Action, adventure, heroism ... and true
Eighty years before the ill-fated Soviet submarine Kursk sank, killed its entire crew, and inspired a major movie, another sub full of American sailors faced certain death on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. But the resourceful crew of the U.S. Navy's S-Five didn't suffer the same fate as the Kursk's crew. And their story is recounted in vivid detail in "Under Pressure."

"No matter how dire and hopeless things may seem," Hill says, "life is worth fighting for."

His book is a remarkable story of true heroism in a time of heroes.

A.J. Hill puts you in the sunken sub with the crew
This incredible story, which I'd never heard about before, took place in 1920 in a fairly primitive submarine (by today's standards). However, I believe it remains the only instance where the entire crew of a sunken sub was rescued. Lt. Commander Savvy Cook is as cool and calm and as great a leader of men in dire straits... Since they all survived, wrote letters, articles, and left a good first person record through official Navy records, Hill is able to place the reader on board the S-5 alongside with Savvy Cooke and his men. It is as gripping as any story of survival and rescue--think of how we all reacted to the recent rescue of the 9 trapped coal miners in PA. As exciting as any submarine or naval story ever written,... I can't recommend this book enough--this book is a gem. There's even an unbelievable photo of the stern of the S-5 sticking out of the water.

A Real-Life Thriller!
The story of the S-5 is one I've been familiar with my whole life, the executive officer LT Grisham (whose nickname was "Jim" not "Charlie") was my grandfather. He and his wife Mary were not getting ready to start a family, my mother was four years old at the time. I don't want to give away the ending, so I think I needed to make clear that my existence was not predicated on LT Grisham's survival.
The book is a real page-turner, I read it in one sitting. Although I was well aware of the outcome, Mr. Hill kept me enthralled. My heart was beating fast and my hands were sweaty. It is an inspiring book, uplifting to read about the honor and valor of men in terrifying predicaments.
It's also a graphic description of the conditions aboard submarines in the early days of the silent service.
A MUST-READ

not great bukowski but ok
not great bukowski but ok
not the one to read for his most potent impact--better to read this one after you're really into him and can tolerate the stuff that [stinks]

Good Stuff
Typical Buk poetry, which for most is superior stuff. Not as good in my opinion as Play the Piano... but an excellent collection. If you're just starting out on Bukowski and like his writing, he also writes some cool fiction.

a winner!
I agree with the other reviewer. Contains some of Bukowski's best. Worth buying and keeping for additional readings.

Contemporary Management
This book was an excellent book on the principles of management. The student CD was a great help in reviewing each chapter prior to class. The quizzes also helped in understanding the objectives. Would reccommend this book to anyone taking a business course.

worth buying
i bought this book while waiting train. i have red some books on same subject. this book covers subject more in depth. but what was missing: author describes an utility ,that can be used to check poor passwords, but does not tell where it can be founded, i think he should include that b/c he describes how to use it in efficient way. but in conclusion: worth buying, tells things that other won't, but all things are not so deep. buy it anyway!!!

Best in its catagory!!
This book is THE BEST reference to NT workstation security. It is comprehensive, and tells one of many of the NT security holes, and how to plug them. the only downside is that the passcrack security test tool was not included (apparently the author thought it would ship on disk) and no reference was made as to where to get it.

maybe good but definitely NOT the unabridged recording
once again, (OK it does not happen that often, otherwise we would stop trusting Amazon and shopping with them, would'nt we?) the description is not accurate : this version ISBN 1569945233, monterey media etc.... is an ADAPTATION of Dicken's novel by the St Charles PLayers, who record it with all due talent and spirit BUT as a play, in an "exciting Radio Theater style" quote, unquote.....

The Charles Dickens Classic of all time.
This is Charles Dickens' best christmas story. Only David Copperfield tops this story. Mr. Dickens teaches the reader that no matter how much money or position we have, no matter how important we feel, no matter how much cynicism we have, life will come right out in front of us with a big wham!! Tiny Tim is compassion, Mr. Cratchit is hope, Fizziwigg is happiness. And all these things are life at its best. A Christmas Carol is the true feeling and hope and love. Make this short story your hope.

As It Was Written
The following review is for the version illustrated by William Geldart, not this version illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger. For some reason, Amazon mixed the two up.

