A good overview of Scottish cuisine
I just recently caterered my husband's 30th birthday party with a Scottish theme. I found "A Little Scottish Cookbook" to have well laid out traditional recipes that were easy to prepare. However, after buying a few other cookbooks on the subject at the time, it's pretty standard. If you're looking for the standard bill of fare in Scottish recipes this is it.

Useful for Production Engg students, not all topics covered
The book is good. It has the requisite number of solved
problems and most of the topics of material forming such
as Fundamentals, Forging, Drawing, Extrusion, Sheet Metal
Working are covered
with clear cut mathematical derivations, but topics like
Advanced Metal Forming (High Energy Rate Forming, Flow Forming..)
aren`t covered. Latest techniques like Liquid metal Forging,
No Draft forging are missing.
Overall, it is a necessity for all Production Engg students
but not completely exhaustive.

Mediocre book, disappointing
I was looking for a rigorous review to supplement my Operating Systems course and I found that this book certainly fell short of that. I wanted more practice for the kinds of questions we would get on exams, but many of the topics addressed were treated at too simplistic of a level.

I also would have have preferred a range of examples dealing with topics like semaphores and mutual exclusion, deadlock, file systems, but instead all the sample questions were disappointing and I found myself actually wasting time with this book. It would have been more productive to have just stuck with the textbook. Usually Schaum's does a good job, but I think they seriously fell short with their Operating Systems book.

Give me a break...
Despite the fact that I thought the ideas were unusual, I found the reading rather dull and uninteresting. Nothing in the entire work kept me wanting to turn the pages.

Harris seems to lack a distinct style all her own. It seems as though she borrows much from other writers, but not to the point that it's obvious, to her credit. For the most of it, I found this book no more entertainign than a campfire story, only without the frightening surprise ending.

Having spent a great deal of my time growing up in Texas, I did not tend to much identify with any specific aspect of the work, as some critics have praised. It almost seemed mundane. Texas twists on others' styles do not, to me, constitute good works of literature. Perhaps a more colorful use of language could do Harris some good in future writings.

But, to her further credit, her imagination does not seem to be a shortcoming. I expect more outlandish works from this author.

Official Garlic Lovers Handbook

Although helpful, this book is incomplete
I checked out this book to help me on a report on Garlic. I also had two other articles as reference and basically what was in the articles (which is significantly pages shorter than this book) could also be found in this book. The information about Garlic in this book was bascially repeated from the articles I read on Garlic beforehand.

The greatest disappointment would have to be Garlic's role in Vampire tales. I was hoping to obtain information on this subject through this book. I know already that Garlic has an chemical that turns the blood of Porphirya victims acidic. Porphirya victims have been known to suffer similar symptoms as 'vampires'. The chemical found in garlic basically makes the Porphirya victim uncomfortable, resulting in a heated retreat from the plant.

I hate having to supplement material missed in this book in a review. This book has nothing I don't already know. The Garlic Lover's Handbook is basically a text with recipes and ... for joining a garlic lover's society forum. Perhaps the only good thing about this book was the history on Garlic and its uses.

Calculus Concepts: An Informal Approach to the Mathematics of Change

Authors: Don Latorre, John Kenelly, Iris Fetta, Cynthia Harris, and Laurel Carpentar
Amazon base price: $29.56
Used price: $8.94

Average review score:

If this is "Informal", I'd hate to see what "Formal" is.
Instead of actually showing any handy numerical processes used to figure out problems, this book tries to tell you via overly-wordy and remarkably garbled explanations in the middle of "real world" situations gathered from statistics. The authors' idea of "Informal" apparently means burying explanations under useless jargon. If you want to pass a Calculus class and don't already have a talent for mathematics, this is not the book to use. Use something that's straight to the point and ditch the "Informal Approach".

I'm Bill Moyers ....god of the planet
I wouldn't read ANYTHING by Bill Moyers. He is your typical narrow minded liberal with absolutely no contact with the real world. He thinks he is a god. Sorry Bill you are the biggest jerk on the face of the earth. Hey, God's gift to the human race, watch out there...don't hit your head while you try to go through that door, Bill.
