A fun book that should be in your library...
This book gets one excited about physics. Common physical phenoman like rate, speed, mass and force are explained in very ingenious ways. What is more the writing is good and to the point. Even though there is not much math to speak of the author explains things in a concise manner. What got me hooked to this book is that it does require thinking on part of the reader. One quickly finds out that what may seem intuitive and common sense is in fact precisely the wrong answer. Another major advantage of the book is that you do not have to read it from page one onwards. Turn to any segment and you are sure to be sucked in. Page after page is filled with nice little nuggets of fun. Get this book you will not regret it.

This is the Best
If you ever took a college class in physics, or maybe even high school, or ever wanted to understand physics, this is the book for you. I'm an electrical engineer, and my physics classes were 20 years ago, but I love this book. It really does make you think!! Buy it now (and get one for your friends).

Learn physics without math
This is a jewel of a book. The latest second edition includes additional material on waves, which addresses a lack in the earlier edition. There are sections on optics, momentum, kinetic and potential energy, etc..

My favorite problem, and this is typical of the sort of material presented, is to decide whether or not a car suffers more damage in

A. hitting an immovable brick wall at 50 m.p.h.

B. having a head-on collision with an identical car both travelling at 50 m.p.h. ?

The usual response is to say B. However, Newton's 3rd law of motion, ("forces always act in pairs; if a exerts a force on b, then b exerts an equal and oppositely-directed force on a), maintains that the damage is the same, i.e., the wall strikes the car with the force of a head-on collision. This problem, by the way, is particularly juicy - I remember the head of a university physics department discussing this one at considerable length with two other physicists! (They more or less agreed, with provisos, that B. is indeed correct.)

The author encourages thinking without mathematics, to come to terms with the physical reality of what is occurring. This approach closely mirrors that of Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell, who felt that mathematics was useful only as an adjunct to science and no substitute for clear thinking... A marvellous book.

Amazingly comprehensive! For example, 4 chapters on Access Data Pages; I couldn't find that much on ADP from Microsoft. Whether you prefer to GUI or to code or mix the two, as I do, this huge collection has more esoteria in one place than anywhere else I could find. Don't hesitate to get it.

Even a Novice Can Benefit from This Set!!!
Hello,
I just wanted to send a note to THANK YOU for this priceless set (Access 2002 Developer's Handbook Set)!

I'm a novice, developer-in-training and thought that there would be no way I could possibly benefit from such an advanced publication, but many newsgroups praised it, so I bought it, just in case.
So although I purchased the set close to 5 months ago, I would lug it to and from work and home, but never delving into it. I had a problem last night and posted it to the Access newsgroup hosted by Microsoft. One of the responders made a reference to the set. "Hey, I have those books", I thought.

I started flipping through the pages of the Enterprise edition and stumbled across page 68, "User List and Connection Control". I copied the frmViewUsers form into a database I've created for my company and felt an instantaneous chill surge through me!! Formerly, whenever I had to do maintenance on the mdb, I would have to make an announcement over the PA to ask people to get out of it, hope everyone heard it and hope that no one would try to get in it. No more!!. I can see who's in it, and request they exit via email and even prevent others from opening it. I can't begin to tell you how gratifying it is to purchase a product hoping that it meets your needs and it actually does!!

This encouraging experience has motivated me to take on the challenge to learn more from this set and hopefully improve my skills.
And for that, I thank you.

Damon Johnson

Excellent set of Access programming books
I usually put these books in the trunk of my car if I develop Access software at a customers site. I found Volume I to be more applicable to most problems that surface.

A great knowledge of VBA coding is critical when programming Access. These books provide that knowledge and also give you sample code that you can use on your own projects.

Again, lots of usable examples and sample code.

Looking at the heart of parenting
This is the finest book on parenting I have ever read. A great follow up to his brother Ted's book "Shepherding a Child's Heart". You will be asked to look into your own heart to discover what idols lie in wait to interfere with God directed principled parenting. Then launch on a journey that will aid you in seeking out your teens and assisiting them to know themselves and the God who longs to know them This is a life changing book.

