A Pretty Good Book
This book has some really good ideas for special holiday touches throughout the home. It includes autumn decorating as well as Christmas. I used several of her ideas in my own home.

Simply Beautiful
I do not watch QVC and was not familiar with Valerie Parr Hill prior to buying the book. But, I bought it because I was so captivated by the great cover. The photos are beautiful and the ideas inspiring, yet simple. Do not let the Christmas tree on the cover fool you. The book takes you from Thanksgiving through the holiday season. A great little find to add to my book collection.

A pretty good kids' collection
_Creepy_Classics_ consists of seven short stories, two poems (by Robert Service and Edgar Allan Poe), an excerpt from _Frankenstein_, and an excerpt from Shakespeare's Scottish tragedy - a formidable selection. Some of the works - 'The Monkey's Paw', 'The Dead Girl' (which I have seen elsewhere under the title 'Was it a Dream?'), 'Lost Hearts', 'Dracula's Guest' (which I believe, though I am not certain, is abridged), and 'The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar' are fairly frequently anthologised, though this is not a problem in a collection for children, who will be encountering most of the works for the first time.

I read this book a couple of times when I was eleven or twelve, and again quite recently, and was impressed with the many features peculiarly helpful to the young reader. The text size is a little larger than usually found in adult or young adult books, but not large enough to be embarrassing; the glossary is nearly comprehensive; the general introduction ('Dear Reader') and the brief biographical sketches are both of high quality. However, the most appealing part of the book (apart, of course, from the stories themselves!) is certainly the pencil drawings by Dominick R. Domingo. There is one for each work; though serious and comic, realistic and grotesque, by turns, they are uniformly good, and contribute greatly to the effect of the individual stories.

Diving
I thought this book was superb and well written. The expository thinking that was included in it really hit home. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in this subject. I haven't been able to put the practices advised in it in use, but will soon.

A Great Book
One cannot fully study Elizabeth I without encountering the issues of ceremony and progress. Cole does a wonderful job of exploring the issues and reasons behind Elizabeth's progresses, and why they were crucial to her reign. I highly recomend the book for all interested in the subject, and for any history student.

Thin-Layer Chromatography for Binding Media Analysis (Scientific Tools for Conservation)
Published in Paperback by Getty Conservation Inst (1997)
Authors: Mary F. Striegel and Jo Hill

Thin layer Chromatography
Very good over all. The book contains lots of easy to use information on what equipment you will need to do TLC, why you should chose TLC over the other chromatography techniques out there, very nice sections breaking down exactly how to do tests for proteins, carbohydrates and other binders in paint as well as step by step processes. My only complaint is that this is a book primarly aimed at art conservation professionals and I am having a hard time transfering some of the techniques to architectural conservation (so far it looks like it is easier just to do uv light and other convential analysis).

Very well organized
This book is a good reference in many points of the usability process - evaluation, design, and testing. The authors organize chapters in a very structured way that the content is very digestible. At 448 pages, the book isn't meant to be read in a single session, but again, it's a great reference.

My favorite part about this book is the fact that it actually has a section on user documentation - something that is lacking in many books on the subject of usability, and the achilles heel of many projects.

Lucy Breckinridge of Grove Hill: The Journal of a Virginia Girl 1862-1864 (Women's Diaries and Letters of the Nineteenth-Century South)

Diary of Lucy Breckinridge
The diary is an excellent way to look into the eyes of a young woman during the Civil War years. She sounds like a typical teenager today, writing about boys, socializing, familys issues, lonliness, happiness, body image, sexuality, and just life in general; however, it also contains information related to the time, such as her views on slavery and the war. Unfortunately, what is missing from this book is an historical examination into the people, places, and events she wrote about.

Personal story from Civil War
For those of you like me who are not general history buffs but enjoy personal stories from bygone eras, this is a wonderful book. Reading along with Lucy, sharing her joys and pain during the days of the Civil War, she becomes a friend, and we her confidante. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the Civil War, particularly women's views. In reading her story, we can relive a piece of America's past through the eyes of a young woman.

Chic, Charming, Charismatic
Nell Hill's Style at Home is just as chic, charming, and charismatic as Mary Carol Garrity. Those who have visited her two shops will not be disappointed in this book. It is chock full of beautiful photographs and practical decorating tips which epitomize Nell Hill's and G. Diebolts. I especially enjoyed visiting Mary Carol's home, via her photos. Her decorating style is similar to Charlotte Moss, with lots of charm, color, layering, sophistication, and personality. Wonderful book!!!

A beautiful book with great how-to's
Nell Hill's in Atchison, Kansas is a great store.

But Mary Carol Garrity's book goes a step further and - with beautiful photographs and descriptive text - tells you exactly how you can take the things you already own and love and create a fabulous style.

This is pretty enough for a coffee table book and practical enough to pull out and use. There are no unattainable "Martha Stewart"-like crafts or projects.

Nell Hill's Style at Home is a great self-purchase or gift.

Do these bad reviewers have a vendetta?
Style is personal, I understand that. I recently purchased a copy of Style at Home while visiting Atchison, KS. I was not expecting a store like Nell Hill's in a town of 10,000. It is true that the book does not give the full picture, but it does give some interesting ways to look at the way a home and its furnishings are setup. The book urges the reader to use things in new and interesting ways while not throwing out the history and the style of the things you have. It does not surprise me that some designers may not like this book, it puts some great tools in the hands of the people who would probably be paying them. If you ever get a chance, beat a path to Nell Hill's and check out the hospitality that is evident in the pictures that are displayed in this lovely book. And by the way, I am not old, I am 25! Mary Carol, keep up the good work!
