What I Know: This Book is Literary Torture
I read about halfway through this book, and then I gave up. I read James' "Turn of the Screw," and "Daisy Miller" in high school, and I remember liking the former and thinking the latter was just okay. (I know, I know, it's a major classic by one of America's most celebrated writers, but just because something has merit doesn't mean I like it better.) One of my all time favorite books was James' "Washington Square." It's hard for me to believe that the same man wrote "Square" and "Maisie." This book is only for MAJOR Henry James enthusiasts.

Murky and weird
I don't regret having read this book, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't already into Henry James. The style is hard to understand, apparently because it was dictated, and the subject matter is even more obscure. I don't think Henry James had much experience with children: even assuming that Maisie is twisted by her strange situation, she doesn't talk like any child I know or can imagine. Weird moral undercurrents and jealousy take up most, if not all, of the novel. I wouldn't take claims of this book's modernity too seriously - it's more on the byzantine side. Read The Europeans instead: so much more fun!

A Modern James' Story
I think this is the most modern of Henry James' stories. Young Maisie's parents divorce and then seem to spend their lives using her to get a teach other, until they develop other interests. Sadly, the story resonates today - immature, self-centered parents and the children that they create. Henry James' insight into the life of such a child is brilliant.

Okay, but other books are out there.
Like I said in a precious review, I like National University, but they could have chosen a different book. I am Caucasian, white, Christian, heterosexual, male, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and let me tell you, this book will make it seem that the whit people in this country are racist bigots. And that we are trying to indoctrinate every single child that comes to America while keeping all the other people in lower classes. That is how I felt.

I was shocked by how biased this book is. I am beginning to think that the publishers Allyn and Bacon have an agenda.

One of the only topics I liked about this book is the short parts at the end of each chapter that tells the reader different ideas for making a professional portfolio. But, I can imagine that there are other books better.

Okay, for a Textbook
This book wasn't too bad, considering it is a textbook. If you're forced to read it for class, take heart! It's not too boring--once you get started, it actually moves pretty quickly, and you will learn a lot. If this isn't required for a class, I would not suggest curling up in front of the fireplace with this book, or, really, reading it at all, unless you're really into learning more about the basics of American Education.

Good, but lacking.
I concur with the other reviewer on most points stated. It's an easy, simple read, and unobtrusive mentally as well as physically. However...I feel that some subjects ARE danced around, rather than dealt with. Issues of sex/sexuality are, at best, skimmed. I have no interest in minute by minute detailing of sexual encounters. But to bypass whole realms of sexual exploration of such a dynamic young man is unfair to the curious reader. I also disagree with the notion that this IS OK for a first time reader. I'm of the mind that your first venture into someones life (especially Dean!) should be commited and enlightening. Here you will find little more than could be learned from a 30 minute t.v. blurb on Dean. I voraciously consume all Dean bios, hence I bought this regardless of my suspicions (and later confirmations) about its shortcomings. I 'liked' the book, but can see no REAL NEED for this book in a serious collection. It's fantastic for someone doing an essay or report on Dean-it might even make them a true fan. But please buy a book that will not only draw you in completely, but leave you with a full knowledge of all sides of James Dean. Buy "Little Boy Lost" by Joe Hyams,"James Dean-Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Paul Alexander, and "James Dean-Mutant King" by David Dalton. These are of a worthy caliber to display proudly in a personal collection of LITERATURE.

Short and to the Point: James Dean by William Hall
The editor describes the Sutton Pocket Biographies as "Highly readable brief lives of those who have played a significant part in history, and whose contributions still influence contemporary culture". This phrase neatly summarizes "James Dean" by William Hall very well.

It is a short book, about 100 small pages. Almost 50 years since his death, James Dean still has a substantial influence on contemporary culture. The book covers the principal facts and chronology of James Dean's short life. There is no whitewashing of gay issues, no unsubstantiated unsavory speculations and no new material. As such it is a useful and inexpensive book for someone who wants "Just give me the facts, m'am". It is a useful introduction to the life of James Dean if this is the first biography that you are reading. True die-hard fans will want more.

Couldn't do it !
I was forced to give it only 1 star because I couldn't get past page 30!
I really heard good things about it, but still.
If anyone can tell me something intresting about it...

The best
McClure writes a prequel to his Trompie Kramer/Mickey Zondi series that haunts the emotions as it satisfies the curiosity. McClure has said in an interview that he identifies with Zondi, although he "didn't realize it until someone told him." Here we see into Zondi's past at mission school as well as how both he and Kramer met their mates, Miriam and the Widow Fourie. I found the predictions of their deaths by the piestess of the Song Dog spine chilling and touching at the same time.

Statistics for Business and Economics (Prentice Hall International Editions)

Mediocre entre to statistical analysis
I used the 7th Edition in a graduate course in statistics and was frustrated both by the text's poor organization and its failure to present key statistical concepts clearly. I had to resort frequently to other sources to clarify topics that were poorly presented in the Prentice Hall text, and tended to find much simpler explanations outside of the text. The problem sets are particularly troublesome, as many of them do not appear to relate to the section in which they are contained and insufficient explanations are offered in the answer key. I recommend you look elsewhere.

Totally unnecessary
After buying the seventh and the eighth edition of Statistics for Business and Economics. The two are pretty much the same. So, save your money, and fight back the publishing company by not purchasing this book.

A practical guide for the manager
I first used this book as a student-I found it useful then, today I insist that all managers reporting to me review, and use, the concepts and techniques provided by the authors.

The book is useful, in that concepts are well explained, the examples are relevant, but most important for me is that it provides managers who have little or no experience in determining project costs with a handy means (including formulae and worked examples) of doing so.

I have tried to get copies of the most recent edition, the popularity seems to be such that the book is sold out. I most readily recommend this to anyone who needs to justify capital expenditure, who needs to do project costing, and who has to prepare proposals for submission to the boss (or the board of directors)in order to obtain funds for capital expansion, refurbishment or simply equipment upgrades.

Hypnosis: A Jungian Perspective
Published in Hardcover by Guilford Press (16 June, 1989)
Author: James Hall
Amazon base price: $32.00
Used price: $15.98
Average review score:

For the Jung at heart
This book is probably a great book if you view life from the Jungian perspective, and is as much a book about the Jungian approach as it is about hypnosis. It is not a how to do it book by any means, but designed to allow those with Jung's leanings to make use of hypnosis. Very few Jungian hypnotherapists exist, and in that sense the book is great as it opens up a new avenue for those with a mindset that didn't allow for use of hypnosis. But for others it may be a disappointment. Not an easy read, it requires a basic knowledge of the Jungian perspective to understand. If you don't have that, read some Jung first, and then the book will be more meaningful and useful.

Jung: Interpreting your Dreams
In this book, Author James A. Hall attempts to explain some of the key concepts of Jungian dream interpretation. I felt that he did an adequate job, with perhaps a bit too much emphasis on the history of Jung and Freud, and not enough insight as to dream interpretation. He did, however, explain the best way to determine what the symbols and motifs of dreams mean to you as an individual, as opposed to blatantly claiming, "dreaming of a snake means loss of control". I felt that, all and all, anyone wishing to learn propper dream interpretation could benefit from this book.
