Dallimore is a master of biography. It grips you from the first page. It took me 2 weeks to read the first volume, 4 days to read the second. This is exciting stuff and makes you long for someone like Whitefield to appear today. Dallimore brings the period to life, puts Whitefield in his place as the more significant man than Wesley, and shows his great humility and constant labours. It is no wonder Whitefield died at 56. This is THE Christian biography to read. Don't worry about the length, it's wonderful.

In place of my Bible, no other books in my library have my heart like Dr. Dallimore's two volume biography on the Rev. George Whitefield. Dr. Dallimore spent 10 years writing the first volume. The demand from all over the world to have a second volume prompted Dr. Dallimore to resign his pastorate of over 20 years and proceed to spend the next 15 years writing the sequel. It is a masterpiece.

He travelled to England five times in his research and is known around the world as the Whitefieldian expert. Dr. Dallimore was 86 years old when he died on March 20, 1998, in Cottam, Ontario, Canada. I had the blessed opportunity of meeting Dr. Dallimore and his dear wife, May, on two occasions late in 1997. Every Christian ought to have all of Dr. Dallimore's books on their bookshelf, but especially "George Whitefield." Reading these books was like talking with a good friend.

Rarely has a book ever changed my life. This one did. If you think that John Wesley was the biggest figure in history during this period, this book is a must read, and you will find that Mr. Wesely was just the biggest organizer. The book was two volumes of approx. 600 pages each, but when I finished the book, I wished the book was longer.

I originally purchased this book in 1979, a year after it was first published. I have had to buy it again because my original paperback simply fell apart. Thoughtful, thorough, witty and absolutely fascinating, R.V. Jones is one of the people I would most have liked to meet during my lifetime (he passed away in 1997). I can't recommend this book highly enough.

The author as a relatively young man was the technical intelligence director for the British Royal Air Force in WW II. As such he was involved in the development of active, passive, and counter measures to thwart the German Luftwaffe.
Developments included radars, anti ship missiles,jet engines, defense against buzz bombs, and the jamming of radio navigation systems used by the Germans.
After the war the author returned to Scotland to become a university professor. He returned to service during the Korean War period. His other book Reflections on Intelligence reveals him to be a man of erudition and covers and fills in some of the gaps in the story told herein which could not be revealed at the time this book was written.
Another one for the complete shelf of intelligence classics.

Everything I have read by Jones so far has been 5-star. He is lucid, literate, articulate, has much to tell and tells it unpretentiously and clinically, but without sacrificing anything in passion or wit. He is in no way a braggart or poseur, but does not let inappropriate modesty inhibit his telling of what is to be told. His warmth and humour leaven the narrative and add to the perspective without ever cheapening the subject matter. At the same time a proper British reserve (no cliche and no sarcasm, this is precisely what I mean) plus his respect for confidences, not to be betrayed even by untoward hints, move me to wonder how much more he could tell if only it were tellable.

The books are written with a naturalness which belies their density of information. Only an expert in the subject matter (which in this case means a qualified scientist and a good deal besides) could have written them. They are part of the tradition of the finest 20th century British non-fiction. There has been a great deal of rubbish in that genre of the period, both in content and in style, but it has included the likes of Peter Medawar, John Maynard Smith, George Orwell, John Masters, Churchill, and of course, R.V. Jones. On the one hand Jones' books are refreshing reading in an age of faction and pabulum; on the other they are precious historical material which gives the lie to much questionable stuff which otherwise would go unquestioned.

A very fascinating read. As a classic movie fan, I enjoyed reading about the existence of these films. The photographs and lobby cards provide a sneak peek into a historical time.

There are directions and other info for finding and visiting lighthouses. They do not always show all lights for a given area. The photos are all color. I own 3 of these books. There are not many other guide books out there so if you are looking for guide books these are good to have...

I am a lighthouse lover and this book is the best refence book for lighthouses of California. It leaves very little out and is quick and easy to read. Perfect for the coffe table or bedside table. I recommend this whole line of lighthouse books to everyone.

