A cool mix
This is collection of short stories that offers a wide mix of speculative genres. Fantasy, SF, horror, and just plain weird. The stories run the gambit and most are good. "Jeo Defined" and "Moon Warrior" were excellent stories and well worth purchasing the book. Even just the so-so stories were enjoyable and all the authors are names to keep a look out for. In the end, this is a book of up and coming writers and a few of them will no doubt be big names someday.

A Great Read
I didn't know what to expect from this collection of short stories but I was happily surprised. The stories cover a wide range from fantasy, science fiction, and horror to those hard to classify strange stories. Each one is worth reading. My favorites were the one about a radio personality who was singing the Siren's song and the one about a criminal who is forced to undergo "augmentation" to control him. Some wild stuff for a great read.

Lets Get Real about this Biography
I give 2 stars because Miller is uncritical and his premise is excellent, looking at Foucault's life as a Nietzean exercise, but his execution of it is rather clunky. 1)His interpretation is overdetermined. Reading this biography flattens Foucault's works into being about the same thing. Foucault, in Miller's hands, appear to never have had shifts in his thinking. 2)Reader beware! Miller quotes Foucault out of context. One will always have to compare Miller's quotes against the original. 3) He overpersonalizes the philospher failing to provide a context of which Foucault's ideas had arisen. If you want a well-balanced biography try David Macey. Macey respects the reader's intelligence, he allows us to decide for ourselves unlike, Miller who imposes his interpretation on us.

Passionate Truth?
This book, based on the "philosophical life" of the late French philosopher Michel Foucault, reveals the mind of a man who was, says Miller, "one of the most original---and daring---thinkers of the century." Far from being just another biography of Foucault's life, Miller's thoroughly researched project demonstrates time and again the intimate interconnection between the way a life is lived and the thinking and writing that can come from that life. But this is much more than just an intellectual history. One Can't help but share in the passion that speaks through Miller's writing, powerfully earning this book its title.

Foucault said, "...there is not a book I have written that does not grow, at least in part, out of a direct, personal experience." Each chapter of Miller's book gradually unfolds the truth of this statement, beginning with Foucault's earliest writings on madness and mental illness, through his works on knowledge and criminality, to his final opus on the nature of human sexuality. Foucault's unorthodox approach to history is made clear, revealing a revolutionary philosophy based not on structured logic and reason, but growing instead from the realm of experience, in keeping with the "great Nietzschean quest [to] become what one is."

I personally found this book quite disturbing, still accepting as I do many principles of existential humanism, especially those of free will and personal responsibility. But humanism as a whole is a philosphy Foucault and his contemporaries emphatically reject as "a diminution of man," made up of "everything in Western civilization that restricts the desire for power" and "every attitude that considers the aim of politics to be the production of happiness." In reality, says Foucault, happiness does not exist---and the happiness of man exists still less."

"The individual," he is reported to have said, "is contingent, formed by the weight of moral tradition, not really autonomous." And we "can and must make of man a negative experience, lived in the form of hate and aggression."

Somewhat stunned, I've nevertheless gained from Miller's book a new understanding of the world I live in, and of myself as part of that world. "Under the impact of civilization," he summarizes, "the will to power (Freud's 'death instinct') has been driven inward and turned against itself---creating within the human being a new inclination: to destroy himself." So, if Foucault is right, the basic truth that society tries to make humans homogenously "tame" is itself the very root of the violence and decadence of our times. If we are to point to the cause of these problems, we can only point at ourselves and at our structured ways of thinking. The problem is not what we have allowed to be, but rather what we have tried to deny and eliminate. "I am referring," says Foucault, "to all those experiences that have been rejected by our civilization, or which it accepts only within literature." This view throws the current move toward increased artistic censorship into new and unexpected relief.

For Foucault, then, the issue is the same, whatever the subject at hand: the concept of madness, our systems of language and knowledge, law and the punishment of crime, or the idea and expression of our individual sexuality. Regardless of our lifestyle, history has told us the limits of what we can be, and as individuals and as a culture we are paying a great price for believeing it. According to Foucault, the solution can only be to "free ourselves from...cultural conservatism, as well as from political conservatism. We must see our rituals for what they are: completely arbitrary things." We must find the "limits" of our thinking and learn to transcend them. Says Foucault, "...the unity of society [is] precisely that which should...be destroyed."

Miller's book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Was it all a dream?
I assume Miller is trying to demystify Foucault from the deifying result of the author function surrounding his subject. Despite Foucault's writing about it and his advocacy of a nameless or faceless book, I am aware that Foucault was aware of his author function. Books like "The Passion Michel Foucault" by Miller as well as works by Eribon and Macey serve the same function to perpetuate Foucault's own author function.

I am not convinced either that Foucault's es muss sein can be essentialized as a Nietzschean project per se. Foucault is the great synthesizer. Rather than build on his academic successes, Miller pokes around looking for dirt on Foucault using the same technique that proved successful for Foucault - the archives. Read all three biographies to get an idea of his work but make sure to read his TEXT to get an idea of his thought.

four average stories, but one's a keeper...
Five authors contribute to this volume. I bought it intitally because I knew Jayne Anne Krentz, but her chapter is one of the weakest. Indeed, four of the five stories are pretty average, and definitely not keepers - but the fifth one...

Linda Howard's Lake of Dreams is a haunting, romantic, sexual tale which is definitely worth tracking down. I read the other stories once only, but I've reread Lake of Dreams many times and it is definitely a keeper... So buy all five, but you'll keep it for the one.

