Can't go wrong...
with this purchase. This little book can really help those on the journey to publication. I enjoyed the practical approach and also the humorous anecdotes. I've highlighted the 10-point attack plan for my own book promotion.

Fun and practical!
Excellent source of information and humorous insights that independently published authors will find valuable.

Brilliant off-the-wall creative puzzles
Rubin is a brilliant guy whose puzzles have given me many happy hours. He can pull an absorbing puzzle from anywhere. You might have to figure out the Universal Product Code barcodes; or you might have to interpret barely-readable signatures of famous people, or country maps out of context, or photographic negatives. You might have to read some Esperanto, or get your car out of a crowded parking lot. I've read a lot of puzzle books, and this stuff is very original. For those who appreciate a devious, creative mind.

THE Classic of World Literature
The best edition of this great work that I have yet to see. The notes are outstanding, the background material useful, and the commentary erudite. A must edition for the serious study of Cervantes.

Coyote Pete against Blackheart Eddie!!
When Liza, Melody, Howie, and Eddie went with the rest of their class to an old abandoned ghost town now made into a recreation they never had any idea of their further adventures with strange adults. However it seems that this one pale looking cowboy is definitely up to no good. It turns out his name is Coyote Pete...and wait till you hear the legend...it turns out Coyote Pete had caught the gold fever, but he was one unlucky guy and couldn't find any gold. When one of his best friends did, Coyote Pete couldn't resist the temptation to steal the gold from his friend. However his plan was uncovered by Blackheart Eddie, a red haired boy who always like to play tricks on everybody. Sounds familiar? A lot like our own Eddie? Well it turns out Blackheart Eddie spooked the horses and just when Coyote Pete was about to get the gold he was trampled by a stampede of horses. It turns out that the ghost of Coyote Pete has been lurking throught the mountains in search of Blackheart Eddie since... It doesn't look good for our Eddie friend cause Coyote Pete doesn't seem very friendly to him. Can Liza, Melody, and Howie save Eddie from his bad fate?

This is a great breakthrough for young children who are just starting to read chapter books. This were my first chapter books and I have mostly always enjoyed them through my years. Now I am much older and I find these books still very entertaining at times. A great books for young kids just reading chapter books and it has great pictures too!

An insightful look into the mind of a Japanese soldier
An insightful look into the mind of a Japanese soldier. Oba and 300 others eluded capture for over a year on the small island of Saipan occupied by the Americans. The book touches on the many levels and degrees of victory. Both, on a personal, human level and on a militaristic level.

A vanished era
I am saddened to hear that this book is out of print. I came across it entirely by accident in a university library, but it was a thumping good read, and I am glad I was so fortunate.

This is the tale of a Japanese Army officer stationed on the isle of Saipan in WWII. He hid from and fought the American occupation until the end of the war, a feat unrivaled in all the Pacific theater. What is most amazing, is Captain Oba had the courage to live and fight on, when the rest of the island's defenders had engaged in a traditional, and arguably foolish, mass suicide attack.

This stunning portrait is written by an American serviceman who actually came under attack by Captain Oba during his tour of duty. The respect evident for this great warrior is not something often found, and makes for a book worth reading. In America and Japan, few think to honor those who fought for the losing side. This book serves their memory.

Ahoy, mates!! All aboard for fun times!
If vampires don't wear polka-dots, and genies don't ride bicycles, then a pirate certainly wouldn't be caught wearing pink sunglasses, would he??

Welcome to book #9 in the Bailey School Kid's series (which I affectionately call the "...Don't..." series for it's wonderful titles of mythical/magical creatures who don't do something or other). This time the kids are off (again!) to camp Lone Wolf (originally visited in book #2, Werewolves Don't Go to Summer Camp). Every year they take place in a rowing competition, and every year they are trounced. That is, maybe until THIS year when Captain Read shows up!

And what a character the Captain is! He sports a striped shirt and dewrag like a real pirate, and even has an obnoxious parrot that spouts bits of wisdom and seems to be spying on the gang. Read seems to know a great deal about an ancient buried treasure that a mad female pirate had buried around Bailey City somewhere. Some kids even begin to think he IS a pirate. But, if he WAS, he wouldn't be wearing those giant pink sunglasses, would he...?? WOULD he...??

I've reviewed the other books leading up to this one, and again I must say that the "...Don't..." series is a fine choice for beginning/intermediate readers. The pace of the text is quick, easy to read (I can polish off one of these books in about 20 minutes) and fun. While not spooky like some others in this series, "Pirates Don't..." is a lot of fun. One can just hear Captain Read growling in a guttural Irish/sea shanty sort of voice as he calls out "ahoy!" and all that piratical stuff (this would make a good selection for reading aloud simply for the chance to make fun voices).

As per usual in the series, Eddie doesn't believe Captain Read is a pirate or is in search of buried treasure, and children could easily copy him and make a game out of arguing if or if not the Captain really IS a pirate. This is a good deal of the series' appeal, I think: the small group of students who seem to be the only ones who notice anything weird going on and their investigations into whether or not these strange folk are what they might be (a vampire, werewolf, ghost, pirate, etc...).

Although the series is in numerical order (as of this writing, it goes up to at least 40), and though some characters make reappearances, it isn't necessary to begin reading at any given point to enjoy the series. Grab one or two (including "Pirates Don't...") and see if YOU too, aren't hooked!!

Hysterical, real life comments from kids' experiences!
This book not only made me break out in loud fits of laughter, but it reminded me of all the complaints I have had or still have about my own parents. This is a great gift for kids who are frustrated by their parents and for parents who can't seem to understand what is ticking their own kids off so much! Highly recommended.

Another great Bailey School Kids book
My 8 year old loved this book. He didn't even pick up his game boy until he had read the whole thing! The silly titles in this series lure him in, and the storylines hook him.