This book is incredible! From the first page onwards I was hooked! I would reccomend this for anyone who is interested in the life and times of good ol' George Fox. This book will grip you and suck you in and you will not be able to stop reading until the very VERY end! A fine choice for Fox fans both new and old. To sum it up in one word: magnificent! This Journal will forever remain my ALL TIME favourite book. Get it today, before you miss out!

George Fox, 1624-91, is sometimes called the "founder" of the Religious Society of Friends, a group that established itself in the 1650s. Early on, they called themselves Children of the Light and Friends of the Truth. As the group spread from the North of England into the south, they became known as Quakers, a name which stuck and is still used today. In the early years, Fox was one of several strong personalities most closely identified with the movement. Later, facing severe persecution and with the death of other early leaders, the Friends accepted Fox's institutional guidance, and he helped the movement to consolidate and survive through to an era of somewhat greater tolerance toward the end of his century.

Certainly Fox never set out to start another "religion." He hoped simply to open the hearts of everyone to the leading of the divine Spirit, without allowing the existing distinction of clergy and laity. His journal, composed years after most of the events covered, retains Fox's direct, down-to-earth form of ministry. The language is not flowery, yet it brings up deep and powerful spiritual ideas, with strong imagery that still sparkles in Quaker language.

"Now the Lord God opened to me by His invisible power that every man was enlightened by the divine Light of Christ, and I saw it shine through all; and that they that believed in it came out of condemnation to the Light of life, and became the children of it; but they that hated it, and did not believe in it, were condemned by it, though they made a profession of Christ. This I saw in the pure openings of the Light without the help of any man; neither did I then know where to find it in the Scriptures; though afterwards, searching the Scriptures, I found it."

This edition of Fox's Journal was abridged and edited by Rufus Jones in the early part of the last century, thus making it more accessible to a wider audience. However, some who dwell on the theological nuances and regard Fox as authoritative find this edition disappointing. (The John L. Nickalls edition of Fox's Journal is regarded as definitive.) Rufus Jones provides a helpful introduction, presenting briefly his own idea that Fox raised to a new level an already widespread movement of grassroots mysticism.

My 4-year-old son Sam has had this book for more than a year, and still enjoys reading it. There are lots of pictures that parents and children can explore together and talk about, and the text is straightforward and clear. I'd like to find more like this!

This book is very entertaining for children ages 7 to 10. It is detailed, informative, and clever. It uses words that children understand, and the pictures are terrific. If you have a child who wants to know the details of how things are made, this is a great resource. I only wish that George Jones would write more books similar to this one.

This is a well-done, balanced look at survey results of America's spirituality.

Beginning with what is spirituality, this work consistently brings forth the "up and down" side to each point. The opportunities along with the obstacles are well documented and discussed using many angles and viewpoints.

There are many nuggets to be mined and prayed over with Biblical discernment. A random sample: "Americans face constant temptations to pass over the wisdom of the ancients in favor of the guru of the month." "The interest in spirituality in itself, ... is not an unalloyed cuase for rejoicing. But it provides a starting place for conversation." "God may be bringing a faitful remant into deeper levels of discipleship that will enable them to endure in a culture that for all its spirituality seems to become post- or even anti-Christian." "More is needed than urgent words; postmoderns insist on authenticity; faith sharing must grow out of a larger life and witness. Its claims to truth must be buttressed with a changed life, with an experienced and personally felt faith."

I found this read to be an important one is the continuing look at trends and movements. Gives one much to ponder and pray and discuss.

I believe Gallup and Jones have written a book that may impact churches in the same way that Tom Peter's book on excellence impacted the business community years ago.

Obviously, God has His hand on George Jones. Maybe George should've waited a few more years to write this book so that he could've included yet another astonishing chapter--his survival of the horrendous car accident he was in, in March of '99. This man is truly blessed with a magnificent voice and many second chances. I thank God that He has allowed George to remain with us these many years and bring us so much happiness. When you read this book, you'll know exactly what I mean when you see what all George has been through in his 68 years.
