My colleagues call it RED book. This is the most comprehensive and practical book for engineers who are interested in optical methods for mechanics. This book covers various optical techniques and real life applications. It focuses on moiré techniques (theories, instrumentations, data analysis, and applications). It is simply the best book for one who likes to understand, utilize, and implement moiré techniques.

This is one of the best books made on military binoculars yet. It covers the early use of galilean field binoculars, and proceeds to Prismatic binoculars, covering both ordinary hand held, as well as large aperture fix-mounted binoculars. The author is german, and the book concentrates on german 20th century military optics. French, russian, UK and US binoculars are covered too, but not extensively. Pictures all have german AND english texts, and some parts of the book is written in english. Basic reference material is included, like German production codes, and some Zeiss serial numbers. I have had this book for two years now, and being a binocular collector, I can only recommend this as excellent!.

Now, that my own son has taken up geology (against my will!), I have tried to hunt down my own contributions: Mineral Deposits of the Alps (for which I co-authored one of the introductory articles) collects 39 articles written at a time, when geosciences was not anymore in the "Old" pre-"Kuhnian" stage of paradigmatic thinking, but still not yet totally "taken over" by plate tectonics. How refreshing, some 20 years on, to see how much original thinking went into geoscience prior to the advent of "gizmos" that quantify everything and replace original thoughts by "evidence" of numerical nature! Hope that Springer re-issues this slim and "racy" volume!

Highly spiritual and respectful of the reader, the text is grave without being pompous. Philosophy without a doubt,nevertheless extremely readable. I recommend it for anybody in search of the meanders of soul and mind, never one without the other.

The authors are experts in the law and the use of statistics in legal settings. This book gives an excellent overview of how statistics is applied in the courtroom. Many interesting and important cases are presented. Although not professional statisticians the authors have a good understanding of statistical methods. The book gives one of the best presentations of the importance of randomized controlled experiments that I have seen.

Von Balthasar is brilliant, and his writing style, even in translation, is eloquent and resourceful.

After Vatican II, many Catholics tried to interpret the Council by bringing foreign elements into the Church. This book sheds light upon those elements and still leaves room for the mystery of Grace to act unknowingly upon the reader.

This book represents the best general introduction to Management Science of which I am aware. It offers a basic introduction not only to the methods of quantitative decision aid but also to some major underpinning concepts of economic analysis, such as cost and benefit, dealing with uncertainty, time, multiple goals, and others.

Equally important, the book introduces these methods and concepts not in the usual eclectic fashion but within the framework of a systems approach to problem-solving and decision-making, a framework that draws not only on conventional "hard" (engineering-type) systems thinking but equally on contemporary "soft" (interpretive) systems thinking. Prof. Hans Daellenbach planned to integrate the recent development of systems thinking toward "critical" (reflective and discursive) systems thinking in a second edition of the book, which unfortunately (to my knowledge) has not met with the interest of the publisher.

The book can also be recommended from a didactic point of view. It is well written and argued and offers the serious student a lot of excellent examples and exercises.

If you want to gain a thorough basic understanding of the value of quantitative decision making approaches, you should buy this book as long as it is still available.

As the author of "Teachers Can Be Fired" I found that there was very little written for school administrators from the school administrators needs. Teacher evaluation is the key to improving our classroom delivery. All other improvements pale in the wind to a quality evaluation system. As a speaker who has gone around nationally on the topic, I can tell you there is much to be done.
