Great Catalog
I thought this book was great! The pictures of the objects are beautiful. Where a picture could not be obtained there is usually a detailed sketch of the object. The descriptions give not only insight into use of the archaological object but also surrounding information like similar objects and archeological context. Then the essays descibe the time period and unknown/debated issue of Egyptian Archeology. As a newbie to Egyptian Archaeology I found the book easy to read and felt that things were explained well.

Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton: The Secret Agent Who Made the Pilgrimage to Mecca, Discovered the Kama Sutra, Brought the Arabian Nights to the

A special book worth seeking out
Sir Richard Burton was a true legend -- he spoke more than 25 languages, travelled to all sorts of remote places, and had a fascinating life. If you enjoy armchair travel books, this one if for you. Rice travelled extensively in the 10 years it took him to research Burton's life. Burton has many "firsts" to his name: the first European to look for the source of the Nile, the first to discover Lake Tanganyika, the first to disguise himself and visit Medina and Mecca, and the list goes on. If not for Burton, we would not have the Kama Sutra nor the tales from Arabian Nights. You can just see Burton in his tent in Africa translating and keeping diary notes. This is one of the most interesting biographies I have ever read. A true adventurer.

Superb Biography
A spuperb bio of the scholar poet. The structure is interesting. First, the author presents a chronological look at Housman's life with some salient facts, emphasizing the most important influences in his life. The latter part of the book is devoted to closer scrutiny of the different aspects of his work and personal affairs taken separately: classical studies, family relationships, friendships, etc.

I read this in preparation for seeing the new Tom Stoppard play, " Invention of Love " which deals with Housman's somewhat tortured, but extremely productive life. Glad that I did. The book stands by itself as top biography.

A true American adventure
Marvin O'Connell has done a wonderful and complete job of describing the life of Edward Sorin. The author begins in a small French village and brings the life of Sorin forward in clear and entertaining language. A story of faith, courage, and determination unfold in the 800 pages without wasting the readers time. The story of Edward Sorin who founded the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana reflects the American spirit. Overcoming difficulties, both human and physical elements, was commonplace for Sorin. The author has done an excellent job of capturing the life of Sorin, and allows his subject to serve as an example for all. This book is recommended as an excellent biography, inspirational writing, and American adventure.

Far, Far From Home
This happens to be my fathers book, however I am compelled to comment despite my potential bias.

Firstly, the authors are Edward W. Simpson Jr. and Guy R. Everson (ie. not R.W. Simpson - he was a historical figure in the book). Dad found the letters hidden in a storage chest. He transcribed them over a period of four years and both authors spent another 3 years documenting the accuracy of the movements. Secondly, I am pleased to say it is truly one of the most wonderful bits of history that actually reads like a novel (important for me because I am not a Civil War buff). The story was a compilation of letters, written by a soldier dipicting everything from grand strategy, individual combat, to challenging personal experiences. The Simpson brothers (ie. the letter writters) served in Longstreets Corps under Robert E. Lee, in the Army of Northern Virginia. I am amazed at the courage that war required and how the letters capture the essence, the struggle, and the pathos of our Civil War.

A superb resource for researchers in intrinsic motivation
For anyone researching or writing in the area of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation this is an invaluable resource. The first chapter gives a detailed overview of Self-Determination Theory and its sub-theories from the theory's originators, Deci & Ryan. Subsequent chapters by a range of distinguished researchers provide detailed literature reviews linked to theory in a variety of contexts, notably education and the workplace. This book has saved me probably hundreds of hours of searching and interpreting the research literature in this field the hard way! Although certainly an academic text, I didn't find it too dry. Most of the authors write well and their enthusiasm for the subject shines through, (although perhaps this was my impression because I feel the same way!). Highly recommended.
