Ireland : Historical Echoes, Contemporary Politics
I read this book with great delight and enthusiasm. I was already acquainted with Dr. Finnegan's previous history of Ireland and was looking forward to an updated edition. The good news here is that this book is a wholly new work, ambitious but eminently readable, peppered with Dr Finnegan's own scholarly but literary style. Anyone interested in the roots of the current conflicts in Ireland and a clear picture of the state of Irish politics today, would do well to purchase this book. Anyone who calls themselves knowledgeable about the situation in Ireland needs to have this book on their shelf.

Dynamic history at its best!
I bought this book as part of my research for my master's thesis on Midwestern progressivism. I expected the usual rather dull factual account. Instead I was pleasantly surprised by the comprehensive research, highly readable prose, and the profundity of the interpretation. Moreover, I learned far more about the realities of politics and society during the progressive period than I have from far more celebrated works. This is good history, and like all good history it focuses upon the past and not the personal saws of the writer. A bit pricey, I have never regretted the purchase. If you are looking for dynamic history at its best, check this out!

An Extraordinary Book
Published at the time of the Kienholz Retrospective Show at the Whitney Museum in 1996, this book not only documents that show with over 400 illustrations (many in color), it is also a tribute to Ed Kienholz, who died in 1994. Contributions by art historians, artists, friends and most importantly, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, make up a history that spans 4 decades. It begins with Ed's solo work in the Beat Era of the 1950s and continues with the collaborative work done by Ed and wife Nancy from 1972 to 1994. Even those who are not artists cannot help but be moved by this book. The stories are interesting, often funny and always personal. From collages to life-size environments, the work is not afraid to confront issues of cruelty or to embrace the forgotten in society. Unique vision, artistry and the materials of everyday life (collected at flea markets and junk shops) combine to make art that can be quiet with despair, cry out in anguish, or even make us laugh. Considered by some as ugly, this work is never dull or without compassion. As art historian and curator Walter Hopps says on the book jacket, "The work of Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz has had an enormous impact on the development of contemporary sculpture." I recommend this book to anyone interested in contemporary art or social science -- or who just appreciates a beautiful book and fascinating story.

MONITOR AMERICA
As a federal law enforcement officer I travel throughout five states and deal with all different levels of law enforcement jurisdictions. This book has proven itself invaluable to me on my various assignments. I have been able to have my radio set up for the various jurisdictions before I ever leave. This has saved many hours in setting up communications with the various jurisdictions I will be working in. I hope and encourage you to revise this publication and bring it up to date with the current frequency changes. I wish to commend the staff responsible for publishing this outstanding national communications guide. I would be at a loss without it as I am sure others feel the same way.

A framework for true reconciliation in Northern Ireland
John Hume is a virtually unknown figure in the United States, but he has been steadily gaining recognition due to his work in the Northern Irish peace agreement. This recognition is overdue and much deserved. This monumental book outlines Hume's political philosophy - a philosophy which seeks to brush aside the vengefulness and intransigence of Northern Ireland's past, searching instead for reconciliation through justice for all. Hume is heavily influenced by Matin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy, and quotes from these two figures flavor Hume's text. Hume's themes may seem repetitive, and his ideas seem to be based on the shakey foundation of human progress, but this work demonstrates that he is a champion for for a true peace in Northern Ireland - a peace that is just for all.

Excellent comtemporary text
This edition of Ten Cate has moved this text into a position of being the true definitive reference for dental education. The text is contemporary, makes great strides in standardizing terminology, and provides adequate clinical correlation to this basic science area. The only shortfall is the lack of color micrographs of the histologic sections. While this does not detract from the solidity of the content, beginning students prefer this to B&W.

The Phantom Coach: Collected Ghost Stories

Authors: Amelia B. Edwards, Richard Dalby, and Paul Lowe
Amazon base price: $42.50
Average review score:

A superb anthology of Victorian-era ghost stories.
Amelia Edwards' The Phantom Coach (1-899562-82-6) is edited by Richard Dalby and gathers her best Victorian-era ghost stories under one cover. This satisfying collection proves the ghost story can have many themes and settings and still prove refreshingly different from tale to tale. This is the first to gather all her supernatural works under one cover.

The most precise and beautiful information available.
John Richards monograph on the genus Primula is the best book I have seen on the subject. I work with primroses every day and it would be much more difficult without this clarifying volume. The theoretical background is sound, the disposition is easy to follow and the illustrations are both informative and pleasing to the eye.
