cabrini
I'v only read a few pages but from my point of view it is great it really shows the history in a fun way. But for those who see my review its a great book.

Great read.
This is a great book. I love the perspective. For once, it's coming from someone other than a narrator. It really makes you look at the destruction and chaos in a new light. I live in Chicago, so it really hits home to me as well.

I really liked it. Easy reading too. Great pictures!

A masterpiece via voice and sight.
"Cabrini-Green" takes you from the comfort of your chair and puts you in notably the worst housing projects in America, Chicago's Cabrini Green housing development. It describes the vivid and promising past, the failure and corruption that led to it's downfall, and it's future as part of Chicago's urban renaissance. David Whitaker puts multiple interviews with life-long residence, ranging from the elderly to school children. The pictures are breathtaking, consisting of stunning black-and-whites on almost every page, illustrating the humble beginnings, the tenants, and the current demolition of the high rise projects. This book is a must have for any person interested in a less documented part of Chicago's gritty history. But a word of warning, people looking for a more fact based view on the topic shouldn't read this book, it is a compilation of personal accounts, and is very biased.

Brilliantly fluid overveiw, but a little dated.
"Blueprint for a green economy" is an excellent overveiw of the field of environmental economics. The author covers much hotly debated, technical (and now possibly dated) areas of environmental economics in a way that is easily accessable to the lay audience. The book explains efficient and affordable environmental policy at a national level(at a global level is explained in the sequel), and rejects the previous 'command and control' policies of the past.

However, what seperates this book from other books on the subject of economics, is its philosophical tint. In one of the most interesting chapters the author explains the "tyranny of discounting" and goes on to show that this may not always be a rational and equitable process for the valuation of future hapiness, or suffering. Indeed there are many forms of efficiency but these may not always be equitable. The implications being that current reduction of capital for future generations is not just.

Overall, although the book is over a decade old, it is still both interesting and relevent for anyone that cares about the future state of the world.

The best route towards environmentally responsible economies
I am glad such a precious book of reference on how to manage the economies in a more socially and environmentally sustainable way, if that is ot a pleonasm, has had more recent editions. Its first edition became my general guide in the nine years I have served as the directing officer of the Bahia State Environmental Agency. The results from the ideas presented in the book were just very good. Hence, the book can be classified by me as "overwhelming". I could say much more, but let me stop here with the wishes that the authors continue researching ways to promote ecology and economy with hand-in -hand systems, as foreseen by the words of Franklin Roosevelt's, as shown in with bronze letters placed on beautiful and shiny red granite planes at the FDR Memorial, in Washington, D.C.. Best regards to all, Durval Olivieri.

useful introduction to CUSUM Charts
Much like Shewhart charts CUSUM Charts are used to detect changes in a process over time. They are commonly used by engineers to do statistical process control. Doug Hawkins is a statistician and professor with expertise in multivariate analysis and outlier detection. Many years ago he wrote a nice little monograph on outliers. This is a nicely written text that is amenable to engineers. It introduces the reader to the basic concepts in quality control and explains in a elementary way the basic theory underlying the Shewhart and the CUSUM charts. This is followed by a chapter on design issues for CUSUM charts. Later chapters provided background on important related probability distributions, first continuous and then discrete. The general theory is given in Chapter 6. It includes some treatment of the general exponential family. Although probability theory is important, only essential topics are covered. It includes some real examples and special topics. The special topics include multivariate charting, regression adjustment, correlated data and a brief discussion of time series methods. CUSUM charts can also be used to detect outliers but are somewhat slow at detecting them. In fact, I once wrote a paper comparing CUSUM charts with a time series method for detecting outliers. However, in the control chart context the intent is to detect changes in a process which are often reflected in trends. For that purpose an outlier can lead to a false alarm signal from a CUSUM chart(very short term problem that is corrected without intervention). In Section 9.1 a Winsorization technique is describe that modifies the control chart to detect the changes in the mean or variance of the process as it is designed to but without causing the false alarm presented by a single outlier.

Excellent source for practicing engineers
Text treats both practical applications as well as limitations of the CUSUM techniques.

