A Useful, Unfanciful Reference for the Masonic Historian
A brief ogranizational history of Freemasonry in the American colonies. It offers no penetrating analysis - nor did it intend to, but it does illustrate some of the tensions among the players at the time. Some masons might appreciate the light it sheds on how different the organization was then from what we take for granted today. It met all my expectations, and I am glad to have purchased it.

Hugo Language Course: Czech In Three Months

Czech in Three Months: Less than ideal
I write this with the perspective of someone who's learned several languages. The book is seriously flawed as a self-instruction course. Explanations as to the workings of grammatical points, such as hard and soft nouns, are incomplete; there are not enough practice dialogues; more vocabulary and grammar is introduced at the early stages than exercises with which to practice and reinforce what one has learned. From chapter 8 onwards things begin to look up, but I will be looking for another book to get myself up to the level required for chapter 8 of the Hugo book. At that point, I might return to the Hugo book, as it has a lovely sense of humor in the later dialogues, well worth learning for colloquial conversation.

The Merry Pilgrimage: How Charlemagne Went on a Pilgrimage
The Merry Pilgrimage is a translation of an old French poem/epic in story form, of which critical material has been drawn upon by various scholars. The story itself concerns how Charlemagne of the Hoary Beard and his Twelve Peers make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem where they obtain holy relics and then journey to Constantinople where King Hugo the Strong is made a vassal of Charlemagne. This is an extremely rare account which once was sung throughout Europe of Emperor Charlemagne and his chosen companions, such as Roland the Brave, Turpin the Archbishop, and Oliver the Wise who struck blows for Christendom by their mighty deeds. It has black and white illustrations throughout, and though a slim volume, and perhaps much of it fable, shows the wit and charm of this legendary King of the Franks. It is a notable addition to any serious collector or descendant (as I am) of the might and wisdom of the Great Carolus Magnus.

High-level coverage of Oracle Networking, needs details...
A good book if you are looking for a overview of Oracle in a network environment. Ignores the database itself (as it should). Covers Wide range of Oracle Networking components like SQL*Net, ODBC, network security, etc. Lacks technical usage details on individual parts. Good for DBA's, Sysadmin's and programmers trying to understand the network/communications area of Oracle.

It's Pronounced: Ralph One To Foresee For One!
This is the seminal work in sci-fi by the man who's editing direction shaped the modern genre, Hugo Gernsback, the guy they named the Hugo Awards after.

A future where everyone wears electric roller skates, has a number instead of a last name and cities have moving side walks... One of theose travelogues of the future extrapolated by a writer from the very beginings of the pulp era. The gadgetry seems almost Victorian, the philosophy seems dated, yet somehow you'll never forget this book.

I read this book in the early 60's and it was already very quaint and dated even back then. But somehow I've never forgotten it and parts of this book come to mind even now almost 40 years later. If you've ever seen the 1930 film "Just Imagine," then this is the literary equivalant.

Great book, but the tapes are mediocre, at best.
This course comes with a book and four cassettes. The book is great. It has a lot of historical, cultural, and touristical information about Spain, in Spanish geared for the student of the language. However, the tapes have so much instruction and commentary in English, that they lose almost all of their value as a tool for understanding what is heard. If this course is available without the tapes, my recommendation is that you go that route.

Classic story of man vs. nature
Toilers of the Sea is a Hugo story that thankfully lacks the incessant digressions about politics, but is also missing Hugo's knack for character interaction. The story is centered around an outcast seaman named Gilliatt who takes charge of salvaging a wrecked steam engine. The story drowns the reader with Gilliatt's heroism as he fights against the ocean, the weather and the devil fish. The only thing that makes this story worth reading is Hugo's suspense. A great story written by anyone else, this one only rates as good when compared with other Hugo classics.
