The Trial of Don Pedro Leon Lujan: The Attack Against Indian Slavery and Mexican Traders in Utah

Recommended for Native American & Mormon History studies.
The Trial Of Don Pedro Leon Lujan is an explication of data surrounding a controversial Indian slave trading case in 1851 in Utah. Sondra Jones presents a corrected picture of the issues of slave trading and Indian slave trade in the West, specifically the Four Corners area. The complexities underlying this historic trial are revealed in a vigorous review of documents and evidence relating to the trial. Findings are contradictory and contrary to cultural assumptions of the stereotypic corrupt Mexican slaver's guilt. Mormon tendencies to intrigue, slave trade involvement, and racial prejudice figure heavily in the sequence of events. To answer the question, Was this a fair trial and how would the history of Indian (and other) slavery have been different were it otherwise, read on. Much that is surprising in this history review will arise, causing a rethinking of some of the known racist tendencies of the dominant culture. This could not have been an easy book to write. This book will be of interest to Mormon history scholars as well as Native American and perhaps mesoamerican studies.

Review of "Walk Softly and Carry a Big Idea"
I think this is an excellent book for anyone who is working. As a designer of programs for managers and executives I keep track of the current market and read or scan most of the books published, and there are some good ones. This book is a fictional story that carries a truly big idea. Imagine if you could have it all--a way to succeed at work without giving up your life. Jones' book provides seven profound lessons you can apply immediately to improve the relationships you have not only at work but in your private life as well. This is a book for real people with real problems. As the story unfolds, you are able to analyze the problems and are guided into discovering realistic answers. Those answers can help managers make choices that will serve them not only in their business settings but in their personal lives as well.

A very fine survey of differences
Lilith Jones' beautiful, warm drawings are realistic and fine accompaniments to this simple story of various baby animals who don't resemble their parents. Animal mothers and babies are profiled in You Don't Look Like Your Mother, a very fine survey of differences.

LIKE BEING THERE
This work is perfectly sequenced and thoroughly documented, mainly because the author kept a detailed diary during this period. Years later, her diary, plus archived news reports and a great writing style combined to produce this searing expose. It is the story of the 1957-1958 integration attempt at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, as seen through the eyes of a participant, one of the Little Rock Nine, Melba Patttilo Beals.

In WARRIORS DON'T CRY, it's heartwrenching to read of the actual daily brutality and torture of kicks, slaps , spitting, sprays and verbal abuse that these children suffered. The events that occurred at this timne made an unerasable mark of violent racist psyche on the multi-colored design that composes America's people. This book is also emotional because it is easy to see that those in power could have made the transition to integration a much smoother and less painful step into an inevitably better social structure.

This was a hard read. I had to put it down several times because the visualization was just too intense, the bigotry and viciousness too unadulterated. Yet, I think it's something every American needs to read so that the actions contained in this book will never be repeated.

A book for college that I actually loved
I was assigned to read Warriors Don't Cry for a college history course. I assumed from the start that it was going to be an absolutely crummy book and that I should start reading it early or I would never finish it. I did start reading early, but it only took me 2 days to read Warriors Don't Cry. The book is a beautifully told story of the author's (Melba Pattillo Beals)own trying experience as one of the nine brave teens who saught to end segregation in public schools. Warriors Don't Cry is a tremendous example of a young African-American girl coming of age under some of the most horrible circumstances any American has ever had to face. Yet Beals does not leave the reader feeling a sense of hopless desperation despite the situation she herself faced. Beals guides the reader through her experience, often leaving subtle reminders through the eyes of a teenager that all people are equal, that there will always be hope for our nation and for all people who seek to do what is right. I would recommend this bood to anyone. It is a beautifully told story that is easy to read. If anyone should find this on a reading list, I promise that it is definately every bit worth your time and that this book is a shining example of a teacher's excellent choice! (I never knew that it was possible for a teacher to assign a good book!)

WARRIORS DONT CRY REVIEW
I give Melba Patillo Beal's novel Warriors Don't Cry two thumbs up. Warriors Don't Cry is an inspirational, moving account of Melba and the Little Rock Nine's ordeal integrating Little Rock High School. Being spat at, kicked, egged and fearing for their lives was a typical day at school for these nine brave black students. Things happened to Melba (one of the nine selected), her family and the other eight which are hard to imagine. This is a book about how cruel people can be sometimes, and Melba and her families struggle to survive her year at Central.

