Great Book, dynamite Research
The black wrap-around jackets with bloused trousers worn by Germany's Panzer troops were perhaps the most engaging and attractive uniforms of World War II. Field Uniforms of German Panzer Forces in World War 2 covers all the field uniforms, insignia, and headgear worn by the German Army Panzer forces from 1934-1945 in one massive volume. Each armor-related branch of the service is described with details about uniforms and insignia within these units. The book features both period photographs and color images of uniforms in private collections.

The authors have divided the book into thirteen chapters representing twelve different branches of armor in the Wehrmacht. Each chapter begins with an overview of the particular group of Panzer troops, followed by a detailed account of their uniforms, branch colors, and specialized insignia.

In addition to extensive, fully documented research, the authors have selected a combination of more than 300 studio portraits, in-the-field images, and death cards to trace the evolution of the various uniforms of the Panzer troops in WWII. Great images run the gamut from beret-wearing troops astride Panzerkamfwagen IIIs to coverall-wearing soldiers of the Eisenbanpanzerzuegen (armored rail cars). If you even have a passing interest in Germany's armored forces, this book will provide an intimate view.

Excellent reference tool
Those who purchased Pruett and Edwards' "Field Uniforms of German Army Panzer Forces in WWII" will be familiar with the comprehensive nature of this title. In this volume, they cover the "everything else" uniforms of the German armed forces such as the Waffen SS, Afrika Korps and Hermann Goring formations. A wealth of contemporary photographs is supplemented by a color section that features uniforms and insignia owned by collectors. The authors include information that allows one to accurately date the appearance of a particular uniform or feature, and this is backed up by footnoted references. This book is an excellent reference tool for memorabilia collectors, figure painters and anyone who is interested in German uniforms of the Second World War.

exciting, fact filled book
Informative book on the tradgedies of FIRE. This book is interesting in that it touches on many different fires from our past and gives important information on each, without being boring. Great pictures and lots of details of who, what, where and when.

This book is written in such a way that you can pick it up at any time and spend as much time as you have, and still feel like you have learned something and been part of it.

An inclusive reference, very well done
This is a quite inclusive book of Chesapeake Bay fish. Many Atlantic species that stray into the mouth of the Bay are also included. Excellent scientific drawings, many color plates, good concise text. It is geared towards reference (not a Sunday read). Very well done.

Great for beginners!
I am a beginning bird watcher. This common sense, straight- forward book contained exactly the information I needed to get started. It is not a field guide, but a simple plan for taking up a delightful pastime. The regional check lists in the back of the book are excellent. I highly recommend Getting Started in Birdwatching to anyone who wishes to start this hobby but doesn't want to be overwhelmed with too much complex information. A great resource!

Read a beautifully written book about a devastating process.
R. Edward Grumbine is a storyteller. Above is a book that discusses the current crisis regarding the environment, how we got there, and where we are headed. Swirled together are stories of natural (and personal) discoveries with political and scientific explanations. His ability to cover these ranges of interest only make the reality of this subject even more shocking. This is as much poetry as it is a textbook. It is a wake up call, and a call to arms. I highly recommend this book for those who choose the wonder and beauty of the wilderness, and for those who are afraid of a world without it.

The High Frontier: Exploring the Tropical Rainforest Canopy
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (1994)
Authors: Mark W. Moffett and Edward Osborne Wilson
Amazon base price: $24.95

solid science, unforgettable images
This is a great popular science book, written by an adventurer/explorer who also has a Harvard PhD in biology. He travels all over the world for National Geographic, taking nature photos as well as reporting on cutting-edge discoveries in the rainforests. As such, he succeeds at mixing art and science in this book, which is somewhat technical, but explained in clear language that laymen can understand. THis book changed the way I saw rainforests: fully 9/10s of their biota are in the canopy, in the leaves high above, which you would never from the ground. And Moffet went up there with camera to photograph it with some of the world's best scientists. The result is masterful.

It is truly a pity that this book is out of print. I wrote a review of it for the Boston Globe when it came out and later met the author, Moffet. He was as interesting and colorful as the book, full of hilarious stories of his adventures.
