utterly insane... chicken soup for the soul.

lovely and interesting
Although you can tell this is definitely a young adult book, it was an interesting read. I've never read any Dinotopia books before, and I decided to read this after seeing Dinotopia on tv. The illustrations in this book are gorgeous. The author skipped over a lot of details, turning this into a really bare-bones story, but it was still a good read.

A pale shadow of its predecessor.
As the sequel to the original Dinotopia, this book is something of a disappointment. The art is still as incredible and magical as ever. The perspective, however, has been dropped from first person to third-a very poor transition. The happy, warm suspicion that lingers in the back of your mind, telling you to believe in this peaceful island, is lost completely and leaves the story cold and even a little sappy. The art alone-for this IS an art book-keeps my rating up at 4 stars, and the fanciful tale and explanation of how the fateful journal came to leave the island is enjoyable enough.

James Gurney is the best writer I have read about.
When I first read Dinotopia, I just enjoyed the pictures. But now, I wish that I was in Dinotopia. I wish I was a skybax rider, soaring high above the clouds. James Gurney makes his world seem real, so real that you can almost reach out and touch it. Because of his beautiful paintings, you are "reborn" into a wondreful fantasy world. I am only 12, but my love of Dinotopia has sprouted, just like shipwreaked humans on the island. I have read both books, plus I have read all the paperback books. Instead of the views of Will and Arthur Denison, the paperback books give you a different perspectave of life on Dinotopia. Like in "River Quest", the book gives a perspectave of a young 13 year old girl, who becomes the rainwater habitat partners and how Mangolia and Paddlefoot recover the Polongo River. If anyone likes the detailed, wonderful world of Dinotopia, I recommend reading the Dinotopian series as well.

All Creatures Great and Small/All Things Bright and Beautiful

Very visual - - A ton of fun
Mr. Herriot's journey through life as a veterinary surgeon is a heart-warming tale. As he goes about day to day, he meets some difficult tasks and is challenged by them. He pulls through almost all of them with extreme care towards the animals that are loved by many. He shows compassion while going about the work that many would get sick to their stomach just thinking about it. An awesome story.

Tremendously enjoyable read
I have been reading excerpts of 'All Creatures Great and Small' in publications such as 'Reader's Digest' for years and have always enjoyed them. When I came across a hardcover copy of the two combined books on the sale table at the local mall, I bought it. Let me tell you, the excerpts didn't do it justice. James Herriot is a superb writer, combining humor, insights, sadness...the list can go on and on. He writes as if he's sitting right next to you talking directly to you. I caught myself tearing up in some places and belly-laughing in others. I had such a good time reading it that I now own all of his books (except for the children's books).

Lovely
This is a feel-good book - the sort of book that gives you that warm-and-fuzzy-feeling' - the sort of book that convinces you that there is still hope for this sad-world-of-ours. I make it a point to read this book at least once a year.

James Herriot is successful not because of the beauty of his sentences or the brilliance of his plot, but for the warmth he radiates. He handles the humourous and the poignant with equal ease, and sometimes you wonder why he ever became a vet when he had such a wonderful gift with words. Perhaps it was just as well.

All Creatures Great and Small is, along with 'Every Living Thing' my favourite of his books. He manages to achieve a perfece balance between simplicity and originality - something so many writers fail to do. If I ever visit England, I know I have just _got_ to see the Yorkshire Dales, if for no other reason than that this was where James Herriot lived and worked.

The Best Arkham House Collection
This is the best Lovecraft edition for those who have been acquainted with Lovecraft and like his writings. Definately the best of the Arkham House collections and is the first of the Arkham House books to get. Probably not the best for those unfamiliar with Lovecraft just because of the cost.

This collection includes my favorite Lovecraft story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", as well as the wonderful stories "The Call of Cthulhu" and "The Dunwich Horror". Some of the other better stories include "The Music of Erich Zann" and "Pickman's Model". Robert Bloch's introduction is a nice supplement to Lovecraft's writings. Highly recommended, but I also recommend buying additional Lovecraft because this collection does leave out some Lovecraft gems(i.e. "At the Mountains of Madness").

