Tesla had many interests
I found this piece of writing and other non technical works by Tesla invaluable when doing essays on creative thinking and problem solving. Tesla was good at describing how he did his thinking.

Alternative Perspective.........Interesting, eye opening
"The war broke out in Europe ....It was obvious that enslavement was the immediate prospect for the people of the Western Ukraine and Western Byelorussia, who had been forcibly incorporated into Poland in 1920. On 17 Sept. 1939 Soviet Troops marched into Poland to protect the lives and property of these populations. The Soviet border moved to the west. The anti-Soviet campaign that was launched in the American Press as a result of this action demonstrated clearly the 'double standard' by which the United States sometimes judges international actions." This book represents a novel venture for both scholorship and publishing -- it is an account of Soviet-American relations written for an American audience by Soviet historians. Although the authors point out that getting Soviets and Americans to agree on their interrelations is no easier than was docking Soyuz or Apollo in space, they see this book as a positive influence on mutual cooperatiion between the two countries in the post-Cold War years. The authors trace the course of U.S. - Soviet relations from the years prior to the American Revolution to the human rights issues of the 1970s. For the most part, they see those relations as being characterized by American failure to take advantage of opportunities to improve them. Woodrow Wilson, according to the authors, adopted and anti-Soviet position from the start; his fourteen points had a two-fold Bolshevik direction. And FDR treated the USSR with as much respect and understanding as he felt necessary to make it play its proper role in America's balance of power straegy -- and no more. Finally, the authors assess the prospects for peaceful coexistance, which they see as an objective necessity for international relations.

Loved this book!!
My grandparents bought this book for me and I have really, really enjoyed Mr. Werngren's perspective on Swedish heritage. Most people don't think of Swedes as pioneers, but this book is a great documentary of that historical fact. His pictures and text support each other very well, and it's even made me buy a Swedish dictionary to read the Swedish in the book! Definitely a must-have.

Tesla Coil Builder's Guide to the Colorado Springs Notes of Nikola Tesla
Published in Spiral-bound by Twenty First Century Books (01 November, 1999)
Author: Richard L. Hull
Amazon base price: $27.50
Average review score:

No-Nonsense explanation of what Tesla really did in CS!
Richard has really outdone himself this time! The guide the the Colorado Springs Notes is a compehensive explanation of the day-to-day happenings is Nikola Tesla's Colorado Springs Laboratory. This book cuts through all the hype and myth and takes a more objective and scientific look. Unlike other books, that claim terrifying lightning discharges along with wireless power and spaceships, Hull's book conveyes the truth. It is all very down to earth and believable, all of the author's statements are based on fact, not wild-eyed speculation. The guide contains a wealth of invaluable information on synergistic coil building techniques which are so many times overlooked or neglected by the hobbyist who wants a fool proof "recipe". This guide is written with a very human touch, so don't about being bored by too much dry, raw data. Even if you don't own the notes, this book is a must have for any coiler or Teslaphile alike. This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

TESLA WAS DEFINITELY 'OUT OF THIS WORLD!"
NIKOLA WAS DEFINITELY A MAN OF MYSTERY -- THIS BOOK OFFERS A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT APPROACHMuch has been written about Nikola Tesla and his great inventions. This book tackles Tesla's work in a slightly different way by suggestion that Tesla might have been a time traveler or a being from another planet who was abandoned here and adopted by an Earthly couple.Though at first this may seem to be utter nonsense,a closer look would indicate that the author (a seasoned writer on metaphysical and New Age topics, and a fantastic prophet in his own right) might have a good point. For many of the things Tesla invented were decades -- if not a century -- a head of their time.HOW THEN DID HE GET THESE IDEAS?One source says that Tesla communicated with space beings and actually constructed a telescope-like device to enhance his ability to "speak" with extraterrestrials. Naturally, this was long before the SETI movement or interest in UFOs. So what gives?Though relatively short, this book does offer some very useful insights into the life of Tesla that you will no find elsewhere. It is well written and straight to the point. It is not a boring rehash of previously published material, but a seemingly bright new approach to a subject that is of increasing interest.

The artistic vision of Grandma Moses
Grandma Moses, who died at the age of 101 in 1961, was one of the most beloved folk artists in the United States. "The Year with Grandma Moses," by W. Nikola-Lisa, brings together 13 of her classic paintings, along with brief excerpts from the artist's own autobiographical writings. The result is a beautiful tribute to a remarkable artist.

The book opens with a great full-color photographic portrait of Grandma Moses at work at her painting table in 1952. A brief but informative biography sets the stage for the treasures that follow.

Grandma Moses was a rural New York farm wife for most of her long life, and her paintings reflect this world. Colorful, lively, and rich in detail, these paintings record and celebrate the daily lives of farm communities. We see classic farmhouses, a horse-drawn carriage, children climbing a tree, cows grazing, people engaging in chores, and other sights.

Because the book focuses on a year in Grandma's world, the paintings reflect all of the seasons. We see the green fields of springtime, the brilliant foliage of autumn, and the snowy landscapes of winter. "The Year with Grandma Moses" is a wonderful book that captures the spirit of an American creative legend.