Segregationists would do just about anything to prevent the Little Rock Nine from returning the next day. Day after day was torture for them. Today if you are attacked you can fight back. The black students were harassed, physically abused and could not do a thing about it, without getting kicked out of school for good. Although slow at times, this book is an easy to read book, mainly revolving around what was happening to Melba at school, home and in her community. Also, the hardships of the other eight students. I was both surprised and angry that no one was backing her on her decision to integrate. Not even her own people! Although a few good, kind people helped her along, mostly she was alone. A fifteen year old girl being abused by students, their parents and teachers alike.

The author keeps you glued to the book to see what will happen to Melba the next day she goes to school. It amazes me that Melba can keep going to school when she is treated so badly. I would have quit after the first day. Melba's faith in g-d, her grandma India, her mother Louis, and a few blacks and whites helped her survive her struggle to get an education. Melba didn't go through integration for her self, she was a brave warrior so that in the future her people could get a good education, and lead a good life in this "free" country. This is a good book for anyone to read, no matter their age.

Angels are entertaining though...
Angels Don't Know Karate by Debbie Dadey and Maria Thornton Jones
This story takes place in the school yard with friendly Eddie, Howie, Liza and Melody.
Eddie doesn't believe in angels. Eddie is double dared to climb a tree. He tries, but Eddid fell out of the tree, and is caught by a stranger. His friends try to convincehim that she was his guardian angel. The stranger hands them tickets to a karate demo to watch the stranger. The next day Melody believed the strangers angel Miss Michael was a guardian angel. The four friends spied on Miss Michaels for proof that she is an angel. They found no proof and she left the school. Melody still believed she was an angel but Eddie didn't because angels don't do karate.
I really liked the book because it was about an angel. I think that everyone that believes in angels like I do would really like the story. If you don't believe in angels you might change your mind after you read this book.

my favorite book
The book was a really good book. I'm happy there are a lot of different kinds of books by the same author. I have'nt got a chance to read them all.But from all the books I've read so far. I think other kids would like to read it, or read allof the books by Debbie Thorton I love her books. The characters are really curious there always trying to solve mysteries.

Flying Foot Mania
I really liked this book because it was so athletic. My favorite part was when Eddy fell off of the tree and Angela grabbed his ankle before he hit the ground. They got free passes for karate lessons after Eddy fell. It is very rare to fall and not be caught. This is the#1 best book.
If I were any of you kids out there I would really, really, really, ... want to read this extremely good book. This book was so good that when I was reading the last chapter, I couldn't sleep until I finished. Read this book. You won't regret it. Everybody loves these Bailey School Kids books! THEY ROCK!

Great !!
I almost red the whole bailey kids series. All the books are cool !! I like this one just as I like the other 30(About, not exacly). They were all cool. I dont want to tell you what it is about but you should read it. If you like it I suggest you read the other 40 books.

PS YOU MUST JUST MUST BUY IT !!!!!

Strange tales from Bailey Elementary!
Strange occurences are becoming pretty, well... NORMAL at Bailey Elementary School. This time a huge dust storm blows into town, and suddenly appearing at the school is a squat, greenish-haired woman who's come to be the new nurse.

For someone who has gone to nursing school, though, she certainly doesn't seem to know much about health: first off, she seems to have forgotten that kids need to drink water!! Secondly, she has a very strange eye chart with symbols that don't resemble English letters at ALL!! Besides, what do all those weird words she says all the time really mean? You don't suppose she could be a MARTIAN, do you??

This book marks the 18th in the popular Bailey School Kids series. Each book introduces some strange sort of person who could (or maybe, could NOT) be a supernatural creature. It's a fast paced series with the gang typically throwing insults at each other, "we'd better go in before Liza sneezes her head off". Many books in the series are creepy, some are fun and silly. "Martians Don't..." lies somewhere in between. The characters are silly, but if there really IS a martian coming down to earth to invade the planet, wouldn't you be a bit wigged out??

A good choice for an intermediate reader, these books are well illustrated and the text is large and easy to read. An advanced reader (like an adult) can get through one in about 45 minutes or less, making them good choices for storytimes. Many of the books can be applied to different holidays or seasons ("Santa Claus Doesn't Mop Floors" or "Cupid Doesn't Flip Hamburgers", for instance).

