Martin's best
Despite the weight of the material within, this book is most difficult to put down. Martin offers an insight into the mystery of Holy Saturday that could well be one of the most profound meditations I've come accross. Martin handles art and theology as they should be handled, as two visions of the same truth. It is an excellent book for spiritual reading during Lent. Dr. Martin is a fine scholar. I highly recommend it to all.
Exquisite attempt to probe the most ineffable mysteries!
Martin succeeds in his brave effort to explore the depths of the kenosis to which Christ dove in order to complete the Redemptive act. Dr. Martin's extensive documentation and the wise manner in which he stands on the shoulders of great theologians, poets and other literary masters provides for an uncommonly moving and profound piece of scholarship.

A beautiful book about a beautiful trip...
Is there anyone who has traveled in Thibet in our days and
reached that famous place in Amdo and has seen the tree

Two travellers on an epic journey in an antique land
I got this book because I was researching central Asia, and then didn't read it for a couple of years. When I finally did, I couldn't put it down. This is a true account by two French priests who travelled by camel and horse, first to Mongolia and then to Tibet in the 1840s. What they saw and did is fabulously interesting, but the joy of this book is that it's wonderfully written. Huc, who actually wrote it, is a kind of 19th Century Paul Theroux, but without the sour attitude. This book is a great read

A great general reference to the attack on Pearl Harbor
Larry Kimmett and Margaret Regis book "The Attack on Pearl Harbor" is an excellent source of information and photos about the Japanese attack on the United States Pacific Fleet on Dec 7, 1941. This book is full of specific details about almost all of the people, equipment, and major leaders who were involved in this battle. It is easy to follow and is well written. While not a lengthy read (about 120 pages), it is packed full of relevant and specific stories from topics a varied as the Japanese special attack force, through the destruction of the Battleship Row, to the present day memorials to the USS Arizona and USS Utah. It is easy to recommend this book to anyone interested in what was one of the darkest days in American history.

Absolutely delightful
The Colorado Plateau country of southern Utah, western Colorado, and northern Arizona is justifiably famous for its magnificent scenery, but the stunning wildflowers are less widely appreciated. Fagan's "Canyon Country Wildflowers" is the best guide to these treasures that I've yet seen. The photographs are absolutely top-notch (sometimes I browse the guide, just daydreaming...), often showing the entire plant in its natural habitat. Likewise, the collection is relatively complete. Flowers are organized by colors and typically easy to find. To top it off, the book is relatively compact and durable in the field. Nowadays, I don't head south without it. -William Adair, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Utah State University

Compelling, captivating, illustrative.
Since Haiti gained its independence from the French in 1804, volatile governments stifled the country's growth. Although it was the Western Hemisphere's second democracy, the impoverished country remained islolated for many years. However, Marc Yves Regis I has written a personal and provacative story of Haiti's disenchanted poor. Regis, a Hartford Courant photographer, opens the door to Haiti's dark, brutal secrets with explicit photographs taken in his native country. During the last decade, Regis traveled back-and-forth to Haiti, an impoverished country pushed further into dispair in the early 1990s by an international embargo that was supposed to punish an illegal military government. Instead, peasant children starved because food prices rose during the U.S.-led embargo. In addition, armed paramilitary thugs controlled the poor with iron fists. Gunfire rang out each night and dead bodies lined the roads each morning. In the book, Regis uses his mother's voice to tell a poignant story of how the Haitian military and its hired thugs tortured and killed innocent people. The book outlines Haiti's democractic reforms, beginning with the 1990 appointment of the country's first woman president. A year later, Ertha Pascal-Trouillot handed power to Jean-Bertrand Aristide who captured the presidency with an overwhelming 67 percent of the vote in the country's first true, democratic election. The military, however, overthrew the fiery former priest in a bloody coup d'etat. Aristide lived in exile in a plush Washington, D.C. suburb for mare than three years until the United States, in a military show of force, restored him to power.

The set of books to read about the Saint
This first volume of a projected 3 volume edition of documents pertaining to the life and order of Saint Francis will easily become the source for all followers of Christ through the inspiration of this timeless saint. It provides the best translations and most recent scholarship on the life and times of the saint. In many way St. Francis is the most universal and beloved of Chirstian saints. Often called to second Christ as his life exemplifies the ideals of Christian service. Highly recommended.
