Not for Children
We don't need to see the Little Mermaid's nipples.
(I can never understand why the people who cry out that the nudity is "JUST art!" don't notice that it is never underdressed males, but little girls that we have to look at.)

Amazon.com rates this book for ages 4 - 8, but the text is difficult and violent, and the admittedly lovely art is appropriate for graphic novels in the _Sandman_ vein, not for kids.

Yes, it is a lovely story, yes, it was dark to begin with, and no it is not a children's book.

Good translation, pretty (aside from the gratuitousness) illustrations earn 2 stars.

Most reviews here are NOT about this book!
Sulamith Wulfing's art is gorgeous! Unfortunately, most of the reviews I see here are NOT for her book! They are reviews of the version Rachel Isadora illustrated (see the "nipples" and violence comments); or even for Disney's Little Golden Book adapted from the cartoon. I don't understand why reviews for other versions are displayed here; it's very misleading! If you like Sulamith Wulfing's art, you'll probably like this book.

The best rendering of this story I have ever seen
The Little Mermaid. Illustrated by Sulamith Wulfing; text by Hans Christian Andersen. Translated from the German by Petra Michel.

Sulamith Wulfing is a fantastic artist whose work has been sold as books of plates, calendars, and even decks of cards. This book is special because it is one of the few times that her works illustrate a story. Each page has black and white line drawings and there are ten full page color plates. The color plates are the type of work for which the artist is most known and the ten in this book have been reprinted in her calendars and other collected works. The color is vibrant and the themes of each are sublime. The cover illustration is also the last illustration in the text and shows the mermaid transformed into The Immortal Soul.

An epilog called "The Sacrifice" written by the artist's son, Otto Schulze, states that a new translation of Andersen's story was used and that "parts of the story have been summarized." While staying true to Andersen's original plot, incidents and characters have been left out and parts of the story have been changed. These changes raise the story above being a children's fairy tale and highlight its allegorical theme about the role of love in the quest for immortality. The modified text and the mystical art go together excellently to make this the best rendering of this story I have ever seen. Originally published in German in 1953, this work is as vibrant today as when it was first conceived 50 years ago.

At the end of the book is a brief one page biography of the author with an early photograph of her and a self portrait painted in 1953.

One of only two good lottery books
There are probably only two really useful and accurate books on how to play the lottery.Ê The first is Ziemba, W. T. (1986) ,Dr.Ê Z's 6/49 Lotto Guidebook, and the second is this nice little volume.Ê

The authorsÕ focus is on winning the greatest possible amount if your numbers are selected.Ê The book is based on the important idea that, while there is no way to increase your chances of winning, Êthere are plays which will increase or decrease the expected payoff in the unlikely event that you do win. Ê

If you pick numbers the same way other people do, then you will have to share your winningsÑsomething that could be very disappointing indeed. That is why, with the exception of this book and Dr. Z's book, the most popular lottery books will hurt you the most.

Nice book
Henze and Riedwyl's book on the lottery is very interesting in that it gives a honest mathematical and statistical view of the lottery. Unlike the vast majority of [other] books about lotteries, Henze and Riedwyl know mathematics, statistics, and probability theory. They make no claims that you will win (because you won't), but if you like recreational mathematics, it's an enjoyable book.

lotteryrev
If you want to stay away from lingering lottery myths
and learn the truth and nothing but the truth on how to play lottery, this book is most valuable source of information. Based on the analysis of many millions of played combinations in many countries, it singles out the foolish styles of play that the typical lottery player follows. I found it especially interesting to see that playing foolishly means having to share the jackpot with thousands of other winners. Compared to most other books on the lottery, this book is completely honest. It is the definite lottery book for smart lotto players!

Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf!
Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf was an all right book! It was about how trees are planted, which leafs belong to which trees, and also how workers come and pick up tree sprouts to get transplanted and they tend them year after year then once the trees start to settle in they get measured, marked, and then uprooted again the workers load the tree up and take it to a place where people can go and buy it and re-plant it in their yard and that's what the kid in the story did! I don't think kids would really enjoy this book because it was pretty boring in my opinion but also very educational to the point kids would learn many things from this book!

Hiccups for Elephant
I think that this book is a great learn how to read and easy reader book. It blends laughs and learning. My sister read it to me and she loved it. She kept reading it for the next few nights. She thought it was very funny and I think she learned a lot of reading skills from this book. After the few days she complained it was too short, so I think that it would of been better if it was a little longer but still easy. I did think it was kind of short when my sister read it, but other than that i think that this is a great buy if you have kids learning to read. If you have a kid that's beginning to read i think that this book would be a great buy for you.

