This is one of those books that will keep you laughing. In this book all the gauls decided to compete in the Olympics against the Romans. It's a book that will put a smile on your face on a gloomy day.

Asterix and the Magic Carpet
Very good, the drawings were just beautiful. The story line flowed with the last story (Asterix and Son). The story never did explain why Cacofonix's voice brought rain every time he singed, but really did not matter. The whole Asterix series just seems to get better every book.

Asterix Chez Les Bretons
This is a great read for any fan of the series and for those who speak both French and English. Here is a book that would certainly lose something in translation. The characters in Britain speak French using English syntax. There are a number of good laughs to be found at English idioms translated directly into French: ("Je dis ceci est choquant." comes readily to mind). It's also nice to know that Asterix and Obelix are able to help their Breton cousins find their own magic potion in their struggles with Rome.

One of the Best
Asterix et le Chaudron (Asterix and the Cauldron) is one of the best of the Asterix books in French. Asterix is exiled from the village, when a cauldron full of coins is stolen while it is in his keeping.

Some of the very best jokes, and funniest situations, including a talking cooking pot, and the Roman tax collector, who talks in multiple choice. Also, the funniest ending, where something good finally happens to the hapless pirates who have been sunk so many times by our heros.

Asterix Latine?
Omnes linguae latinae studentes talibus operibus subventuros sperem.

This is a cute book, and a good excercise to learn a few new French words.

The Wild West revealed.
The Tenderfoot, indeed the whole Lucky Luke series, does for the Wild West, what Asterix did for the Roman Empire. Like Asterix, the stories are related in comic book form.

The story is set around the adventures of a fast shootin', laid back cowboy named Lucky Luke, and his faithful horse, Jolly Jumper. This particular story revolves around a well dressed, educated Briton (or 'Tenderfoot') coming out to the Wild West.

Like the rest of the Lucky Luke series, Rene Goscinny's great sense of humour shines through in the dialogue and set-ups. In particular, watch for the gun duel involving the Briton.

The artwork is great, and really captures the time-period. Both in the story and the illustration, it is clear that research of the time period has been undertaken, and often, at the end of the book there will be information on historical references, which can in itself make for one of the most enjoyable history lessons children of all ages could hope to have.

nice story, not as good as the best
The thing i like about asterix is that while they are said to be 'kids comics' they entertain almost any age group with their wit and touches of humor. This book runs a little low on the magnificently funny plots of all the rest, but it is still entertaining; very much so!

Buy "Asterix and the Big Fight" instead
This is the film version of "Asterix and the Big Fight" -- buy that one, not this -- it's just a rehash.

A remarkable piece of work!
It is indeed an artist's creation.Based on the all time legendary hero Asterix and his faithfulfriend and companion Obelix, this book has more twists and turns than a bowlful of sphagette! When the old druid Getafix gets injured and cannot make health portion which gives the gauls superhuman strength, their chief is challanged by another chief. If Vitalstatistix loses, he would lose the whole village! However, when Vitalstatistix becomes assured that the druid has been revived, he literally knocks his opponent out of his boots! The determination of Asterix to revive the druid and his loyalty to the chief has left an indelible impression on my mind. Like in all the other Asterix books, the Gauls are fearless and powerful. They fear nothing except the sky falling on their heads. Cacofonix is as tuneless as ever, and Fulliautomatix the blacksmith too is as rough and funny as ever. Dogmatix(he cries when trees are cut) has his own charm, and Asterix has lived upto expectations, All this has been strung together to make an engrossing book. This book is fun, floric and totally hilarious! I read it a long time ago, but its memory still 'lingers on to the inward of my eye, and my heart with pleasure fills.' Given the form of a film book, it is truly an artist's creation.I highly recommend it.

Asterix & the Great Divide

Somewhat dissapointing
First published in French in 1980 as 'Le Grand Fosse', this album was first published in English in 1981.

Chief Cleverdix sends his son Histrionix to the village by the sea, to call on the aid of Chief Vitalstatistix, to settle a dispute with his rival , Chief Majestix..
Asterix, Obelix and Getafix are as a result sent to the divided village.
This was the first book written by Uderzo alone, and is not one of the best. Much of the humour is recycled from earlier Astérix books, and the attempts at political satire are weak, unlike the superb political satire of 'Asterix and Caesar's Gift' for example. Uderzo would later prove that he could however, write, good Asterix comics, with such gems as 'Asterix and the Black Gold' and 'Asterix and The Magic Carpet'.

I wish I did not have to write this!
I love Asterix, I love French and Belgian comics. I grew up reading Tintin and Asterix and Lucky Luke and Spirou and the rest. But this adventure is terrible! Sorry M. Uderzo, I wish it was not so. Everytime I re-read this, I feel like I have read a horror story. Everything is so dark, Codfix is yucky, he is the worst character created. Of course, the death of a genius like Goscinny probably made his old friend very bitter. I give it a two because of the state of the art drawings. I put this one behind all others though. Who said Belgium was bad?

Excellent book!
This is one of the best Asterix books. In it, Asterix, Obelix, Getafix, and Dogmatix set off to help out another village troubled by a terrible internal division and threatened by the Romans. The reader will be delighted as the heroes of the story work to drive off the Romans, bring the village together, make a romance come true, and teach the villain of the story a good lesson, by Toutatis!