Real-time neural network with a host of applications
I found this book to be a landmark contribution to the state-of-the-art in neural networks pardigm. It offers some exciting neural network topologies and a distinctly new kind of thinking -'local learning' in neural networks. The author Prof. Nik Kasabov deserves to be congratulated for writing this excellent book. His explanation throughout the book is very lucid and to the point. He introduces the concept of "evolving connectionism" in a succinct way. He included a rich assortment of connectionist methods, right from the scratch, with a clear exposition of the underlying training algorithms. The applications presented in the latter part of the book are as diverse as bioinformatics, financial engineering, speech recognition, brain study and image & video data processing. The authority with which these topics are presented speaks volumes of the enormous research work undertaken by Prof. Kasabov and his students. The references and extended glosary provided at the end are extremely useful to the reader. Another important aspect of this book is that it is suitable for all levels of readers such as student, researcher and practitioner. I started teaching some aspects of this book from this semester onwards. It is well received by the students. It must be in the shelves of those who look for the latest research in the area of neural networks. I enjoyed reading this book. Finally, if the phrase "real-time neural networks" is also added in the tag line (sub title) of the book, it could attract more users.

An exceptional book for computational biologists
This exceptional book provides a broad overview of the methods of extracting the knowledge (or in other words building model/system/theory) from the data in various areas: from information theory and artificial intelligence to genetics. It can be very useful for biologists, who wish to use modern computational methods for analysis of microarray data, regulatory networks, cancer, analysis of clinical trials, etc.

The first part (first seven chapters) of the book is devoted to the methods used in connectionists systems and here readers can find detailed description of the algorithms. In the second part (six chapters), which represents application of these methods, the book has a chapter devoted to the data analysis, modeling, and knowledge discovery in bioinformatics so it can be interesting for the biologists. This chapter describes how the neural network paradigm can be used in molecular biology and, in particular, for analysis in relatively new area -- microarray technology. The huge amount of data that were obtained in this area is still waiting for the efficient methods of knowledge extracting. In this chapter readers can also find the examples of using evolving connectionists learning systems for solving the problems of finding the patterns from DNA/RNA sequences, identification of intron/exon binding sites, gene profiling, protein structure prediction and dynamic cell modeling.

This excellent book is full of interesting examples, classification schemes, and figures.
Although this book will be more interesting for readers, which have been working in networking, it can be useful also for all researchers and students and any type of readers interesting in data analysis. This book is outstanding introduction for readers unfamiliar with the learning systems. The extended glossary and full-length reference list will help a lot for readers inexperienced in this area.

Reprint of late 1800s book - intense reading, poor transfer
I've read a borrowed copy of this; seeing that Amazon had it, I bought my own copy - I could see that digesting this material is going to take a while.

The text is all here, unabridged. The image quality of the illustrations leaves a lot to be desired with this edition, however. It looks like a second-generation xerox in spots. If this is a problem, do yourself a favor and look for the 1980's hardcover reprint. The images are much better in that one. That said, the substance of this book is thoroughly recommended for the serious student of electrical engineering as well as fans of Tesla.

Since this text was written in the late 1800s, and is reprinted here without alteration, the language can sometimes have the density of Shakespeare (without the poetry). Much of the phraseology has passed out of use in the last hundred years. This material is written for the intelligencia of Tesla's era, and not "dumbed down" for this age as many other books are. This is an advantage for someone who wants an authoratative viewpoint on this subject (who more authoratative than Tesla!), but poisonous to the casual reader.

Many of the inventions discussed in this book are now commonplace (for instance - the AC induction motor, fully described here, is in use everywhere). Nikola's own depth of understanding of the principles involved make this a thoroughly intense experience for those who are ready for it. Readers who can understand this material are going to experience the devine "Ah-ha" on a regular basis throughout this book. Others will be put to sleep.

This book will separate the men from the boys very quickly.

I thought it was wonderful
This book was so interesting. It gave a lot of information!

Tesla
It has the same information as all of the other books about Telsa. If you haven't read any of the books on Tesla you should buy this CD. But if you already have, there is no point to buy this CD.

Excellent Tesla Patent Collection!
This is an excellent collection of Nikola Tesla's patents. Included are Tesla's patents from Canada and England that I didn't even know existed. There are free Tesla patents on the internet but they fall short of what this collection has to offer.

Poor Style and Organization
I found this book very boring and tedious reading. The style of the book seems to vary as much as the number of authors. The concepts don't smoothly flow together. The book is a hodgepodge of technical information presented in patches by a huge bunch of authors. Obviously this book was an attempt to bring to market a book on XML as quickly as possible. The book doesn't provide enough examples or applications although it does present many examples on syntax. This may be a good reference book, but to really learn how to use XML I'm searching for another book.

For In-depth XML Ideas
Another excellent book by Wrox. Heed this books title "Professional XML". The strong point in this book for me was its in-depth DTD and WML coverage. I haven't found a book yet that describes WML as well, or at all for that matter.

I also plan on purchasing XSLT Reference Guide (also by Wrox) since this book doesn't go quite as far as I'd like into XSLT.

BORING BOOK
THIS IS MOST BORING BOOK I EVER READ