Like L. Howard's story? Try Remembrance by Jude Deveraux
I purchased Everlasting Love after reading customer reviews praising Linda Howard's story, Lake of Dreams. Reading it reminded me of Remembrance (1994) by Jude Deveraux. It is a full length novel about soul mates struggling to "get it right this time". Remembrance is both poignant and unforgettable. I highly recommend it!

Now I want to go to a lake......
The stories in this book are all good. It was my first taste of Linda Howard, Kasey Michaels and Carla Neggers. I especially enjoyed Linda Howard's Lake of Dreams. I have since become a huge fan! Each of the stories is quite different and offers a different style of writing. What a great way to spend the day.....

The Elements of Pilates and The Michael Miller View

overpriced
undoubtedly mr. miller knows his pilates. however, this is a self-published, overpriced transcription of lectures and journal entries, rife with "inaudibles" and "unintelligible questions". for seekers of in depth information on the pilates method, i suspect it would be more satisfying to refer to joseph pilates' original works, or that of alan menezes.

The Elements of Pilates and the Michael Miller View
This is the only Pilate book I read and refer to over and over, and every time I pick up something new. It will empower and inspire you! No other book approaches Pilates as a concept that makes sense. There is a reason for the order of the exercises. It matters, just as timing, flow, and listening to your breath all matter, and he explains it so well. I am sure your Pilates will improve along with your results. I know my improvement was dramatic and perceptible immediately. Personally, I loved the journal and the exerpts from workshops. And the author's view is a great contribution to the field. When I finished the book I said,"Ah! So this is Pilates"! You will, too. I give this book 2 thumbs up (or 3 if I had a third one).

The Elements of Pilates and The Michael Miller View
I have purchased just about every book there is on Pilates. The Elements and Michael Miller View takes the "Platinum Award" for Passion, knowledge, and experience about Pilates. Michael Miller's Book will definitely entice the reader with his enthusiasm for defining what Pilates is and he is right on track with what Joseph Pilates believed in and taught, body, mind, and spirit.

My favorite sections were the exerpts from the workshops he held and the Hermits Journal. Having the opportunity to be around several recognized Master Pilates Teachers I definitely believe this book has so much to offer all Pilates enthusiast; whether beginner or an experiencedteacher. I strongly recommend this book. It is not just about Pilates, but some valuable lessons about life. Happy Reading.

Not worth the paper it's printed on
I hate giving bad reviews, but I love telling the truth. This book is full of techniques that any practicing Occultist will have mastered long ago. It's nothing new or interesting, nor anything particularly innovative. The only use I can find for this book is as a self-teaching tool for those with no experience in energy working. If you've worked energy succesfully before, just skip over this one and go for a more useful book.

Best book on the subject
I have read quite a few books on psychic skills and energy work but this is by far the best book on the subject. If you are interested in learning how to develop and control the energy that resides in all of us, this book will help. It includes basic exercises to help you feel and control this energy. It gets an A+ in my book.

Absolutely essential to energy work.
I have never found any guide to energy work as practical, easy to understand and use as this one. Step by step exercises and inhanced photography will impress even the most skeptical readers. I've found it an invaluable teaching resource.

A Worthwhile Project
I am sorry, but if someone needs to read a book in order to navigate a website, they do not belong on the internet. Kudos to Mr. Miller (no relation) for coming up with something for the truly needy.

Best book EVER!
I just finished this book and I've got to say that it provided the best ten minutes worth of reading I've ever experienced! Before reading this I thought 'Curious George Flies a Kite' was never going to be surpassed. Still, this book would be alot better if my Auntie read it to me while I ate banana bread.

Learn how to satisfy your urge to bargain
The fact that ...e-Bay, one of the few other successful e-businesses does as well. ...e-Bay satisfies the fundamental human desire to bargain and make money. It is ironic to think that although the Internet was considered to be the ultimate in niche market opportunities, it has been those two general human characteristics that have driven the most successful e-businesses.
If you have been feeling the desire to gratify your urge to buy and sell, but have been hesitant to do so out of ignorance, then this book is for you. In plain, clear, extremely non-technical language, Miller explains what e-Bay is, how to get started and if all goes well, how to ramp up to being a major player. The only prerequisite is a fundamental knowledge of the world wide web and how to surf from site to site. This includes the basics of filling out and submitting forms.
Miller is also honest about some of the optional features offered by e-Bay. Additional options such as extra and longer listings are quite properly considered a waste of money. He is also blunt in stating that about 50% of all the items listed on e-Bay are not sold. This is very sound advice, as it is easy to get caught up in sales and by not understanding the value of the features, end up selling your items at a loss.
e-Bay as an organization is right in considering the e-Bay service to be a community, the largest and most varied shopping bazaar in the world. Everyone with a desire to do so can join, and this book will show you how.

Idiots No More
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Microsoft Works Suite 2000 is a great way for a beginner to stop feeling like an Idiot. Jargon is explained in the text as it comes up instead of hiding away back in a glossary like some computer books. Instructions are clear and step by step. The book is designed to be hands-on so that you can actually accomplish something on the computer as you go. There are tips and sidebar boxes that explain what to do and how to stay out of trouble. The chapter layout is set up so that someone could choose to go through the book step by step or just look up and do the thing they want to do at the moment. If you are really sensitive about the title, cover the book with a brown paper bag and use it anyway. This is an excellent reference for any beginner.

Very informative, very wordy
Bought this book for reference for some software i was writing. The book is very thorough and covers anything and everything you need to know about LAN technologies. Starts out very general and explains the history of networking and the standards that support it. Goes in depth with LAN technology and then continues to give an overview of upper level protocols and even cabling.

I suppose my only critique is that the book tends to be a little verbose as the authors frequently use convoluted sentence structures which slow down the reading.

Overall a very useful book.
