The Best of Jim Corbett
If (like me)you've read about the adventures of Jim Corbett in the works of Capstick or other writers and wanted to get a real taste of the man-eater hunter in his own words... then this book is an absolute MUST HAVE.

Corbett was the premier rogue cat exterminator in the first quarter of last century and highly regarded as the best ever. This collection contains his most challenging hunts including The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, The Chowgarh Tigers, and The Thak Man-eater. Corbett personally had over a dozen real life assignments against known man-killers and these stories are the best of the best. His targets were reportedly responsible for over 1500 human deaths and countless injuries. Given the remote locations and the fact that deaths resulting from infection, etc. were not counted, that total can probably be doubled or even tripled.

Corbett, in his writings, takes you right into the jungles of 1920s India and you'd be hard pressed to find a man more familiar with his environment. In reading these stories, you will find that Jim Corbett is not a man out for fame, trophies, or money. In fact, his respect and admiration for the great cats that he hunts goes without question. You find no hatred for these maneaters and in his first words discusses typical reasons these cats turn to human flesh. Its refreshing to see a man in his position with such an objective point of view.

At any rate, these tales are the stuff of legend and should be savored by any person interested in hunting, adventure, or the true history of early 1900s India bush life. If you fall into any of these categories, you will love this collection. Guaranteed!

Tiger Hunter
This book was read nearly 15 years ago.It was one of the most exciting and unforgettable books I have come across and I am still searching for a copy. After reading some reviews of Jim Corbetts other books I am reminded of the same qualities of the man that come through in "Tiger Hunter". His humanity and regard for nature in the twenties was ahead of its time. I recall one part of his book where he uses his small dog held under his arm while walking through a bamboo thicket in search of a tiger, his rifle ready for use in the other arm.His dog would then indicate the position of the tiger by picking up its scent. This book may have been published under a different title in recent years. If any one recognises this perhaps they could let me know.

A must read
I have read and re-read and re-read Corbett's stories since I first discovered them as a boy 25 years ago.

The writing is clear, elegant and evocative, bringing to life a long-lost world. Most impressive, though, is Corbett's humility and humanity. He repeatedly put himself at risk to help others, but says very, very, very little about himself in his books.

The Unspoken Truth
Ray Wikstrom writes from his heart. He has the courage to write out against, what seems wrong and immoral to him. What most of us conform to, without even questioning why? Purpose! The Forgotten Principle examines everything from parenting to the military in a logical and objective way that will amke every American rethink their position on several topics. Though I didn't agree with Capt. Wikstrom on everything, he made me think critically about my positions. I truely recommend this book, for everyone, conservative and liberal, it doesn't matter, this book will make you question how America has declined so far without us knowing it!

Worth the read!!
Ray puts what most people believe in print. If you think the vocal minority have it wrong and family values have declined this is the book for you. Easy to read and stressing back to basics... PURPOSE! is right on.

Entertaining, informative, challenging, revelatory essays.
In Purpose!: The Forgotten Principle, Raymond Wikstrom sounds an overdue and much needed wake-up call to the necessity of elevating public political and social discourse to a new level of integrity as we proceed through a new century. Wikstrom's entertaining, informative, and challenging essays are declarative demands for moral leadership arises from his many years of experience as a leader of sailors and marines in and out of wartime. Purpose!: The Forgotten Principle takes on the vanities of the Conservative Right as embodied in the NRA, Oliver North, and Newt Gringrich, as well as the intellectual and philosophical failings and posturings of the Liberal Left.

THIS IS DEFINITELY AN INVALUABLE GUIDE
I so enjoy finding spiritual elements in films, and this book helps immensely in alerting one to points in many films that one might miss. I question the spiritual value in some of the films discussed, but that's all to the good. I use this guide weekly chaeck;ing out the movies on TV, as well as, like other reviewers, taking it with me to the video store or library where I often check out videos.

I believe that this book will do loads in enhancing your enjoyment of many films, and may change your mind about some which you consdidered valueless until spiritual elements are brought out.

At Long Last!!! A really rewarding guide to films
Reel Spirit is a terrific guide to film! Buy it quickly and pop a copy into the car--you'll want to have with you every time you visit the video store! A must have for anyone who enjoys films that lift both heart and spirit.