Underlying therory for CUSUM chart development using various statistical distributions is treated in later chapters.

The authors have included internet address for downloading application software. The software is compatable with any Windows based system and Excell package.

A Tale of Troy
A Tale of Troy is the easy way of reading Homer's Iliad. It's the same story, but under 300 pages and is more user friendly. A Tale of Troy describes the beginning and end of the Trojan War. It retells from the Iliad the stories of Achilles, Hector, Odysseus and his later adventures home, and many other fascinating stories. The only downside to this book is that since it is a simplified version of The Iliad, to fully understand some of the dialoue and references a reader mus know some backround of Greeks and Roman mythology(You can still enjoy the book without even heard of Zeus before, but the story goes better when you know about The Olympian War etc.)This book is great for any young teen between 13-15 who likes adventure and action.

Tale of Troy--- The Ultimate Legend of Mythology!
In this fantastic, beautifully-crafted story, mythology expert Roger Lancelyn Green weaves the tale of the last big "Hoorah" of the Heroic age. Green's colorfully-written portrayal of the fantastic battles fought by Greece against the wicked Troy is a must-have for any avid reader! He describes in vivid detail the bravest heroes of the age, from clever and cunning Odysseus to brave and strong Achilles, who fight zealously to win back the tender Helen, told to be the most beautiful woman in the world, but stolen by the evil city of Troy. Sit back and marvel as you witness the ongoing struggle between cities, each fight sequence written to put you right in the action in this absolutely fabulous book that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Thrilling, Amazing!
In one word gripping!....I couldn't stop reading the book, page after the page, the author takes us into a world that seems to be real but is it? The book is filled with great thrilling moments from beginning to end. A must read!

Highly recommended
This would make a great movie! It's pretty easy to read with a few cool twists. I'd recommend reading it.

Gripping! I couldn't get enough!
One of the best books I've read in a long time. Gripping and intense, I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. As the book takes you through the warped experiences of it's protagonist, David Kane, you will find yourself captured by the twists and turns his life takes - all courtesy of The Green Light Cemetery. Bravo!

Good but needs updates
I have come to like this book as it has given me a zillion new ideas and especially where to find those things. Each section is organized with lot of colored pics of houses and brand products. Although the idea of mentioning the names of the companies which sell products in the end of a chapter is excellent but it needs updates. Many telephone numbers are incorrect or have changed, as I tried many of them. And there is NO MENTION OF WEBSITES at all which I find surprising. Most of these companies have websites now.
Overall a good book/guide to start with. And then move on to more specific catalogs/publications.

Fascinating to this beginner
Alternative building is a recent interest of mine. I hope to have my next home built in a way that is more in harmony with nature and less in harmony with sending my money to utility companies! Looking through this book introduced me to ideas about building that are new to me. The book includes information on where to purchase the technologies discussed in the book. I recommend this book to fellow novices who want to know what is available in Earth friendy architecture.

A treasury of information
This remarkable compendium has useful information for all country builders. It includes directories with sources of building materials, finishes, solar systems, water and waste systems, wood stoves, magazines and newsletters, and much more.

Not the right cookbook for me
I'm sure every recipe in this cookbook is delicious, but I seldom use it and regret buying it. This would be a good book for people who see cooking as a hobby: something they do occasionally, for fun, without worrying about time, convenience, health or expense. For everyday cooking, it's pretty much useless. The recipes are all quite time-consuming and complicated, requiring, for instance, special stock which must be homemade and for which store-bought substitutes would be unacceptable. Lots of the recipes are heavy on the butter and cream, which is fine for special occasions but not the way I want to cook on a regular basis.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for special-occasion recipes. Everything I've cooked out of it has turned out great, and I would definately consult it for dinner parties or similar occasions. But I don't think it will be a particularly useful cookbook for busy people trying to eat in a reasonably healthy manner.

Complicated, but worth it
This, together with Yamuna Devi's "The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking," is my favorite cookbook.

As has been mentioned in other reviews here, the recipes are somewhat complicated. I am slowly working my way through the book and have already attempted almost 50 of the recipes.

