This story is a cute variation of The Gingerbread Man with a Spanish twist. My students enjoy reading the story and comparing it to The Gingerbread Man. My only problem with this book is the use of the traditional name for a donkey. It makes it hard to share with children because they don't understand that that word has another meaning. I wish the author had just used "donkey". Cute illustrations too!

The story is of a woodcutter that discovers hidden treasures of a band of robbers and brings riches to his family. The book is wonderfully illustrated with color, a very enjoyable story line and a fun read. This is a more popular Arab story that children will enjoy. This book is also available in Spanish for any teachers that may be looking for literature to include into their multicultural classroom.

This book is bit graphic for young children--a horse's head is cut off and hung on a gate post. I do read this book to my second grade class but I do a bit of my own editing as I go along. Children love fairy tales and aside from the graphic content in a couple of places this book is a good bargain.

This is a take off on the Ukranian~Russian folktale called 'Salt' in the Childcraft 1954 series. However, this tale about onions concentrates on greed as motivation for commerce. Salt begins with a ninny who doesn't want to work, and then the hero wants a good reputation and chooses wisdom and work. The funny ending of Onions induces the reader to laugh at another's misfortune. The images are graphic. Businessmen or merchants are modeled as people who shouldn't be kindhearted or generous. 2 stars because it is an okay read. I recommend the original 'Salt' which gets 5 stars with a real 'marries the princess and lives happily ever after' satisfying ending.
