I think this book is much more enjoyable if you read it after you have visited the Alhambra; two Moorish palaces that sit on top of a mountain in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range of Spain, palaces of incredible architecture and setting, the last outpost of the Moors in Spain. Christopher Columbus waited for 6 years before Queen Isabell would give him ships, she made him wait until the Moors were driven out of Spain. When the Alhambra finally falls, Coloumbus is given permission and ships for his quest a few days later, and the next year the Spanish Inquisition starts.
All of this comes to you if you visit the very romantic/historic city of Granada and the Alhambra, and after seeing the Alhambra restored, having walked its rooms and grounds, having listened to the fountains, letting your immagination run, then read this book, after you return home. Washington Irving's stunt of taking up residence in the rundown, forgotten Alhambra of his time seems even more fantastic. In fact, if you are going to Spain, buy a copy of this book in Granada; they are sold everywhere in different languages, and have pictures of paintings done in the period around Irving's stay. If you haven't been to the Alhambra, you should go.

"Tales of the Alhambra" is must-reading for the traveler in Spain. Irving is best remembered in this country for his collections of American folklore, like the stories of Rip Van Winkle and the Headless Horseman, but in Spain they remember him for the Alhambra stories -- in fact, there's a hotel named in his honor in Granada. Irving lived in that beautiful old Moorish palace at a time when it was a neglected ruin, and his wonderful descriptions, interspersed with the folk-tales that he collected from the people of Granada, helped to spark interest in repairing and restoring the monument. The folk tales, told in Irving's inimitable, witty style, usually deal with romantic elopements, or buried treasure, or both. My personal favorite is the story of the young prince living in the Generalife (the beautiful summer palace) who learned the language of the birds. That one is fantasy, but it's true that there was hidden treasure in the Alhambra: the palace itself, its architecture and decoration, and we have Irving to thank for rediscovering it.

A great book to read while traveling in spain. If you are going to Alhambra, read this book! It will bring the palace alive for you. The writing is very accessable, and easy to follow for having been written so long ago.

Noelle's and Daniel's resurrection stories are symbolic of someone else's and will stay with you long after you place the book lovingly on the shelf. I cannot recommend this one highly enough.

Again, Greeley paints a picture of the lives of an Irish Catholic family. Strangely enough, I read this book before I read Ascent Into Hell, and I have yet to read Thy Brother's Wife. I'm moving backwards in the series, but it still makes sense. I liked this book a lot more than Ascent. It is more down to earth, familial, and just plain easier to understand. I can relate pretty well to the girl. I can't seem to remember her name, but the green eyes, long red hair, pale irish skin are what graced the cover of the edition that I read. It's horrible the things she has to go through, but the book is worth it in the end. A must-read for anyone who likes their faith and would like to see it tested.

My introduction to the Irish-American mileu, and what fun it was! This story comes across as a 1940's movie plot with a modern twist. It's a wonderful journey into nostagia for anyone who remembers the Korean War, or grew up in that era (like me) , but it's a mystery, too, and so much more. Father G. has an an uncanny ability to enter a woman's mind and let the reader in at the same time. I've often wondered how he developed such insight and compassion for the human condition and I think I've figured out his source--the confessional! If you like the series "Touched By An Angel," you'll love Andrew Greeley's books. I've read them all and all I can say is "Keep 'em coming, Father G!"

When Maigret meets a serial killer, it's a dramatic face to face and, as usually, Maigret can understand why the killer acts in such an horrible way. Maigret don't excuse the killer but can understand. Like said Simenon : "Understand but not judge".

This is one of my very favorite Simenon novels; superbly paced and brilliant characterizations.

"Baseball's Best: Five True Stories" tells about some of the great moments in baseball history that got some of its greatest players into the Hall of Fame. Andrew Gutelle tells the story of Babe Ruth's "called shot" in the 1932 World Series, Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak in 1941, opening day in 1947 when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, the tragic irony of Roberto Clemente's 3000th and last hit in 1972, and Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's career home run mark in 1974. Each story is illustrated with historic photographs and paintings by Cliff Spohn. Like Gutelle's book on "All-Time Great World Series Games," this Step 4 Book (Grades 2-4) does not shortchange the young readers for whom it is intended. A lot of times authors skimp on the details and provide a mere sketch of what happened, but Gutelle really does tell the complete story. When it comes to writing about baseball for young readers, Gutelle is an all-star.