One of Lovecraft's best volumes - hard to find!
It's not fair to call Lovecraft a horror writer, as from his pen have come some of the most beautiful pieces of literature ever. Tales of the macabre, the ancient, the unspeakable. His narrative style draws you in immediately, engulfing you with the rich atmosphere of the Cthulhu Mythos. Some of Lovecraft's best works are collected in this volume - The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kaddath, The Shunned House, as well as numerous short stories. Whether you're a nouveau fan or an old aquaintance, pick this book up

Classic horror at it's best
It's been said that Lovecraft is the only legitimate heir to Edgar Allen Poe in the field of American horror stories. Anyone who has read this collection of his best stories will have a hard time disputing this claim.

I first read THE DUNWICH HORROR & OTHERS when I was 12 years old and, though I may not have had much contact with Lovecraft's writing since, I have carried these tales with me. His writing informed my entire outlook on writing and "Weird Tales". For years afterward I was obsessed with his stuff. It's great to finally go back and re-discover him after all this time. To my surprise, the stories are just as wonderful as ever. I feared that they would not age well, would seem hokey and dated.

...Guess that 12 year old was a pretty decent judge after all.

Highest recommendation.

Great!!!
Excellent for Bible College Students or Reviewing certain times in Biblical History.

A Great Resource
I am very glad that I decided to purchase this book. The bible can get very repetitious and confusing. This book helps bring the history and chronology on the bible into place. It isn't cheap and isn't the easiest to read but I'm glad I have it. It's bulky so it's not the easiest to carry around. This is not meant to be a bible that you take to church and use when you want to follow along in scriptures. Though you could use it for that, but you'd go crazy.

A chronological look at the scriptures and a comparisson of the various tales that different biblical writers told. it's nice to see the stories of Moses and Jesus, as told by different books, side by side. Comparing how the gospels differ in style is really interesting and you really get a feel for the writers. This is original King James, so the writing can be difficult to get through at times. The year is mentioned at the beginning of each story. This bible is very easy to follow through and easy to navigate. there are numerous indexes so you can search by year, bible chapter, or story. This is a great bible that I'm glad i have as a resource and highly recommed to others.

A necessity for Chronolgical Bible Storying

An Enormous Achievement
Written by America's most inventive poet, "The Enormous Room" is a book of prose set in a French detention camp during World War One. It is a coming-of-age story in which events happen, not always to the narrator (E.E. Cummings), but to the inhabitants of a place that serves as a microcosm for all the folly and brutality of war itself. As a war narrative it is unique -- unlike Hemingway's "Farewell to Arms" or Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front," the central story doesn't take place on the front lines. The plot of the book is basically non-linear, with the exception of the first three or four chapters, and several passages are written in French (thankfully a glossary of foreign terms is printed at the back of the book). I would describe Cummings' story as a stream-of-consciousness dialogue with himself, written in the language of a talented budding poet. Most memorable are the wonderful characters Cummings encountered during his short stay at La Ferte Mace, the name of the camp in which he was interned. They are objects of torn humanity and how terrible it must have been for him to leave them, knowing that upon his release many would languish in prison for the rest of their lives. "The Enormous Room" is a unique historical fiction. It is not an easy read, but it is one of those books that is even more difficult to put down. I have never read another book quite like it. [P.S.: There are two editions of the book, one published by Boni & Liveright and the other by Penquin Classics. The Liveright edition is the better one (and naturally harder to locate online or in book stores), and includes samples of drawings that Cummings made during his confinement.]

A Delectable Mountain
Some works of literature that I have read in the past required several scans of certain passages due to their thick and wholly unconsumable nature. While reading E. E. Cummings' The Enormous Room, I found myself skimming back over entire paragraphs simply for the sheer joy of reading them again. Cummings' ability to turn a phrase is astonishing. It's not hard to glean from reading only this work that the author has a poetic nature.

The personal journey recounted here amounts to a fantastic tale that happens to be (for the most part) completely true. By turns, bleak and hopeless - then joyous and brimming with a kind of spiritual joy, The Enormous Room takes the reader to extremities of all sorts in its relatively short span of chapters.

Though it takes place during a three month stint in a French concentration camp during the latter parts of World War One, it could just as well be set on another planet, for all of its fantastic characters, settings and behavioral interactions that never cease to alternately amaze and confound the reader.

Even if it seems a cruel statement to make, after having the pleasure of experiencing this world through the prose of E. E. Cummings you will be thankful that he found himself in this squalid and vile place so that we now have the honor of sharing in it.

