An intriguing aperitif, but not quite the main attraction
Canetti presents a readable overview of Kafka's intense correspondence with Felice Bauer, providing a rough biographical sketch of the author during this turbulent (two abortive engagements to the same woman) yet productive (Metamorphosis, e.g.) time in his life. I don't think Canetti succeeded in proving his notion that Kafka's landmark novel The Trial is a fictionalized representation of his oddly doomed relationship with Felice, but he does point out several interesting parallels which can enhance your enjoyment of Joseph K's misadventures. The real value of Canetti's book is, in my opinion, the fact that it will probably inspire you to read Kafka's own diaries and the actual letters to Felice themselves, and probably with a greater appreciation as well.

A nice reference book
During a Politics of Developing Areas class I stumbled across this book while researching my paper on Lebanon. The book itself provided helpful insights into the Lebanese legal system in simple plain terms that everyone can benefit from. While I would not claim that the book is a riveting read, it cannot be beat as a reference tool for anyone interested in Lebanon. The book also contained excerpts of Lebanese history that explain the existance of some laws in the country.
Lectures on the Theory of Games (Annals of Mathematics Studies, No 37)

Be there when the field of game theory was born
Princeton University Press is doing the mathematical world a favor by publishing their annals of mathematics series. It is designed to make available to all some of the seminal papers and lectures in many areas of mathematics. This book contains a republication of the lectures in the introductory theory of games that Harold Kuhn presented to a group of upper level undergraduate and graduate students in 1952. For these reasons, reading them will not only teach you the basic theory of games, but also give you some of the historical perspective on how the theory arose. The level of presentation is just right, and Kuhn does not have the ensuing fifty years of game theory analysis to fall back on in his explanations, so he is very clear in his statements.
The topics are the standard ones for introductory game theory: the representation of a game as a matrix, computation of optimal strategies by employing matrix operations, algorithms used in the analysis of games, strategies for infinite games with decision trees and games with perfect information. None of it was new to me, but it still held my attention, which is a high compliment.
Time has not dimmed the light on these lectures, and this is a book that can still be used in basic game theory classes.

Recent visitor of Wrangell/St. Elias National Park
The beauty of this book is in the photograghs! Herbon does well to use a simple, interesting text, which includes just enough history to make the pictures come alive, but not too much where you will lose interest. The photos speak a thousand words!
I would have enjoyed some photos from more parts of the Park from the ground. Most photos were strictly from the air or in Kennicott or McCarthy. Since I am planning a backcountry trip there in Aug 2000 I would have enjoyed pictures from the areas that hikers are venturing to.
I would recomend the book for anyone planning to vistit McCarthy/ Kennicott and the Wrangell/ St. Elias Natl. Park.

An unusual view to the criminalization system
Robert Elias give us in this book an unusual view of the juditial and the criminalization process in general. Over the common explanations given by many "law and order" policy makers to various social problem, Elias show us another approach to the same issues in a very different manner achieving significant revelations. A fine example is his approach to the police institution, where Mr. Elias reveals his role as victimizer and also as a victim.

It's a Coloring Book!
This is a nice little version of Disney's Sleeping Beauty, but be aware - it is a coloring book. I thought I was buying a regular paperback Golden Book. Was I surprised! As far as coloring books go, it is a nice one. The story of Sleeping Beauty is told from beginning to end. There is a wide variety of things to color - animals, fairies, people. It's also fun because of the "shape" feature; it's not your usual rectangular book. Unfortunately for me, I wanted a pre-colored book to read to my daughter, but if you are looking for a coloring book, this is a nice one.

Very well concieved, but...
... it does need to be a little more comprehensive. The only areas dealt with are the abdomen, neck, and some topics on the extremeties. It would be more beneficial to students if more areas are covered, and in greater detail. Limitations on the thickness of the text- which is meant to be portable- can easily be gotten around by using thinner paper (witness the miracle that is the Wash manual, for instance). Overall, the book is an EXCELLENT idea.

on the trail of the Noblists
Very good writing.Intellectually stimulating.Great deal of philosophy and study of human nature.Just a bit too much of literary rambling but in 85% keept my attention properly.I liked the insider scoop on the 1920s art scene of Berlin and Vienna.I don't like tha he doesn't hint the outcome of his only true romance in this book ( in real life he marries her).
ps
Even with his fascination with the "crowd" one feels that deep down he never belonged to any.And good for him...:)