The first few recipes were daunting and I was tempted to give up on the book, but the more recipes I tried, the easier it got. I found that I was learning something.

As others have mentioned, I also don't have all day to prepare a meal, and more often than not, I will only cook from this book on weekends, though to be fair, not all of the recipes are as time-consuming as they seem.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who also considers cooking a hobby and not just a means to an end.

Greens Cook Book is Top-Notch
I have been to The Greens Restaurant in San Francisco a number of times since 1991, including one special occasion: my best friend's wedding reception in 1996. The restaurant is superb, one of the best in SF and in any city! My husband turned me on to the cook book back in 1992, and since then we refer to it more often than The Joy of Cooking. Our favorite recipes include the mushroom pizza with jack and dry jack cheese, and the mushroom lazagne. These are not beginner's recipes, but the directions are easy to follow if you're familiar with all the standard cooking techniques. The recipes are out of this world!

I personally am not a vegetarian, but these recipes take your vegetables and taste buds beyond your wildest dreams. I would recommend this cook book to anyone who likes cooking and eating fine food. If you're looking for easy recipes that take 10 minutes, you'll have to settle for hamburger helper or kraft macaroni and cheese... this is not the place for you! But if you love cooking and love trying new recipes, this is one to add to your collection.

Building Green in a Black and White World
Published in Paperback by Home Builder Pr (01 January, 2000)
Author: David Ritchey Johnston
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

Good for contractors, not for home buyers
I purchased this book thinking that it would be a good resource for remodelling a home, I was wrong. The information contained is good for a contractor that wants to develop a "green building" image, complete with advise for dealing with media, marketing strategies and sales. It appears to have very little practical advise with regard to green building techniques and supplies. It might be a good reference for a contractor but not very helpful for the ecologically minded home buyer.

Incredible resource for building smart!
I sat down with this book and read it in one sitting. This is an enormous amount of research and practical experience in one volume. It's appropriate not only for builders that want to go "green", but for environmentally conscious folks looking to build. The book is filled with loads of information on making the "right" choices in building, and most of these choices do not cost more, in fact, many save money in years to come. As a novice, I found the information to be easy to understand, and have come away with a real plan on the building of my next house. Having read this book, it's hard to understand how anyone could not choose to build green. It's just plain smart! I think every builder looking for a competitive edge, should read this book, it's filled with marketing & sales strategies. In Building Green, David Johnston shares a lifetime of experience in the business of building environmentally smart.

Building Green in a Black and White World
I've known the author David Johnston for years. He knows more about green construction than anyone else I know. David knows what works and doesn't work, because he's tried things himself and collected thousands of stories from builders, homeowners and city officials who've put to the test all manner of building techniques, materials, installations and standards.

In some ways, this book is David's life story about his personal evolution as an environmental builder from the "passive solar" 70's to the "green" 90's. This book summarizes all his collected knowledge in a well-organized manner. You can use it as a reference to find specifically what you want to know, or you can read it all the way through and enjoy the story, as well as the meaty content.

If you're a builder looking for a new niche or already doing green construction, this book can really help you. The book is loaded with information about the market for green construction and the values that underlie peoples' desires for indoor air quality, energy effiency, durability and planetary respect. It also has nuts and bolts information about what really works when handled by average subs. As a builder who works in environmentally friendly ways, I mostly work with clients who hold similar values. This book will be very useful to loan as a reference to potential clients.

If you're a homeowner thinking of remodeling or new construction, this book will really help you. It is full of case histories and lessons learned. It gives lots of real world, practical examples of green materials and specifications. It is a nuts and bolts book that explains options, things to consider and logical choices.

The author also provides a rich compendium of state-of-the-art resources in the Appendicies. At least as valuable as the book itself, the Appendicies provide comprehensive, annotated lists of experts in Green Building, Municipal and Homebuilder sponsored Green Builder Programs, Green construction standards and state-of-the-art Green construction information(with how-to-contact details).

As a environmental builder for more than 20 years, I highly recommend this book. As a concerned citizen of planet Earth, I highly recommend this book. Everyone and anyone could read and enjoy this book; anyone concerned with construction or remodeling projects really MUST READ this book!
