Hyde and go seek
Frank Polite"s _Hyde_ is a complex longpoem in a stanzaic form called panthera -- which he claims is Turkish, but which may be his own tongue-in-cheek invention. Like the cat for which the verse form is named, the poem/story prowls and pounces through many countries as it hunts down Hyde, the assassin/bodyguard hero, and MiLady, the gorgeous heroine. Villains, Malador (get it?) and Fatoush are repeatedly foiled by quick-witted Hyde.

Like Polite's previous work, this is a lot of fun. It tricks and traps like a panther, and Hydes many clever word plays in its narrative.

Of Poles and Zeros
This is an excellent introduction to modern seismic measurement systems. Basically all what you need to know is covered here. Starting from functioning of seismometer, analog-to-digital techniques and digital filtering. All from the point of view of seismological interests, i.e. everything is all the time nicely linked with seismological practices which other "signal and systems" books obviously lack. Also the CD included is very educative when learning what poles and zeros actually mean.

Pictures could be a bit better from time to time. It seems that straight window-captures have been used when some further image processing would have been required.

Nevertheless, this is a must for any seismologist dealing with measuring systems.

The short story is alive and very well
"Because Nickerson hit a dog, he lost a hubcap." That is the opening line of "Nickerson's Luck," the first story in this collection of poignant stories by Alaska resident Frank Soos. Soos held me captive right from the start with that first line. With sharp, funny language he evokes the way in which we're all connected by fate and events beyond our control. In the collection's title piece, a character believes airplanes are held up in the sky by people on the ground who watch them with "acts of collective concentration." Soos has an evident love for his characters which shines through in the language on every page. In the past, he's stated that Alice Munro is the author he admires the most. There are echoes of the Candian short story writer throughout "Unified Field Theory." I enjoyed Soos' first collection, "Early Yet," but this latest book shows a definite maturation on his part. I can't wait for the next Soos to hit the shelves!

Simplicity
I am going to college right now, trying to learn about what I am going to be doing for the rest of my life. I don't have time to learn a whole new subject, and that's what I like about this book. It tells me what I need to eat and I eat it. Simple.

Okay Book, Totally Misleading Title
I was really disappointed upon receiving this book, because it just does not deliver what the title promises, e.g. "definitive programs for runners of all ages and levels". And that promise is the only reason I bought it: like so many intermediate runners, I don't have a personal trainer and have lots of questions about my training routine. In the beginning, you just run; but after a year or so, you start wondering: am I training enough, what's the best combination of workouts (slow/fast; long/short etc.)in a given week, what types of workouts that make sense are there... So you can imagine how happy I was when I discovered a book with this title. But there is NOTHING in here to answer that type of question. It's a well-written how-to book, mainly for beginners with lots of injury tips and motivational stuff - but hey, that's in EVERY running book. So I guess it's okay - if you don't have the wrong expectations.

Excellent book. Especially the pages for masters runners.
Since, like the author, I am a runner over the age of 50, I felt this book really provided valuable information on training. I especially liked the discussion on weight training. Bill encourages a moderate approach to lifting, which I agree is better than the more intensive weight training that seems to be the norm these days. I highly recommend this book to runners of all levels.

Police Field Operations
Too vague and general for someone using the book to use as a reference. Does not go into a lot of key points you actually use on patrol. Also, tends to make remarks that do not reflect the reality of todays police work. The author seems out of touch with policing today.

Very basic, good book
I had to read this book for a promotional examination and found it to be a good refresher of the very basic points that we all learned at the beginning of our police careers. When I am approached by someone who is not yet in police work and wants to read a good, simply written and understandable book on law enforcement, I always recommend this one. It may seem to be too basic for those of us in this field for the years I have served, but many areas are still very relevant.

An Ok Read If You Set Aside The Writers Whine
The tiny vinettes that make up the book are truly worth the read, but to get past the authors continued psychological issues is extreamly difficult.

When she finds out who she is - let me know, she will have something worth reading.

CONSTITUTIONALISM IN A CULTURALY EMPERIALISTIC STATE
Norma Fields eloquently provides a historical look at post World War II Japan. She utilizes personal memories as well as interviews with private and public citizens that recount their struggles as Japanese. Japanese life is one filled with contradiction. After Japan's surrender in August of 1945 they adopted an Americanized Constitution to symbolize to the world their commitment to peace. This Constitution has been at times nothing more than that, a symbol, because despite efforts to mimic the American guarantees of personal freedom and liberties, the Japanese traditions and cultural practes of Emperialism and Shinto overshadow these Constitutional gurantees, leaving citizens wondering where Japan's future lies. Norm Field puts faith in the Japanese people, that they as the people in her book have, will take the high road in Japan and except their past for all its good and bad and move bravely into the future.

Pulls back the curtain
Uncovers many of the hidden parts of Japan with interesting and thought-provoking stories. Anyone interested in the culture of Japan should give this book a good reading.

somewhat disappointing
this was the first weather almanac i bought since 1978. while the stats are indeed current (up to year 1999) the historical data for most U.S. cities is not reflective of the past, and seems to only track data recorded with a station's new weather equipment, circa 1990s... also, the book itself is largely copied grids from earlier versions of the almanac, difficult to read in some cases. wind data in most cities is not reflected in historical trends.
USA today puts out a graphically pleasing almanac, but the data in their book too is not of super value to the true climatologist. with the vast number of reporting data available today, i would expect a book such as this to include many more cities, and address microclimates. the web itself offers better statistical data than this book; although keeping track of that data ourselves can be cumbersome.
