Most books on Elizabeth spend little time putting her reign into historical context, which is why Alison Plowden's books on that time period are a must-read for those interested in Elizabeth. In Danger to Elizabeth, Plowden describes the plans and plots of the Catholics who were determined to overthrow Elizabeth and rescue England from heresy. Plowden's research is thorough and her writing style is interesting and engaging.

I'm a student of the Great War, not a scholar. The text is terse yet totally complete. The style is never intimidating and the content stays pertinent to the subject being defined. If an expanded definition is required, just look up one of the CAPITALIZED words in the text, and you will find that word listed as well. Thank you.

This centenary series of the Complete Works is a major accomplishment. Volume I ('I Have Found God') goes right to the heart of Elizabeth's mystical vocation with a positively riveting General Introduction by Conrad De Meester, O.C. D., followed by a brilliant translation of Elizabeth's writings by Alethia Kane. Elizabeth's four major spiritual treatises being written in the last three months of her life, it's difficult to go anywhere but to the distinct heart of her message. I doubt that I've ever read a more enlightened essay on Elizabeth than De Meester's. If you look to understand who this woman was, read his perfect Introduction; taken together with a brief biography, he produces an ancient Elizabeth in an essential light. His appreciation burns with real insight into an obscured message and an authentic modern mystic. Kane leaves Elizabeth's voice alone, as other translators have not, making Kane's courageous, and ultimately peerless contribution the more valuable by leagues. Highest recommendation for Vols. I & II-- it's a champion series.

Elizabeth Taylor is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful women ever. This collection of photographs focuses on her life with Richard Burton, when she was at the height of her beauty. Bozzacchi's photos are a mixture of famous pictures (such as the one on the cover) as well as some that are more rarely seen. My favorite picture is the one of Elizabeth holding the pearls over her eyes...her beauty is truly amazing!
Also recommended is "My Love Affair With Jewelry" by Elizabeth Taylor herself...the two books make for a definitive collection of pictures of Elizabeth.

This is an intriguing book, well worth a read or ten. You don't need to be a historian, a critic, or an experienced reader, you have to be able to read.

This is a dazzling piece of cultural history about all the things people have wanted to be true about Elizabeth I whether they are or not, with fantastic pictures drawn from the plays and novels and movies in which her endlessly glamorous afterlife has been lived. It's a great book about why this enigmatic, dangerous woman matters and has mattered: it's funny, it's heartfelt, and it's scholarly too. Perfect for the thinking Glenda Jackson/Bette Davis/Cate Blanchett fan in your life, and a penetrating, witty meditation on fame, womanhood, and history.

Alfred Dodd has written perhaps the finest book on Francis Bacon while solving the mystery of Shakespeare's identity with rare combination of historical truth and placing it inside the narrative of a story. Dodd's penetrating insights and research leave most other Bacon biographers way behind. Partly due to the fact that Dodd himself was a Master Free- Mason the general public will have a unique glimpse and understanding of the ways of Freemasonry and it's influence throughout Bacon's life and how it saturates the Shakespeare Sonnets and Plays. The novice student to the more advanced researcher will profit greatly in absorbing the facts surrounding Bacon's mysterious birth , his relation to Queen Elizabeth, his passion and guidance to advance England thru education, sparking the English Renaissance and formulating a greater vocabulary for the English language, encouraging the New World settlements, overcoming numerous enemies like his cousin Cecil, and Coke the crooked lawyer, it's all revealed in this wonderful book. By the time one finishes reading it you will have not only a greater awareness of one of the world's greatest genuises and his selfless service to humanity and it's future but a deeper wisdom into the Shakespeare authorship issue. . Alfred Dodd has left us a great treasure chest for all to partake in.

Who doesn't love those period movies with the wonderful costumes and romantic plots? After I saw "Elizabeth", I found this book on a shelf at my mother's house and loved learning about this powerful woman who ruled England when women weren't "allowed" to do much of anything. I happened to rent "Queen Margot" (French language movie w/subtitles) and that helped make the Elizabethan time more vivid. The book was written in a narrative form; not as a history book but as an amazing story. I only put it down to feed my toddlers or sleep (or so it seemed). Ms. Luke held my rapt attention throughout each chapter. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in finding out more about probably the most amazing woman who ever lived.