Cumming's Salvation...
Reading Cumming's poetry was never a priority in my school days, except such excerpts as appeared in my far from comprehensive American Lit book. After reading this, I wish I'd paid more attention to this truly gifted writer.

The Enormous Room is the story of Cumming's three month incarceration at La Ferte Mace, a squalid French prison camp. Cummings is locked up as accessory to exercise of free speech, his friend B. (William Brown) having written a letter with some pro German sentiments. What Cummings experienced in those three months and the stories of the men and women he met are, despite the straits of the polyglot texture of the book, never other than fascinating. At moments touching (the stories of the Surplice and The Wanderer's family), hilarious (the description of the Man In the Orange Cap is hysterical), and maddening (the smoking of the four les putains), this is a brilliant weft of memorable characters and not a little invective for the slipshod French goverment.

Something I noticed. Though the book claims as its primary influence Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, I noticed a similarity with Thoreau's Walden. In both books, there is the idea of self-abnegation breeding liberty and peace of mind. The idea is to shear away all luxuries, all privileges. But Thoreau had one very important luxury to his credit: Free will. Whereas Thoreau chose his isolated and straitened existence near Walden Pond, Cummings' was involuntary. So, if the touchstone of freedom both men share is valid, is not Cummings, by virtue of the unrequested nature of his imprisonment, the freer of the two men?

This is a fascinating, thought provoking, ribald and intelligent book. I only regret that the Fighting Sheeney was never given commupance...

Must be an acquired taste
I got this book as a Christmas gift along with a painting by the artist. He's a good artist. Make no mistake about that. But you'd better be an ardent gamer to really enjoy his subject matter.

Beautiful art -- with a sense of humor
James Christensen's art can be funny on one page and thoughtful on the next. Christensen has the uncanny ability to take you into his pictures -- even when there are fish floating about. One of my favorites is "Lawrence Pretended Not to Notice That a Bear Had Become Attached to His Coattail". Yes, that's the title. There is a cute story on the same page. A grade school student attempts to find the theme in this piece - with only partial success. This book will remind you that heartwarming is more than an adman's phrase. After all, when was the last time you actually opened one of those fancy art books you've got on your coffee table? This is one you'll _read_.

AMAZING
Journey of the Imagination is a wonderful table top book. It is a beautiful discussion peice. James Christensen's art is filled with passion that is vibrant and thrilling. Every piece of art is amazingly detailed and done with brilliant colors that thrill the eye. This book has a mixture of his fantasy art and his allegorical artwork. I prefer his fantasy art, but both are great and done equally well. This book is a must have for any art lover, especaially those who love fantasy art. My only complaint about this book is that it does not include "Sisters of the Sea"--Christensen's mermaid painting. However, you can get that one in Voyage of the Basset by Christensen. While the two books do double up on a few art pieces, each stands on its own merit and anyone who loves his art must have both.

Who's KiddingWho?
My opinion of Jonas probably would not persuade anyone to read his works. But as I'm not aloud to review my own publications I certainly don't think James W. Drury should be allowed to give his opinion on this book since his name is credited as helping put the book into the media. Just as my opinion would not be any different than Henry Ford writting an opinion on a ford product.

THE VIRGINIAN says everyone should read this book!
In spite of the fact that my name's already listed above, from the forward I wrote for Legend of the Tumbleweed, I just had to get in here and put another note.

To those of you who might remember me, I used to play the Virginian on TV. So I've had lots of experience with different western stories. This is one of the best I've ever read. It's written all in first person, but by several different people. I had never seen that done in a western novel before, but it was extremely effective.

I would recommend this book to anyone. It is clean, with no sex, very little cussing, and no graphic violence. But it reads very realistically, all the same, without the offensive material. I can't say enough good about it. They didn't put my entire forward on this site, but if you get a chance to read the book you'll see everything I really think about Kirby Jonas and his books. I don't think he could write a bad book.

READ THIS BOOK. YOU'LL THOUROUGHLY ENJOY IT!

Read them all!
Make sure to read my other reviews on Kirby Jonas's books. They are all great. The fact that James Drury, one of my heroes from old time western television, recommended them sold me all the way. Kirby Jonas is better even than Louis L'Amour. He's the best western writer and maybe the best writer period that I've ever read. Don't miss this book.
