The Freshwater Fishes of North Carolina
Published in Hardcover by Edward F. Menhinick (1991)
Authors: Edward F. Menhinick and Jo E. Trecartin-Copeland
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Technical and comprehensive
This text is basically a large and detailed taxonomic key of freshwater fishes found in North Carolina. The book details taxonomic differences, similarities, and distribution ranges of species, grouped by family. Greytone pictures of the fish are provided along with a statewide distribution map. Not much in the way of sampling methods or general descriptions of habitat preference. This book is for people very interested in taxonomy. Overall, a very comprehensive text.

A wide array of fabulous raw poetry
A "Geo. of Poets" was a stimulating experience to read, and flipping through and reading randomly I devoured the entire book, finding obscure but worthwhile poetry.

Hyde and go seek
Frank Polite"s _Hyde_ is a complex longpoem in a stanzaic form called panthera -- which he claims is Turkish, but which may be his own tongue-in-cheek invention. Like the cat for which the verse form is named, the poem/story prowls and pounces through many countries as it hunts down Hyde, the assassin/bodyguard hero, and MiLady, the gorgeous heroine. Villains, Malador (get it?) and Fatoush are repeatedly foiled by quick-witted Hyde.

Like Polite's previous work, this is a lot of fun. It tricks and traps like a panther, and Hydes many clever word plays in its narrative.

watching nature carefully with great amusement
Gilbert White lived the quietest life, but he succeeded in gaining the attention of all the prominent naturalists of the 18th century. His only book was the result of years of observations of his gardens and surrounding countryside of southern England. Written in the form of letters to interested fellow naturalists, White comments on birds, geology, insects, and even a visit to a North American moose that has been imported by a neighbor. As a writer, Gilbert White is astute in combining his observations with a charming delight in everything he sees that makes the reader want to follow him wherever he goes.

Realms of Beauty may become history
Edward Fritz's REALMS OF BEAUTY, along with the photography of Jess Alford, may give us our last full glimpse of the five natural wilderness areas of Texas before massive dams and federal policies allowing timber cutting in federal forests wipe out the beauty and diversity the book documents. Better yet, details in accessing the areas, what to take, and what to look for-- add to the value for first time Texas Wilderness Walkers. Though "Ned" Fritz has spent a lifetime as a constant defender of public forest areas, this book sticks to a non-political understanding of the unique ecosystems and seasonal changes in the wilderness areas as well as a geological timeline that shows the buildup of the Texas forests over millions of years. As you read each section of the book, there's no doubt that the writer has been there himself and is sharing what you need to know before trying a wilderness hike on your own when cool weather comes!

An excellent introduction to Edward Abbey's work
After reading this collection, which serves as a retrospective of the writin career of one of the better SW writers, I was left with a feeling that the selection could have been better, but this probably reflects my own eclectic readings of his work. Abbey's writings always seemed uneven, particularly in his fiction. His comments about the role of the independent writer versus that of the commercial hired of the establishment press seems right on. In spite of his many years of part-time non-writing service to various agencies he still managed to maintain his freedom to say what he wished about the rot he saw in the management of public lands. I suspect that he was always a bit shocked about how cheaply managers of public linds could be bought off. As a review of his lifetime of writing the book is excellent. McCrae includes some of his fiction, both the excellent ("The Brave Cowboy") and only fair (The Monkey Wrench Gang"). The sampling from his writings might be occasionally dated, but are still mostly relevant to the problems of the SW. His polemic about the cowboy ("Free Speech - The cowboy ans his cow") clearly points to the problems of allowing anything like an unrestricted use of and romanticism about what can easily become an extractive industry. At the same time Abbey's followers should have a difficult time justapositionng his sense of anarchy with this complaints about the institutional anarchy of commercial capitalism. To finish. A good read and certainly worthwhile for someone new to Abbey's work while being a fair sample of his writings for a person with only a passing acquaintance with the writings of one of the West's best essayist. The closing comments in Wendell Berry's poem about his friend are most appropriate.

Track & Field Coach's Survival Guide: Practical Techniques and Materials for Building an Effective Program and Success in Every Event

Disappointing
Although this book has some helpful information, overall I do not feel that it is ideal for a typical high school track program (in Iowa). There is only information on 300m hurdles, not run in Iowa; we run the 400m hurdles in high school. Also the majority of high schools here do not begin track until February or March, and the training schedule in the book is for a much longer season and seems to be geared more for the college level.

Ok, But!
I found this book to be a valuable resource. I don't like that coach Wallace offers for you to email him for additional info - and when you do, he doesn't reply. Take the offer out of the book then.

Indispensible Reference for New Coaches
There are wonderful gems of wisdom in this coaching manual. I adapted the information in it to start up a grammar school track and field program and we were highly successful in our first season! Coach Wallace gives you the benefits of his 30+ years coaching and it greatly reduced the learning curve for me. This is especially useful for coaches starting up programs on a "shoestring" budget with less-than-optimal facilities. I would highly recommend it to any track and field coach.

Quick! But accurate?
This book travels well and with the index dog-eared makes for quick and dirty referencing (espeically of Fam Graminae).
But I found a few of the plates, although well illustrated, confusing (i.e. determining the key number associated with the image of a particular flowering head). If you are looking for a thorough reference for Genus Carex don't look here.

An Excellent Field Resource
For a small, compact field guide it holds a wealth of information including a dichotomous like key for easy identification. Common names as well as scientific names are provided with good illustrations. For anyone serious about field work or just someone interested in plants this book is a good resource.