This is it! These are the letters, words, sentences, paragraphs that made Christmas the celebration that it is today - the family parties, the feasts, the excitement, giving to the poor. Virtually every way we celebrate this magnificent Holiday (except the mall part!) comes from this book written by Charles Dickens.
First off, this is the unabridged version. Nothing added - nothing taken away. That's as it should be. (Unfortunately, as great as they may be, the movie versions truly do not do the book justice - although I must say the George C. Scott and Alistair Sim versions do come fairly close).
One thing that surprises me about this book is how few people I know that have have actually read it, but they've seen one version or another of the movie countless times! They don't seem to realize that when books are put to film, so much is taken out for length or for other reasons. A Christmas Carol is no different. In fact, if you watch all of the different movie versions available, you STILL would not get the complete book, even though each movie adds one thing or another from the original story that the others may not.
There are countless copies of this story available in various book form, but this particular version is probably one of the best that I have seen. The illustrations attempt in some part to keep in the same spirit as in Dickens' original. But the best, most interesting part of this version (besides the story itself) is all of the little facts, explanations, and trivia put into the margins throughout this book. They give the modern 21st century reader more of an understanding of what 19th century English life was like. A couple of examples: when Dickens writes of the Cratchit family taking their goose to the bakers to be cooked, I wondered why would any one take their food OUT to be cooked and then picked up later. This book explains that few poor people in this time period had ovens large enough to roast a good family sized bird. They were big enough to cook a small bit of meat and that was about it. In order to have one of those rare Holiday meals, they had to take it to the large baker's oven at an appointed time for cooking.
Another fact I did not know was that in the story, Scrooge's sister, Fan, was based on Dickens' actual sister in law, Mary Hogarth.
There are also a multitude of paintings, drawings, and sketches from Dickens' time showing his time. Now you can see, as accurately as one can considering there were no cameras, life of the rich, middle class, and poor as it actually was. There's a picture of Queen Victoria and her family celebrating Christmas. There is also a beautiful painting of a poor labourer's family Christmas celebration. There are sketches from the first edition of 'A Christmas Carol.'
If you plan on owning a copy of this most wonderful of all Christmas novels, this is the version to get.

WARNING
This is a third edition Book. Most classes that are now in session are looking for the fourth edition - I found this out the hard way. So watch out.

Excellent in-depth introduction
I found this book to be a well organized and stimulating. I have taken a course in Int Business as part of my undergraduate business degree. I discovered this book offered as part of an Int Business degree program at another institution and decided to purchase it. I found it to be so much better than the first go around that It was like I never learned Int business to begin with. Well written; I am very skeptical of typos and could only find one which was very minor. This book is a real eye opener and you will never want to stop reading it. It is one of my favorite text books! Thanks Charles Hill.

Most useful handbook
As a prescribed book for our MBA course (University of South Africa) I found this publication most enlightening. It is current and up to date, and addresses diverse topics which exert influences on business. Themes include national and cultural differences, global trade, politics and investment, the global monetary system, foreign exchange and capital market, strategic issues, and business operations.

I could find nothing wrong with the writer's style. References are copious and the text is fairly easy to understand. Although it could be argued that postgraduate students will grasp the contents easier, even an undergraduate friend of mine found the book fascinating and well written.

Whether for formal studies or personal interest I can highly recommend this volume.

It Sucks!
I'm using this book as a college textbook. I find the content insufficient to cover the subject matter. There are not enough solved sample problems to illustrate the concepts.

A good book, but it lacks something
I'm studying electronics engineering, and this one is one of the books recommended by my teachers, since it covers a great amount of the subjects; at first glance it seems really complicated, but you only have to get used to the author's style. The only drawback I've found is that there aren't enough solved examples, and you should know that if you wanna learn, there's no better way than doing problems and having a reference to check them. If you're looking for a book full of interesting problems, try Neamen's "Electronic circuits analysis" or if you want a book really easy to understand(although the content is very basic in some subjects) get Boylestad's.

