An elementary teacher's thoughts on a great nonfiction book
"Dogs" is a great informational book for kids in the primary grade levels. All kids have background knowledge on this topic and Ms. Gibbons presents her content in an easily understandable way. This would be a great book to use to start to teach kids about how/when to read "quick text" (brief text that accompanies pictures) and labels. There are a variety of breeds in "Dogs" that kids will be familiar with, and reading this book may spark interest in wanting to read more nonfiction about animals. By the way, in the Copyright 1996 edition, the word "Dalmatian" is not misspelled.

Response Vehicles.
This short, yet informative book discusses the various vehicles that emergency services use. Services ranging from the police to the fire department to ambulance services to the Coast Guard are discussed. The book illustrates in action the various vehicles these emergency services use: everything from cars, trucks, boats, helicopters, and even planes. The book is written in a simple manner, yet in such a way that young children become more informed and better understand the jobs of those who serve and protect. The last few pages of the book contains a short history of fire, police, and ambulance vehicles of the past.

Great Introduction to the Deep Ocean
I am somewhat familiar with deep ocean exploration and this book does a great job of describing the experience. I like that the text is simple so that a young reader can enjoy it alone but it also has scientific names of deep sea features and creatures for older readers and this makes it a nice resource book as well.
Quite accurate depiction of the seagoing experience.
The terminology is very accurate as are the pictures.
I read this book several times before I gave it as a gift for a young child.

Picture Perfect!
In Gail Gibbons book, The Great St. Lawrence Seaway, Gibbons not only shows and tells children about the system of locks and canals on the St Lawrence River, she also weaves the history behind the seaway into her nonfictional account. This step by step process of the build up of the Seaway and how it functions is clearly and easily understood by young children. Students in the classroom also note that her illustrations convey the build up of towns and people along the banks of the St. Lawrence as more and more ships were able to pass along the waterway!