It's a fun series even for older students and children (I've read about 30 of them, most of which I've not even used in class!!) and definitely worth checking out.

Martians Don't Take Temperature
I have picked out this book because I think this book is the best book I have read this quater. The book is called Martians Don't Take Temperature. It is about four friends named Liza,Melody Howie and Eddie. Howie thinks that the new school nurse is a martian, but liza didn't believe in him. They have been noticing the school nurse use different words to take tempreatures. I choose this book as my favorite book because it reminds me of me and my four friends. We used to hang out together.I would like to recommend this book to the people who like to have fun.

WereWolves Don't Go To Summer Camp
I give this book five stars because it's the book that I actually wanted to keep reading. It was very interesting and it seemed to pull you into it.If you read it you would just want to read the next part. It's one of the best books I've read. Now I am reading the whole series.

Werewolves Don't Go to Summer Camp
The book that I have read is Werewolves Don't Go to Summer Camp . I have chosen this book because it is very mysterious and funny . The book is about four children, who are going to a different summer camp. I won't give the whole story away, but the only thing I can say is that I recommend it to kids in the 7th grade and higher.

I'm glad werewolves go to my school!
Werewolves Don't Go To Sumer Camp is a great book that takes us on an adventure to summer camp. Howie, Eddie, Melody, and Lize run into some wolf problems as they arrive at camp Lone Wolf. On the first day of camp they met Mr. Jenkin, the camp director. The kids think he is a werewolf because he's hairy and he likes raw hamburgers. They make it through the long week and find out the scary truth.
I recommend this book because I like funny and scary books. I like picturing scary things.

great book report
This is about 4 kids who thinks they saw a unicorn. There was unicorn magic happening in Baily City. Mr. Wither's a stable owner donated his business to Baily City. Thanks to the 4 kids they helped keep the stable and other animals safe and clean. A dog and cat appeared by magic in the barn. This is the place where the unicorn maybe lived. The 4 kids tried to do funny things to see if the unicorn really is a horse or is a real unicorn. Do you think so?

I made a barn out of a shoebox and made my story inside the box. I made a scene of all the things that happened in this book. I turned this project into our teacher Mrs. South at school. 3rd grade

A Happy Holiday Story
I think this book is a good holiday book. It really gets you in the mood for the holiday you're waiting for, especially Christmas. It's about the four kids in this series. Melody, Howie and Eddie doubt this, but Liza thinks that there is something special at Bailey Stables, a unicorn. Eddie wants to prove her wrong so he cooks up a plan to show her she's wrong. Find out if Eddie's plan is successful, or if there really is something magical at the stables. It's guaranteed that you'll like this book.

The book was about 4 kids who saw a unicorn
This was a really good book because it had a littel bite of mystery.I also liked it because itwas really fun.it was funny to.

The Hilarious Book
I think ''Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots'' was a pretty good book. I liked it when the kids almost got caught by their teacher. It was pretty hilarious. The kids really did think their teacher was actually a real live vampire. I think ''Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots'' is a child's book. One thing I don't like about ''Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots'' is that no one disappears to make it a little bit scarier. That is what I think about ''Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots."

A Great Book
Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots
By
Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thorton Jones

The third grade at Bailey Elementary is the hardest class to control, especially Eddie, who is the class trouble- maker. Most of the teachers who had this class left Bailey Elementary because of all of Eddie's pranks. The new teacher, Mrs. Jeepers is different, though. She won't quit no matter what Eddie does. Each day Mrs. Jeepers wears a brooch that kept getting greener and greener as Eddie does something bad. Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots is about how Mrs. Jeepers takes control of the third grade, but the kids begin to wonder about her.
I think the authors wrote this book to make people laugh. Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots is a very funny, entertaining book. I read the book and laughed.
I really liked this book because of the interesting way it was written. There are all kinds of clues and mysterious events that make you want to figure out the solution. I thought it was clever how the authors used details and events to make the teacher look like a vampire. In a way the classroom and kids seemed like they could be real, but the authors also included parts that were fun and imaginary.
I would recommend this book because you can have fun reading it. I think first to third grade kids would enjoy this book.

Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots-T.C.
