Great Teaching Tool with Gorgeous Illustations
I used this book as the basis for a program on eagles prepared for children ages 5-9. The book provides lots of accurate facts about the eagle, its habitat requirements and how we can insure its viability. The illustrations are wonderful and enhance the technical story of the eagle being told by Gail Gibbons. I will use this book again for my own children and for programs focusing on eagles for the early elementary school age kids to learn about our eagle population on the James River.

Great reference
I read this book 2 years in a row for Spiders week at preschool. If you skip the history part, you're good! But its got a good reference book that is understandable at this age level. It talks about sizes, shapes and different webs. Very few non fiction books out there can be adapted for this age level with a variety of understanding---understanding this. But this is one of those books---and the kids love it too.

Stars book rates Stars from me
The Sky Is Full of Stars is an excellent and informatiive book for primary age kids. It gives lots of information about the night sky and constellations in an easy to understand format for children. Kids can take this book outside and find constellations following the directions in the book. I can't wait to use it in my second grade classroom!

Perfect for the preschooler or young grade schooler
In her appropriate matter-of-fact style, Gail Gibbons, explains how a skyscraper is built. The language chosen is well suited to children age four and up.

The story starts as the reason for the building -- people needing a place to live and work. It briefly touches on the work of the engineers and architects before it starts describing the actual construction. Although it doesn't go into great depth, enough information is provided to spur further research for older children. For younger children, their questions are easily answered by adults and/or by looking at the wonderful illustrations.

The illustrations are perfectly detailed -- not too complex nor too simple. They do a very nice job of depicting all the work that goes on during the construction. They show everything from digging and building the foundation, through building the framework, the interior finishing work and finally the tenets moving into the building.

The book covers some rather advanced concepts that may go over the heads of younger audiences. The core of the building is discussed, as is fireproofing the beams, and building the curtain wall. Still, they are not covered in such detail to lose younger children.

This very nice book is currently one of the favorites of my two and four year-olds. Gail Gibbons books are always well-liked.

Great book for young students learning about weather.
I am a student teahcer. When I had to plan a unit for my kindergarteners about weather, I did not know how to teach it on their level. This book really helped me to come up with the right words to help the students understand what I was trying to get across to them. GREAT BOOK!!! I checked it out from the library at the school I am working at; however, I WILL be getting my own personal copy. Thank you Gail!!!

Great behind-the-scenes look at the zoo
For all the children who go to the zoo and enjoy looking at the animals, Gail Gibbons presents a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at all the work that makes it possible. From the zookeepers arriving in the early morning to feed the animals and clean their cages and the vendors preparing for the zoo's visitors, to the security guard locking the main gate and patroling the empty walkways, the book does a nice job of giving children a more in-depth view of the zoo. Veterinarians help sick animals and monitor the birth of baby animals. Construction workers build a new exhibit. Zoo keepers prepare the special foods that the animals eat.

Both my boys were able to easily relate things they'd seen at our zoo to the book. Their next visit, too, was filled with applying what they'd seen in the book to our zoo.

Gibbons' books are always excellent. Zoo brings alive a favorite place to visit in a very unique way.

Check it out! A great book about libraries.
Check it out! The Book About Libraries is a wonderful introduction to the library. Children are introduced to the history of books as well as the many uses of a library. Through reading the book children will also learn how to check out a book and the importance of returning a book on time and in good condition. This is a great tool to use before taking any child to the library.

Still a good book about libraries after all these years!
Although "Check It Out!" was published in 1985, it is still a relevant resource for primary grade students. Whenever I read this aloud to first or second grade classes in our elementary school library, I'm impressed by how much information is contained in this simple picture book. It serves as an excellent discussion starter, covering everything from the history of writing on clay tablets, to checking out books with a "signature", to comparing the size of our library to the Library of Congress.

Although our library hasn't used a card catalog for almost ten years, we still have the cabinet we can point to and compare the old system with our online catalog.

After reading this to a first grade class recently, one student picked up on the sentence: "Sometimes people donate books to the library." He came in the next day with a grocery sack filled with books he wanted to donate (and they were all in good condition!).

While a few things are a bit dated, Gail Gibbons has done an excellent job of covering most of the services that are still offered by public and school libraries many years after the book was written. The text is written at about a 3rd grade level, but I prefer to read it aloud and answer the many questions that kids come up with.