A Spiritual "Ahaaa!"
Reel Spirit recognizes spirituality and clarifies why so many movies appeal to so many of us the way they do. The insights are meaningful, and the writing is as engaging as an on-going dialog, conveying the delightful experience of going to the movies with a connoisseur who happens to be your best friend.

Satan, Cantor, and Infinity and Other Mind-boggling Puzzles
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (18 February, 1993)
Author: Raymond Smullyan
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Perhaps Smullyan's best
A highly enjoyable book of mathematical puzzles and ideas. Overall I think this is the best of the books by Smullyan I have seen, as the narrative (hardly a story, but a narrative of discussions which introduce and explain ideas) is very readable. Smullyan uses this technique in several other books but often one gets a sense that there is only a little narrative to connect much hard stuff - here the maths is interwoven into the narrative in a way that makes it much easier to follow (for example, the characters make various comments and objections which the central character, the Sorcerer, responds to as if engaged in an informal tutorial).

Satan, Cantor, and Infinity - a novel about set theory
Professor Smullyan's book Satan, Cantor, and Infinity, is an excellent mathematical novel, extremely readable for everybody from elementary schoolboys(girls) to first class college (university) students. The story concerns three major personalities - The Sorcerer living in the Knight-Knave Island and Princess Annabelle with her suitor. As in many books of professor Smullyan the first half of the story is devoted to various puzzles about knights (truth-tellers) and knaves (liars). The third chapter takes place on the island of robots. The puzzles of self-constructive and self-destructive robots throw light on problem of languages, which allow self-reference, and the famous Gödel's theorems. This chapter may be harder to catch and the reader is recommended to consult another professor Smullyan's book, Forever Undecided. In the rest of the book are introduced Zeno's paradoxes concerning the problem of continuity and change (with these paradoxes are discussed the most elementary ideas of infinitesimal calculus), envelope paradox (a kind of paradox of rationality), ant the set-theoretic paradoxes (Burry's paradox, Mannoury's paradox, Russell's paradox and Cantor's paradox). The basic ideas of set theory are introduced in the form of problems of a prisoner in the Hell - Satan gives the prisoner opportunity to save himself(herself) if he(she) puzzles out an integer which Satan wrote on the paper closed in an envelope. Story also introduces the famous Continuum problem - the set theoretic problem formulated by the founder of set theory Georg Cantor in the 19th century and unsolved to our times (or at least unsolved by the more modest set theoretic principles not using some hypotheses concerning large cardinals). The story concludes with a nice Zwicker's hypergame paradox and a legend about a gifted student of Cantor imprisoned in Hell, who outwits the Great Satan. The entire book is written in non-technical style and really is a MATHEMATICAL NOVEL, maybe a mathematical fairy tale, not a textbook. (I would only like to know if professor Smullyan is really going to fulfill his promise given in the book that he will try to present more calculus ideas in the future.) Well, the book is very delightful reading for these days - the Good defeats the Evil even in this story, even in the realm of mathematics!

The best logic puzzles you will find
Before you start reading this book, prepare to have your logic bone tweaked, tickled and annoyed. There is no one better than Raymond Smullyan at creating logic puzzles that will intrigue, infuriate and stretch your mind to slightly beyond its limits. The last chapter, a dialog between Satan and a student of Cantor, could be the basis of a book and is a true work of genius. I read it twice, not because I didn't understand it, but because I enjoyed it so much.
The other sections of the book cover many facets of logic, including lists of superb problems about people from the planet Og, where green northerners always tell the truth and red northerners always lie. However, green southerners always lie and red southerners always tell the truth. Similar to the knights and knaves problems, most can be solved using a simple table. Solutions to the problems are given at the end of each chapter.
Raymond Smullyan seems to exist at a different logical level than the rest of us. His problems are at times fiendishly clever, although not beyond the capacity of someone willing to think a bit. This is a case where you can expand your mind by showing how limited it was before.

I can't imagine life without it....
I have owned this book for over 20 years and still use it regularly. I am not a professional, but I can make suaces on any give day that compare favorably -- or outshine -- what is served in many top restaurants. The book's menus are a bit dated, favoring adaptations of classics, but you miss the point if you doggedly follow them. This book teaches you about making a virtually endless arrray of sauces, using classical techniques. Once you master the "mother" or foundation suaces, there is no limit to what you can imitate or invent. There is real work involved here, and you may need some additional equipment, but you can be smart about it. I make huge batch of demi-glace each winter and freeze it in small portions, which translates into a one-year gold mine of possibilities. This is a great source; I can't imagine life without it.