Every Christian parent will be helped immensely by this book
I was asked to read this book by the Youth Minister at my church because I was going to serve on the Youth Ministry team at the church. After reading this book, I wanted it to be translated into my native language: Chinese, so more Chinese Christian parents could be helped by this book. This book can sometimes be wordy, but the overall theme and style of writing are excellent. The author has invaluable knowledge on helping youngsters to turn away from destructive lives and turn toward godly living. The author seems to have succeeded in his own household with his three children. Get this book if you want true Biblical perspective on children rearing.

this book is a sparkling, useful gem amid the clutter
my wife and i have three kids. our oldest for the past two years has been rebellious (to use a mild term). we have been to many professionals, he has been tested and retested, and we have read book after book after book as we have sought to be the best parents we could be to help him (and US!) through this trying time. The book "Age of Opportunity" was recommended to us and we devoured it. We have immediately put into place some of the recommendations of the authors and it has been AMAZING how God has blessed with such WONDERFUL results. Of all the books we have read, this is the very finest. I just picked up five copies and give it as a gift to family who are in need as we are/were. Highly recommended. BEWARE: Not easy reading though as it demands that the parent do self evaluation as well as child reevaluation.

Fantastic Backgammon Book
This book lives up to its reputation as a classic. I've rarely read technical books that are so clearly written and so well illustrated. Magriel provides both before and after illustrations for ideal moves, followed by complete explanations for why some moves are better than others. Section one is identical to his "Beginning Backgammon" book, and the rest of the book is for more advanced play. If you buy the book, make sure you are getting this one (405 pages) not the shorter one.

I've not read Robertie's two volume set for backgammon, but I have read his 501 classic backgammon situations. While this is a great book too, Magriel is the better teacher and writer.

Also, there are plenty of reasonably priced used copies of the hardback version of the book. I bought mine through Amazon used books postings for only $ more than the recent paperback re-release.

The best way to start
This book was once the "bible" for serious backgammon players. Although it has been superceded by Bill Robertie's 2-volume "Advanced Backgammon", it is better for beginners. Outstanding.

Backgammon by Paul Magriel
The definitive backgammon book. Can turn a beginner to an expert. Well written, logically organized, with several examples and clear explanations. It is very complete, covering all aspects of the game. I particularly liked that it recommends to the beginner openings that generally lead to uncomplicated games and later (once the reader has become more experienced) switches to openings that lead to more involved game play. I have read several backgammon books, and this is by far the best. Definitely worth its price.

The Definitive Account
First, I'll admit I'm not an unbiased reviewer. My dad served in Enterprise for three hard years ('42-45), and I've made my own efforts to tell her story.

That said, "The Big E" is without peer, as both a history of the World War II-era carrier Enterprise, and as a record of what carrier warfare in the '40's was like. Stafford's prose is both elegant and -- given the records he had available in 1960 -- accurate. His descriptions are vivid: you can feel the decks whip violently at Santa Cruz, you can see the vibrant green of the Philippines at Leyte Gulf, you can sense the tension in the ready rooms at Midway. Her men are not just names on a page, but tangible characters: bold, fast-thinking, humble, optimistic, but sometimes very worried about their prospects.

There are a couple points about the book which the prospective reader should be aware of. Stafford's focus is primarily on the ship's squadrons, and less so on efforts of her crew. Originally published over 40 years ago, some of the language is a bit dated, though, again, overall the writing is superb.

The fact, however, that a 40-year old book about a ship that was decommissioned in 1947 is deemed fit to reprint in 2002 should tell you two things. The book is not a throwaway, but a genuine work of literature. And Enterprise was not just a warship, but a unique bonding of man and machine, that came through for her country when she was needed most.

2nd copy
I have had this book since it was first published and I can no longer keep the book together, so it is time to replace it. I'm was thriller to see it still in print.
My father was a plank owner of the BIG "E" and loved the ship with a special love that only someone who have faced death and servived can feel. It was a disgrace to have her scrapped and after readin Cdr Stafford's incredible story, I believe that everyone would agree she(and more importantly the men who seved on her) were and are national treasures

The Ship With A Soul
This was the first book I read about World War II and it inspired me regarding the selfless way these men who fought put themselves on the line everyday for 4 years. Cmdr Stafford brought the ship to life. I lost this book over the years and the copy I have now is precious to me. The sacrifice of those on board cannot ever be discounted nor will it ever cease to inspire.

Wow - Naugahide, bakelite and bourbon pack less stink
Superb. This book makes me wanna head to the nearest dive bar, sink a few stiff ones and hop into my time machine -- destination: 1942. The only reason I don't is, well, time travel and booze don't mix. So I make due with By The Balls.

Grabs you so hard, it hurts
For men, this book literally grabs you by the balls from the first page and never lets go (for women, this book figurativly grabs you by the balls, etc.). The character of Ben Drake is the kind of hard drinking, hard talking, hard detecting detective you just don't see anymore but really should. The mystery is pure old school P.I. with a nice dash of modernism mixed in for a concoction that sure packs a wallop. Please, I beg of you, read this book.