Great for learning readers
Hiccups for Elephant is a great book for beginning readers because it's short, funny for the young'ens, and the letters are big and easy to see. This book is about a groups of animals trying to take a nap, but one has hiccups, the elephant. The animals wake up one at a time to try and help the elephant fall asleep. I strongly recommend this book for parents that are trying to get their kids to learn how to read. FORGET hooked-on-phonics. Why waste money on cheap carp when you can spend 3 bucks on this or less. Plasticity for Structural Engineers
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (1988)
Authors: D.J. Han and Wai-Fah Chen
Amazon base price: $59.00
Average review score:

Plasticity
For those who want to study hard the beyond-elastic-limit behavior of the materials, this book is a good choice. After an introduction to tensorial mathematics and Einstein's indicial notation, the plastic models are presented to the reader. On its first part, it is presented a general theory of plasticity for any kind of materials as metals, rocks, soils and concretes. Several examples of practical applications are given. On the second part, the study is concerned on metal plasticity and a numerical finite element approach is presented. The theory presented in this book is very complete and deeply explained, but the language in many parts is bit confuse, which makes the study more difficult. If you are looking for an introductory reading, it could be a good idea to try "Continuum Theory of Plasticity", by Akhtar S. Khan. This other one has a simpler language and more usual mathematical notation.

a fine plasticity book
This book is one of the best plasticity books that I have read. It is pretty clear and has a lot of illuminating illustrations. It also has a good number of worked out examples to the point.

Where civil engineers meet statisticians...
This book gives a very nice collection of 4 case studies on Engineering Probabilistic Design and Maintenance for Flood Protection. Each case study is reviewed in detail from an engineering point of view, a mathematical point of view, and a problem's owner point of view. Each author of the case study has added a reply to the reviews. The book will be appreciated by civil engineers who deal with flood protection issues and mathematicians who are interested in applying their probabilistic models in practice.

Laboratory Manual for the Examination of Water, Waste Water and Soil, 2.rE
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (1992)
Authors: H. Krist and Hans Hermann Rump
Amazon base price: $89.95
Average review score:

A very good handbook
This manual offers a very good basis not only for experts of water chemistry, water and waste water treatment and environmental protection but also for teachers and students of technical directions at colleges as well as at universities.

225 pages contain all factors playing an important role for examination of water, waste water and soil. 9 chapters include general remarks to laboratory safety (also regarding to waste treatment) and quality control. Furthermore requirements for analytical methods of the different water types and soil are mentioned. Further chapters deal with the preparation and technique of the sampling as well as their application in practice.

Chapter "Laboratory Measurements" describes all important methods in detail. So this book is a perfect handbook for the target group, even without using the attached extensive reference list.

In chapter 7 a huge variety of tables containing especially German legal and technical regulations is an clearly help for interpretation of received results.

This book can be highly recommended as a handbook for everybody dealing with water, waste water and soil treatment.

Method and Context As Problems for Contemporary Theology: Doing Theology in an Alien World (Toronto Studies in Theology, Vol 58)
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (1991)
Author: Hans Schwarz
Amazon base price: $89.95
Average review score:

An aid to Theological Relevance
An intriguing and thoughtful monograph, which delineates five key elements that one must consider when constructing a theology to assure that the resulting theological expression is both relevant, non-relativistic, yet dialogical or admittedly a theology that is "on the way."
Schwarz cites five "contexts" in which theology must be constructed and he refers to these as "referents." The five referents are the 1)comsic, 2)historical, 3)textual, 4)cultic, and 5)Christ. Admitting that these are only a few of the situations that theology must address, given the "alien" context of this world toward God, these five are the most critical.
The Cosmic context refers to the way in which theology accounts for God's concrete presence and realization of salvation in this world. The historical context refers to how theology affirms that God is the author of history while allowing humanity the responsibility to work out the "details of history." The textual context addresses the way theology speaks of the authority and relevance of the biblical text. The cultic context demands that all theology be the task of the church with the community in mind. The Christ context requires that ecclesial unity find its origin in Christ alone.
These referents are helpful for developing a sound theological method. While the content of the book is thoughtful, there is an obvious thrust for eccumenical unity. The section on religious pluralism is also disconcerting, because Schwarz affirms the possibility of salvation apart from Christ, yet does not further explain his view. His language comes very close to a universal savation in Christ.
Other issues concern style and form. There are many typos; the passive voice is used carelessly throughout; and there is a section in the second chapter that is cut and pasted into the last chapter. It appears that he rushed this book off the presses. Overall, however, it is an excellent read.

An excellent reference to start your research from
This book is a very good reference for those who believe that scientific computing needs a little bit more of software engineering practice. It provides a collection of papers from the major researchers in this area, with interesting examples of real applications. It is not a text book for undergrads, but it provides good pointers to the main subjects, from where the reader can go by him/herself. I have been following HPC research for eight years and OOD for three, and this is for me the best reference in this subject so far.