Great Book!
This book has everything that an engineer needs to understand complex analog and digital circuitry. The book covers how flip flops and A/D D/A circuitry is implemented. At first the book was difficult but as the level of the reader is increase the material makes more sense. The author assumes that the reader has a level of proficiency with Fourier Analysis and Thevenin and Norton Equiv. circuits. As a practicing engineer now, I constantly refer to it as reference material. Everything I need technically (for circuits) is contained in the book except for microwave stuff. Great book! Hats off to the author

A persuasive sell, packed, practical and fast paced.
Just like all the other portable MBA books. This book is packed with pretty useful ideas. It is very focused and so you 'll need to be as well when you read it.

Why did I go to B-school?
This book boils all of the marketing concepts I learned while in B-school(and some I didn't) into an easy read format. The only thing missing is that annoying quant-jock who sat behind my chewing gum the entire semester! If you just want a great introduction to marketing, or are an MBA looking to refresh your understanding of the 4P's, pick-up this book. You won't be disappointed.

Revisiting a memorable story
After I read this book the first time, I donated it to a local nature center library. But a part of it stayed with me, and I found myself thinking about it and occasionally sharing it with others. So when I saw another copy of this volume in a used bookstore, I scooped it up for myself. I stood there and thumbed through the pages until I found it -- Chapter 10, "Flying Squirrels: Phantoms of the Night," the story of a young flying squirrel named Hepsey. John Terres had the opportunity to keep Hepsey almost like a pet for most of her life. While that kind of arrangement is generally not a good one for human or for wild creature (and would easily have been fodder for a 1960s Disney film), Terres learned quite a bit about squirrels that a more formal study might not have revealed. He wondered about her nut-hiding talent, for example. So he put 100 hickory nuts out on a table and left the house. When he came back, each nut was hidden somewhere -- in a shirt pocket, in a shoe, etc. He put another 100 nuts out that same night, and they disappeared as well. Based on Hepsey's behavior, Terres projected that a typical squirrel could probably store 10,000-12,000 nuts in one winter season. A fascinating tidbit of information like that sticks in your head. But the fun of it all is in his narration of the escapade and of other Hepsey happenings. That chapter is arresting enough to warrant reading aloud during a nature center program.

Terres' ruminations and nature observations are based on his rambles through the North Carolina landscape. "How Vultures Find Their Prey" is another interesting test (by sight or by smell?) that you will remember. But it's Hepsey who will capture your imagination.

interesting wanderings
Terres, who was editor-in-chief at Audubon, spent a decade wandering the Mason Farm Biological Reserve in Chapel Hill, NC. The former farm was donated to the University of North Carolina to allow students to observe the wildlife there. Terres, likewise, set out to chronicle the life he found there, hiding in blinds, perching in tree stands, etc.. & he offers a wonderful account of his observations.

He describes each of the seasons & then gives detailed descriptions of the lives and habits of some of the farms residents: flying squirrels, turkey vultures, wild turkeys, cottontail rabbits, and the like. He came to know some of these creatures individually, including a heroic black turkey and his own pet flying squirrel. He endows them with personality and character and, like him, we start rooting for them in their struggles to survive.

Strategic Management Theory: An Integrated Approach

sometimes confusing for me...
This book is used as our text in my senior level business strategy class. I found the book easy to read. However, understanding for me did not come as easily. Concepts discussed were vague. Although they were well defined, their relationships were not as obvious. The graphs that were provided did not help me to understand some of the ideas. However, the charts were good at putting the ideas and different classifications together.

I found Strategic Management Theory to be helpful
I am a senior business major at Hannibal LaGrange College. Strategic Management Theory is the textbook that we are using in my Business Strategy class. I found the textbook to be very helpful in understanding the terms. I like the way the book repeats important terms throughout the chapters. I also found the closing cases at the end of each chapter to be helpful by providing real business examples to help you understand the concept of the chapters. The only real weakness of the book is the coloring. I think that the yellow used in the charts make some of them hard to read. I found this book to be helpful, and I think its a good senior level book.

Strategic Mangement Theory an Integrated Approach
I am a senior in college and this book is the one that we at using in Business Strategy class. My general reaction is that the book has good content and it is easy to understand. There is some color that helps the reader enhance the content. The chapter overview is at the beginning of each chapter, this helps the reader outline the material. The book is lacking graphs and charts. But it makes up for it in the end of chapter cases. I would rate the illustrations as good, and the content is good as well. This book compares successfully with other college level books. Some of the material is outdated, but the next addition will probably make up for that.
