Taylor concentrates on the influence Germans divided history and expansion into Slavic areas had on their actions toward other nations. Not everyone will like his thesis, but it deserves a hearing. The book, which was long out of print, is well written, making it a pleasure to read.

Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads

If you can hum "Home On the Range", you have been influenced by this book. Without it, folk music as you know it would be different. Seeing in 1908 that the cowboy's way of life was dying, John Lomax went out into the field and onto the range recording and transcribing This collection became the backbone of American folk music and its traditions. Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote the preface, was so impressed with the result that he created the Folk Song Dept. of the Library of Congress and made John Lomax its first curator.
Many songs first saw print here including "The Chisolm Trail" and "The Zebra Dun". Were it not for this book, "Home On the Range" and "Down In the Valley" would have passed into the ether and out of the collective conciousness.
The only flaw is that of the 200+ ballads collected here, there are tunes provided for only 50. This was somewhat remedied by the second edition, same title, by John and Alan Lomax (his son, who succeded his father at the Library) published in 1938. And while many of the ballads are now familiar, many are not. Add the fact that each song is likely to have many more verses than are found in modern songbooks and you have a valuable reference work as well. Balladiers are still mining the treasures. The knowlege that these verses were published in the waning days of the Wild West, before the first cameras rolled in Hollywood, makes for insightful reading about a life which is no more.
Collectors and folk enthusiasts no longer have to pay exorbitant prices to obtain a copy of this important volume. I won't say what my copy of the 1910 printing (the only other available!) cost me, but I can assure you that $75 is a bargain by comparison.

Death in the Funhouse: John Barth and Poststructural Aesthetics (Studies in Literary Criticism and Theory, Vol 2)
Published in Paperback by Peter Lang Publishing (1995)
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Not enough has been written about John Barth. This book pulls what has been said already together in an enlightening way. It helps if you know a little about literary theory. If not, you can just skip the first two chapters. The part about Lost in the Funhouse is especially enlightening.

The Effectiveness of Methadone Maintenance Treatment: Patients, Programs, Services, and Outcome
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (1991)

I have had the pleasure(if you want to call it that) of being on the so called state addiction for almost 12 years, and in my opinion we were made to be their lab rats to test this so called wonder drug on,and let me tell you this right from the outset IT DOES NOT DO WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO. They tell you that there is no side effects-WRONG there are plenty, but I'll let you find this out for yourselves. No, I'm not being cruel, but if you end up being put onto methadone,my advice to you is to get off it as quickly as you possibly can. There is also a good side to it,that being no more stealing, no more injecting with other people's tools, and you get your fix for nothing eveyday without fail. But you must sign a Contract telling them that you will become a slave to their every whim etc. Me myself have been on 200mls for almost 4 years, and I must pick this up and drink it in front of the chemist and whoever else happens to be there at the time. To be truthful I wish they had gave me the choice of Heroin in cigarettes,I would have jumped at the chance. A) Because it is a lot easier to come off than methadone B) The withdrawel period is not anything like what it is coming of green ginger. C) Their seems to be a lot more help coming off heroin than there is coming of the juice. D) There is no need to become an expert liar just to get what you actually need, and not what they think you need. E) There is a big difference between what you actually need and what you end up getting. Well this was just a few words from someone who has been down the rocky road of METHADONE>see yous all later surf dudes@

Take it from someone who hates Economics, this CD is a lifesaver! I had a required Macroeconomics class last semester. As I was afraid of, I was struggling in the class right from the beginning. The prof's only office hours were during times that I had other classes going on, so I couldn't get any extra help from him. I tried a tutor, but his explanations didn't make any more sense the the prof's. Then a friend who'd already taken the class told me about this Cogito Learning Media CD that she had used. I bought a copy and went straight to the topics that I hadn't been able to understand. It made a world of difference! Finally, it was explained to me in a way that was understandable and even interesting. This CD became my best friend during that class. I don't know what I would have done without it!

"Folk Song USA" (also published under the title "Best Loved American Folk Songs")contains 111 American ballads as collected by John A and Allan Lomax. Many of these songs were first printed in other John Lomax books including "Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads" as words only or words with melody only. Unlike previous books from the Lomaxes that presented these ballads as poetry (how can one have a song without the melody?), this book was meant to be sung! Each song has simple piano arrangements by Charles and Ruth Crawford Seeger with guitar chords supplied by Pete Seeger. The short description, giving its known history and how John Lomax first encountered it, often offers valuable insights on rural American life before WWII. Like most Lomax books, these ballads have more verses than are typically found in other collections. This book is found in both hard cover (under both titles)and paperback as "Folk Song USA". If I was to recommend one folk song book only for the average library, this would be it. Highly recommended!

Histological & Histochemical Methods: Theory and Practice
Published in Hardcover by Pergamon Press (1990)
Amazon base price: $105.00
Average review score:

I own 10 manuals of histochemical and histological technique. I use this one 4 times as often as the other nine together. Kiernan describes most useful techniques well. His own neurological technique is unbeatable. He discusses dye chemistry thoroughly, and discusses staining mechanisms well. On top of all this, the book is an incredible bargain at [money] for the paperback.

This is an unbeatable overview of the state of the holographic art. There are chapters covering basic information such as what holograms are and how they are made, and guest articles from innovators in the field, who detail their progress in such areas as adding color to holograms, applying holography to fabric, developing new holographic films and photo-reactive crystals, and producing various types of holograms by the dot matrix or photo-resist mathods, among others. Technical details are explained clearly, in language a non-physicist can understand. It contains an international directory of players in the holographic field, including artists, producers, distributors, collectors, museums, equipment and supply manufacturers, and researchers. As well as written information, it features many examples of embossed holograms, including on the cover a full-color image done by a new process developed by Dai-Nippon printing of Japan- arguably worth the entire cost of the book itself. ....