This book is a thorough, well-thought-out reference of major motion picture directors. It's organized like an encyclopedia and in every description of a director are references to other directors in bold face type. The idea being that after reading a section on, say, Woody Allen, you could then go to Frederico Fellini, who was highlighted in Woody's bio and so on. Excellent book. I can't understand why it was taken out of print or why it might not have sold well.

"Patience of a Saint" is a typical Greeley story. It contains some excellent images and metaphors of the Catholic Church, some good mystery, some sex, and some violence. It fits Greeley's perfect equation of what to include in a sell-able story. But even with all the expected story parts, it remains one of his better stories, delving into a person's growth as an adult. It is reminiscent of the Biblical story of Saint Paul's conversion, set in modern-day Chicago, with some contemporary images thrown together to show us what Paul may have gone through if he had lived in our time. An interesting idea, a good read, and if you take the time, a thought-provoking way to approach the Bible story as well as middle age.

This is a wonderful book. The author suggests wonderful possibilities of grace and love for our lives. It is a book that restores faith and replenishes the soul. Oh, and it's a great love story. Not your typical boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back; this is a wonderful tale about a man who discovers the true depth and meaning of his love for his wife--with no small assistance from God. In a "cynical" age this book is a rare, complex, affirmation of true love and grace. This is my favorite Greeley story.

This book haunted me for many days. Its about the hard times of a young southern girl in the mountains and her family. This book will touch your heart. It is funny at times,heartbreaking and it makes you wonder how far into the despair of life we can go.This girl keeps her dignity through it all and have to raise her siblings most of the time.I'm sure deep in poverty stricten areas, like now and in the past, this story may touch on what may have occured in real life to some unforunate few.
The first night, I read this book all the way through. It grips your attention and its hard to put down. You just must find out what happens to this girls life next.Its indepth and put you in the heart of the mountains, her home, her family and her heart. A MUST read. Very touching. I loved this book. V.C Anderews best work. Next, Flowers in the attic.

THE WAY THE WILLIES IS DESCRIBED THE PAIN AND THE HUNGER THE FAMILY WENT THROUGH CAN ACTUALLY PUT ME THERE IN MY IMMAGINATION. HEAVENS LIFE THROUGHOUT THE SERIES OF BOOKS IS ONE OF MANY STRUGGLES THAT ONE CAN HOPE FOR HER TO ACCOMPLISH. HEAVEN WAS THE FIRST V.C. ANDREWS BOOK THAT I HAD EVER READ AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH I JUST HAD TO READ MORE AND MORE OF HER NOVELS. NOW 27 YEARS OLD AND 4 WORN OUT HEAVEN BOOKS LATER I DECIDED TO NAME MY LAST DAUGHTER HEAVEN, AND I OFTEN WONDER IF MS. ANDREWS KNOWS WHAT AN EFFECT HER BOOK HAS ON PEOPLE TO MOVE THEM IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY WOULD WANT TO NAME A CHILD AFTER A BOOK COVER. JUST TO LET HER KNOW IF SHE WERE TO EVER READ THIS THAT I LOVE HER AND HER WORK AND WILL ALWAYS ENJOY READING HER NOVELS. THANK YOU

This was the first V.C. Andrews book I read, but it wasn't my favorite. However, it was very good nonetheless. Heaven is a spirited character, and I like the description of the setting, as well as the cover. I have noticed that the real V.C. Andrews wrote great prologues and opening chapters. GW's prologues tend to be about an airplane ride into London or New York, or letters that begin with "Dear Mommy and Daddy" (ugh). Heaven has a wonderful beginning, and end. The characters have a lot of depth as well. I found Luke Sr. to be a very intriguing person. Tom was the most fun. I have read the whole series, and the first book is the best, followed closely by Dark Angel. The final installments are pretty awful, though interesting enough.

This is a great book for beginners using the 8088 concepts for programming and interfacing.Clears most of your doubts without consulting your lecturer

I Bought this book on an impulse at the book shop while buying some books on programming. I've never regreted that decision. Its a really good book dealing with the simple basics of microprocessors and digital electronics along with fundamentals of assembly language programming. Any one who wants to learn more about how computers work should buy this one..... I definitely rate it 5-star.

This type of writing is included excellent contents and I like all subjects in it. I am trying to teach the chapters. I don't have an original book. I've borrowed one from the library. I think this one is an old version. I have difficulty get it and borrowing. I always recommend it to students. I want to know if you have and on the CD some documents like this.If I have all documents about this book I will actually help my students. As far as I'm concerned all instructors interested in the microprocessors should read this book.