Great book for the professional or serious cook
I'm a culinary student here in New York and I picked up this book on the advise of my chef-instructor. I'm glad I listened to him. This book inspired my instructor to become a chef and to make almost every sauce in the book.

As for the book, it's pretty straightforward. It starts with a brief history of French sauces and then it pretty much goes right into the sauces. There are 5 mother sauces (Sauce Espagnole, Hollandaise, Béchamel, Velouté, and Tomato) and from these 5 you can make hundreds and hundreds of little derivative sauces. For example, take Sauce Espagnole (Brown Sauce). If you combine equal parts of Brown Sauce and Brown Veal Stock and let that reduce, you've got Demi-Glace (Half-Glaze). Now if you sauté some mushrooms, shallots, add some white wine, Madeira, some demi-glace and tomato, you've got Sauce Chasseur.

Here's another example. Take Velouté, add some mushroom liquid and a liaison, and mount the sauce with butter and you've got Sacue Allemande. Now take Sauce Allemande and add three simple ingredients and you've got Sauce Aux Champignons.

There are about 70 pages devoted to just brown sauces. The two most time consuming mother sauces to make is Sauce Espagnole and Velouté. Both require stock, however, Velouté is easy to make since it only takes 30 to 40 minutes to make once you have the stock. Sauce Espagnole, on the other hand, takes about 6 to 8 hours to make. Plus you need brown veal stock which takes anywhere from 8-11 hours to make.

As you can see it's pretty time consuming but if you take one weekend to make enough stock, once you're done you can freeze them in ice cube trays and take them as you need them. Remember the derivative sauces are really quick and simple, it's the mother sauces that take the most time.

If you're serious about cooking, I highly recommend this book.

Complex yet understandable
The saucemaking of classical French Haute Cuisine is a profession in itself, and there is a 'theory' or method behind it's madness. One begins with a 'sauce mere' (the mother sauce), then converts it in a series of steps (involving the addition of new flavors, the straining of spent ingredients, and concentration by simmering), finally 'finishing' the sauce with the addition of delicate herbs or flavorings that would be lost with continued heating. For example, the sauce mere 'demi-glace' (brown sauce thickened with flour and flavored with herbs and wine) is converted to sauce Robert by concentrating with more wine, and then finishing off the heat with butter and mustard.

This is the best book I've seen on the subject. Serious saucemaking is time consuming, but if the sauce meres are made in quantity and frozen in portions, the final assembly of nearly every sauce in the book may be accomplished as your dinner vegetables steam - by understanding the theory of progression from one sauce to the next, and devoting perhaps one Saturday every few months to keeping an eye on a stock pot, one may enjoy the sophistication of classical Haute Cuisine with the convenience of bottled substitutes. The initial chapters discussing the history of Haute Cuisine is a treat in itself. Most of the 100+ sauce recipes are followed with the recipe for a single classic example dish where it is featured.

When served with a fine sauce, your family and guests will close their eyes and savor every bite of your meal. Nice...

Interrogation Techniques Used on American Airmen During WWII
Having researched the history of the post that was formerly Dulag Luft as it is known. "Auswerstelle West" as it should have been referred to after 1941. I found this book to be extremely helpful. As children we always think of torture when it came to interrogations- the common tv perception. It was refreshing to find that the techniques used were not that much different than those employed by today's law enforcement- no not the TV cops with the physical abuse. I grew up on the post, later a US Army post, and the rumors were rampant.I also find it refreshing to see that the Author, Raymond Toliver, a true historian, who has a passion for the subject, addressed the issues of how prisoners were treated by the allies after the war. This book is a must read for anyone who is serious about researching how allied pilots were treated. It would also serve those who are serving today to see the trickery- craft- used by the interrogors. It was also amazing to learn the types of intelligence collected and how it was collated. 5 stars a must read.

A "must-read" book for interrogation techniques!
This book is a fast reader and proves that one doesn't need to beat, hit, scream at, or torture people (as is portrayed in the movies) to get information from them. If you're interested in interrogation techniques and some mind games employed by the Nazi's and the extensive database that they maintained on Allied pilots, this book is definitely for you.

