Three angels, or daimons, or maybe neutrinos
Three angels, or "daimons," or maybe neutrinos--who may also
have been the Three Wise Men--"drop" into several of these stories via their steam balloon, the Jules Verne. They bring messages from the "Consiliarii," but who are they? A council of heavenly spirits? The Force? A code name for God? And what might their message be? Could it be as simple as "All you need is love"? Maybe. Davenport ranges from ancient Greece to a somewhat contemporary Denmark; from Christian theology and ancient philosophy to pubescent phallocentrism and drug overdose. "The Jules Verne Steam Balloon" is perplexing and enlightening, humorous and melancholy, and vibrant with life and the joy of living it. These stories move as only Davenport's fiction does, as full of "fact" as of "fiction," as full of life in the body and in the world as of philosophical discourse and natural science. And--oh,yes! be warned--accompanied by much doffing of undergarments.

Superb Study of a Little-Known Subject
This is a superb study of the social and political world of Hungary in the 18th century. By focussing on the Esterhazy's, one of Hungary's most prominent families, the author is able to touch on almost every aspect of social, economic, religious, and political life in middle Europe during the 18th century. From this masterful study, it is easier to understand the social and political unrest that erupted in the major uprisings of 1848 and later resulted in immigration to North America by Austro-Hungarian subjects. I wish that the book had been longer and that the author had been able to expand on each of the chapters.

An attractive supplement
Although the subtitle of the collection is "Challenging Problems for Students," a fair number of the problems are not difficult or tricky, but do a wonderful job of testing a student's understanding of the major concepts and techniques of elementary linear algebra. Not all of the problems are original, but they are all instructive and interesting. One of my favorites gives a product AB of a 3 x 2 and 2 x 3 matrix and asks for the product BA. The hints and solutions are clear and concise. I particularly appreciated the attractive layout of this text. Notation is chosen carefully, and everything from font size to spacing of text and the dislplay of complex expressions seems to have been considered with utmost concern and respect for the reader. This book is a very good resource for both students and teachers of linear algebra.

Author's comments: what LOFT LIVING tells us about cities
When I wrote this book about the transformation of lower Manhattan a number of years ago, SoHo was already recognized as an artists' and a landmark loft district. Because of the many modern art galleries and the neighborhood's general ambiance of being "discovered," it also became a tourist destination. I wanted to explain the process of discovery--how derelict loft spaces attracted artists in the 1960s and 1970s, and through them, provided a cultural core for the commercial redevelopment of the central city. Did I predict that the art galleries would flee to another neighborhood, and be replaced by clothing stores and shoe boutiques? That rents would rise and struggling artists would be replaced by rock stars and rich people? LOFT LIVING lays the groundwork for these developments, exposing the connections between chic urban lifestyle, media hype, and real estate developers. This book was fun to write and, I think, prescient.

An excellent book
I bought a used copy of the 1983 publication of this book recently. It is excellent. Very good explanations of spur, worm, and helical gears with lots of diagrams and pictures that clearly illustrate the concepts presented. Chapters on mechanical clutches, bearings, sliding bearings, chain drives, springs, fasteners, belt drives, axles, shafts ect. The info presented is practicle and understandable. Good combination of mathmatical formulas and mechanical theory without being academic. Much of the info on gear design and theory is hard to find. Also info on stress and strain, designing for rigidity and strength. The chapters on gears alone easily justify the cost of the book. I wish more technical books were written like this one.

Amazing collection of primary source material
This is an outstanding collection of primary source documents on maroons societies(groups of escaped slaves) throughout the Americas. Reads almost like a piece of fiction. Its a book that should be read cover to cover, not just used as a reference. Valuable book for anyone interested in resistance to slavery. Includes fine introduction. The societies covered in this book range from small bands to large powerful states that survived for generations.
Nonlinear Preference and Utility Theory (Johns Hopkins Series in Mathematical Sciences, Vol 5)
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (1988)
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:
a recommended book
This book covers the area of non-expected utility theory. One of the most prominent researchers writes this book very carefully. So you can get enough knowledge to master choice theory. The history of utility theory is very long, so this book will be a good help for economists, not only for graduate students.