TITTILATING AND THOROUGHLY ENGROSSING!
Tom Fassbender and Jim Pascoe (alias Dashiell Loveless), have invented the worlds first time-travel conveyance out of paper and ink, and heavily fueled by Ketel One Vodka! (read this books' "About the Authors" page to decode that statement) Would you like to know more? Grab "By The Balls", their first collaborative publication from UGLY TOWN PRESS. This short, tittilating, and thoroughly engrossing trip to the world of Testacy City will grab you by the you-know-whats, and squeeze until it hurts! The shady denizens of this crime-noir fiction evokes black and white images of Turner and Harlow, Cagney and Bogart, with a nice touch of 90's Pulp Fiction thrown in to sweeten the kitty! The dialogue sings, the imagery lurks, and the whole kit-and-kaboodle works magically to revive a genre not seen since the 1940's. By the time I finished it, I swear my clothes smelled like cigarettes, and my breath like cheap whiskey! Can't wait for more!

The Unfair Advantage

The Unfair Advantage of Intelligence
This is a book I waited to be reprinted for a long time. Mark's honesty about his weaknesses and fears is a sign of his strength and desire to be the best. I admired him for his accomplishments and even more for his drive after reading this book. He helped make Roger Penske the racing legend he is. Will we ever see a man like Mark again? I doubt it!

The Unfair Advantage
It has been 30 years since Mark Donohue won the Indianapolis 500 (1972). My, how time flies! Mark was the at the peak of his career when his life was snuffed out in a race car crash. Mark Donohue and Roger Penske completely revitalized autoracing and changed everybody's thinking about how to run a successful auto racing team. Mark and Roger took auto racing to new levels of professionalism. Gone were the days of t-shirts and oily blue jeans, replaced by clean uniforms. Gone were the days of hamburgers and french fries, replaced with healthy food for the crew. Gone were the days of towing of the race car on an open trailer pulled by a rusty old pickup truck, replaced by semi-trailer trucks. His book "The Unfair Advantage" should be manditory reading for any race car driver or business professional. If you expect to get a head in the game of life, you should read this book.

Read it , its great.
A book of this size usually takes me 1-3 days to read. This one took 2 weeks and I hated having to put it down. Its the story of a man whose only ambition was to be the best in his chosen profession. The book is full of interesting stories about the development of his race cars and driving techniques. A must read for anyone who enjoys motorsport.

96 Great Interview Questions to Ask Before You Hire
Published in Digital by Amacom ()
Authors: Paul Falcone and Adrienne Hickey
Amazon base price: $16.15
Average review score:

Exceptional Insight
This book is a must read for anyone that will be interviewing others, or will ever be looking for a job themselves. It provides insight into the standard set of HR questions, that an interviewer ought to know. "What are your strengths"... "Weaknesses"... Why ask these questions unless you know what you are looking for? This book provides an indepth discussion of these and other questions with sample answers, what you should look for in an answer, and possible follow up questions. It clarifies the interviewing process. From a job hunting perspective it helps to hone your skills, and to prepare you for the HR onslaught of seemingly arcane questions.

Chain this one to your desk!
I had to take my copy home, because at work all the other managers kept "borrowing" it every time they had to interview a job candidate. It is a quick read, easy to find what you're looking for if you just want to glance at a certain section, but full of incredible information.

It tells you all the "why's" behind the standard interview questions like "where do you want to be in 5 years?", and red flags to look for in candidates. Reading it also helped me know what to say when I was being interviewed!

Great Book
This an excellent book for people who want to hire right the first time. It really explains how to interview without insulting you or talking over your head.

A delightful account
This lovely small book was a delight to read. The author made a considered and deliberate decision, at a very young age (while still in college) to lead a simpler life, close to the earth. I really admire his adherence to his principles and his problem -solving skills in a time when we all just call someone else to do things.

I loved reading about the methods he used for farming, building, and general survival with none of what we consider the amenities of life. I found myself feeling very calm as I read this book....a sure sign that the conveniences of modern life bring stress with them!

Intriguing
While a bit on the fringes of what is possible for most folks this little book does provide some very good glimpses of the virtues and rewards of simplicity as a life-style. I plan on returning to it again someday and would recommend it.

Every page was a pleasure
I enjoyed every page and how beauty is found in the small every day life that transpires on the farm. The animal companionship, the rewards of sowing and reaping, the well thought out strategies for self sufficiency. If you're looking to get off the corporate treadmill or break from the collective madness of modern society, here's a book to get you started on your way. The fact that the farm is on 20 acres brings this lifestyle into home range for others aspiring to slow down to nature's pace and experience nature's glory on a daily basis. Two thumbs up for this book - it has even inspired me to plant my first vegetable garden!
