The author unveils for us the strange and beautiful rituals of the religion known as Santeria, which is derived from the syncretism of Roman Catholicism, early forced on the Yoruba who were imported to Puerto Rico as colonial slaves, with their own African nature religion. Gonzalez-Wippler tells of her exposure to this religion while in the care of her nanny, Maria, a Yoruba descendant and devout follower of the faith.
The reader is privileged to read of how Maria gave her little ward the first initiation of children in Santeria on her fifth birthday, first taking her to church to say a rosary before the Mother Mary, then taking her to a secluded cove, anointing her lips with sugarcane syrup, and leading her naked into the ocean waves, chanting an invocation to Yemaya, whose symbol is the seven seas, and who is the mother of all things living. Maria explains to the child that Yemaya wears another face of the Virgin Mary, with dark skin and kind eyes, so that her dark skinned children can recognize her and receive her blessings. Maria explains to the child that, in bringing her to Yemaya in the ocean, she is showing her Our Lady in her full power.
There was another kind of santeria on the south side of San Antonio, where I grew up. When I asked parents and Sunday school teachers about the celebrants' odd processions, the shrines in their yards, the incomprehensible usages of Christian symbols, and their exotic botanicas, I was told that their religion was a kind of backwards, superstitious form of Christianity. "Santeria Experience" makes me wish that I had looked more closely, asked more questions, before it was too late.

The book is Gonzalez-Wippler's labor of love, recounting lifelong first hand experiences of santeria in the care of her Yoruba nanny, with an attitude of respect and reverence for this great faith.

Was I ever wrong! The characters in the Santerian legends have highly developed personalities, and the book reads like a novel. The stories are not separate, but fall into a progression, from the creation of the world to the ascent of the Orshas into heaven.
This book didn't make me feel stupid or uneducated for not having any prior knowlege of Santeria, it was an excellent introduction to the religion for me. I highly recommend that white Americans do not fall into the trap of self-absortion, and learn respectfully as much as we can about an interesting major American religion.
