The Pantomime Book: The Only Known Collection of Pantomime Jokes and Sketches in Captivity

Small but seriously nuggetish
Paul Harris's 140 page book is a serious tease. It is exactly what the archivists and enthusiasts want, although, as both, I would have wanted something ten times the size. How could we ever capture the ether of pantomime set pieces? Harris has done a fine job of putting these sketches both into print and into context. Without his work, we would certainly have lost the jokes at which 1,000,000 people per annum laugh. For your information, we are talking about some seriously old jokes here, including one from the 1670s. That's pantomime for you! His modest aim has been to take the unwritten humour of Dan Leno and Jack Tripp and capture it for those of us who have been brought up in and around pantomimes. The result is a series of sketches and comedy routines which look good on paper but, I promise you, look fantastic on stage. If ever you want to find a routine for a piece of slapstick, traditional pantomime or children's theatre, look no further. Paul, howzabout a second edition with lots more? Finally, I'd like to use the WWW to apologise publicly to my commuting companions who must have thought me two sandwiches short of a picnic whilst reading this book on the train each morning. I know, for sure, that it got me to work a happier and jollier person. Oh yes, it did!

Unholy trinity
The anti-Catholic and anti-clerical overtones get in the way of an interesting plot and a delightful tour of Rome and Italian lifestyle. The Vatican's role at the end of WWII could have be covered in a less prejudicial way. It would have also been helpful if the author sited some of the sources he used for his historical references.

Unholy Trinity
The Unholy Trinity is a page turner.

This mystery begins with the murder of a Priest who was independent enough from the Catholic Church to make the church leaders a little uneasy about him. His murder leads to several other murders, the search for unknown identities and the source of vatican gold. A romance between a journalist and a magistrate could have been left out but I guess some people just have to have it:)

Two of my friends also read the book and loved it.

A different view of Rome, The vatican & WW2
Excellent knowledge of The Eternal City, so good you can visit the places named, with a wiew of the Second World War that is not shown in "Band of Brothers" etc.
The book (un)intentionally gives clues to the problems in the 90's Balkans while still engrossing the reader in a superb plot with excellent characterisation.
For those who enjoy action/mystery/historical novels, with a regard for the Vatican as a political organisation with its encumbent machinations, this is an engrossing novel.

A good overview of Scottish cuisine
I just recently caterered my husband's 30th birthday party with a Scottish theme. I found "A Little Scottish Cookbook" to have well laid out traditional recipes that were easy to prepare. However, after buying a few other cookbooks on the subject at the time, it's pretty standard. If you're looking for the standard bill of fare in Scottish recipes this is it.

America's Soccer Heritage: A History of the Game
Published in Paperback by Soccer for Americans (1979)
Authors: Sam Foulds and Paul Harris
Amazon base price: $8.95
Used price: $16.40
Average review score:

A very basic primer on American soccer history
The history of soccer in the United States has been woefully under-documented. Even though it is the second oldest professional sport in the country, it has consistently been neglected by most serious tomes on American sports history.

As the title implies, "America's Soccer Heritage" attempts to rectify this problem. Co-author Sam Foulds--a giant among soccer historians prior to his death in 1994--wrote this book in 1978, hoping to give the many new fans coming in the wake of the North American Soccer League's "Pele years" some understanding of the game's history in the U.S. In some ways he succeeds; the book touches upon all of the major events in U.S. soccer history, from the formation of its first professional league in 1894 to discussion of some of its top native-born players. There are also a number of fascinating photos from the "glory days" of professional soccer in the 1920s.

However, the book seems to be primarily directed at children. In Mr. Foulds' defense, this may have been his intended audience, particularly given the youth soccer boom of the 1970s. However, it makes for disappointing reading for anyone looking for a substantive history of the sport in the United States. Given the huge amount of information available in Mr. Foulds' private collection alone, it is clear that a much more thorough work could have been produced. In short, the Great American Soccer Book is still waiting to be written.

(This book is currently out-of-print. However, it is available through the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, NY).

Boring and confusing
I haven't even finished it yet- but it has been a struggle to get as far as I have. Unless you like keeping track of hundreds of contradictory, speculative and unexciting details, avoid this book.