A Great Book about Great Tactics
This book focuses on the interrogation tactics used by Hans J. Scharff on allied airmen that had been captured. Although the airmen were highly trained in resistance, he still managed to complete his task of obtaining information. The Author did an excellent job of telling the story. Also, on a personal note, I found it interesting to see what happened on a post where I grew up so many years before I lived there.

From a liberal's viewpoint
My personal theology is considerably more liberal than Dr. Brown's. Nevertheless, I think that he does a good job of explaining what many Christians believe about the divinity of Jesus and why. I also believe that his scholarship is thourough and honest, albeit not always impartial. But then again, I doubt that anyone's scholarship is totally impartial.

EXCELLENT
i guess this will be just another five star review for father brown! raymond brown (now deceased) was a catholic priest and a moderately critical new testament theologian PAR EXCELLENCE. this, like his other works, is well-reasoned, thorough, and essentially impartial. probably the best overall introduction to Christology (which one might define as the study of not only of Jesus, but of His relationship to His surroundings). father brown concentrates on subjects such as Jesus' preception of Himself and His purpose, the probable reaction of His comtemporaries to His teachings, and the overall picture we get from the gospels. this is tremendous scholarship distilled into a brief readable capsule! you will respect this work whether you are fundamentalist or pagan!

Fact filled, abounding with answers
I am currently using this book while enrolled in a course in Cristology in graduate school. I have found it to be very helpful and fact filled. The author is very staitforward and does not stray from the subject matter.

Jeremiah's Tomb
Using this book and a good map of Ireland, I found and explored the two possible sights of the tomb of Jeremiah. I had a great time in the effort.

Very interesting
This book is very educational. I am not a student of the Bible, but I really love the history and the theories that are written about this time period.

Jacob's Pillar
An excellent and insightful work. Capt's invaluable work on the history of the British Monarchy and its connection to King David and the Biblical Tribe of Judah is not only fascinating but probes one's mind and forces people to reconsider what they've been traditionally taught from scripture. I would recommend this wonderful work to any serious Bible student. As a good compliment to reading this book, one should read II Samuel chapter 7 and Psalms chapter 89 (and view how those scriptures are fulfilled in today's Monarchial Throne). It's amazing!!

A loving portrait of one of our best comics!
Chris Costello's bio of her Dad is a charming, funny and more often than not, touching memoir. Lou and Bud were terrific men and wonderful comedians and this book is a warm salute to them, not only as comics, but as men, husbands and fathers!

Chris Costello tells the true story of her father's life.
In this bio.Chris Costello(Lou's Costello's third daughter)tells the true story of her father's life. And gives us all real insight into who Lou Costello really was.She covers his life from his humble beginnings in Patterson,New Jersey to his cross country trek to Los Angeles,Cal. to try and be a movie star.To his difficult days as a studio laborer(Studio set designer)and stuntman to his early days as a Burlesque clown working with several partners and the true story of how Lou Costello first met Bud Abbott and how they really teamed up.She also tells what caused the problems between the two men and the actual events that lead to the untimely death of the little brother that she never really knew(Lou Costello Jr."Little Butch")and the real cause of the team's second and final breakup. There are also insights into Lou's family. His relationship with his Wife Ann(Which was not as bad as what was depicted in Mr.Bob Thomas'book:Bud & Lou)and his three daughters. And the problems that were instigaited by Lou's mother:Mrs.Helen(Lolly)Cristillo and the team's manager:Eddie Sherman. Both Mrs.Cristillo and Mr.Sherman made an effort to destroy Poor Lou's career and personal life. This is one of the few bios on a famous performer that shows us a more three dimenstional look at this talented but troubled clown.Without the book turning into an ugly scathology.A book worth having.Bravo Chris! Kevin S.Butler.

It is a warm look at a very funny and warm man
I bought this book back in 1979 and I have not put it down since. It is the true story of a clown that had his heart broken more than once but always had a smile and a warm heart for those he loved and those he never knew. I live one town over from Paterson NJ where Lou was from and I had the pleasure to meet his daughter Chris at a fan club gathering and if Lou were with us today he would be very proud of his little girl. God bless Lou and Bud and God Bless Chris for sharing her very special story with us.
