I loved this book!
It is 1857 in St. Louis. Eleven year old Elsa Linstrom's father went off to find gold in California when Elsa was three, and he died there in the wilderness. Elsa's older brother, Karl, can't hold a steady job because he's drinking with friends all day long. So Elsa and her mother must work in a girls' boarding school, cooking, cleaning, and serving meals. The wealthy students are mean to Elsa, but she can't fight back against them because her mother might lose her job. Mattie Green's mother died giving birth to her, and her father, a riverboat captain, raised her on his riverboat, and during her childhood Mattie travelled up and down the Mississippi. Now, Mr. Green has decided Mattie must get a proper education, so against Mattie's wishes, he has sent her to the boarding school where Elsa works. Francesca de Larmo, daughter of a wealthy couple, comes to the school a spoiled, snobby girl, and is friends with all the popular, stuck-up girls. Mattie immediatley stands up for Elsa against the other girls in school. It's only when the cruelty and teasing go to far that Francesca gives Elsa a chance - and finds out just how nice she is. Elsa dreams of learning how to read, and Francesca and Mattie team up to teach her. And the three unlikely friends work together against the meanest girl in school - and are the most surprised of all at the results.

Cool book
This book, which is mainly a fact book about asteroids, with a little about comets, was cool. It was easy to read and understand, but not so simple that you wouldn't learn anything from it. From this book, I learned a lot about asteroids, much more than one could learn at the local movie theater. If you are interested in learning about asteroids and are in middle school or upper elementary school, this is the book for you!

Okay--but not great
The first thing I'm going to say about Kathleen Duey is that she certainly did her research on the San Francisco of 1906. She has many details about what the streets looked like, what styles were in fashion, how corsets were put on, etc. The second thing I'm going to say about her is that her descriptions are very vivid. When I read her novel, I really saw San Francisco before the earthquake, heard the street sounds, etc. These reasons are why I gave the book three stars instead of two.

What I did not like about the novel is all the disjointed characters. Ms. Duey's point in having all of them was, I believe, to show exactly how the earthquake affected people from all walks of life. So those of you who are expecting a love story--thanks to the plot synopsis--should know that there are other stories in the novel, not just Joseph and Sierra's. Why the jacket copywriter of this book wrote that it was about a love that defied the odds, yadda, yadda, yadda--I don't know. It is really about more than that, so those who just want the love story will find fewer pages dedicated to it than they would like.

Speaking of the characters, even the most minor ones were more than two-dimensional cardboard figures (though just barely). However, the most important "character" was not a person, but the city itself. In this story, San Francisco, 1906, becomes more than just the background and setting, it becomes something dynamic and active. I liked that--and those who like seeing a place come alive will, too.

AWESOMe book!! a MUST READ!
San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 is by far the best book out of all historical romances. It's a love story between hotel maid Sierra and rich guy Joseph. This book not only has excitement and real historical disasters, it focuses on a love that wouldn't die, even in the midst of all danger. The author, Kathleen Duey, uses really descriptive words and phrases to make your imagination soar into the sky. Anyone who has read this book will agree that you get caught in the romance and danger; it's almost like you're one of the characters. This is an excellent, must read book! :) ENJOY! :)

A Great Story!
I really enjoyed this book. It is a wonderful love story aboutSierra (a poor orphan maid) and Joseph (a rich rancher) and all thetrouble they have getting together. It also has lots of really cool stuff about life in 1906 and about the terrible earthquake! I think it would be fun to live back then after reading this book except for the earthquake! I would love to read more books by this writer because she knows how to make readers laugh and cry! I think everyone who likes romance stories or stories about long ago should BUY THIS BOOK!!!!

WONDERFUL
Very good book, it covers just three days in the whole thing, but you always want to finish it in one setting. I highly recomend this book.

The Unforgettable Morning
This book is a real touching one. The suffering of all the characters was passed to the reader and worried him also. It was a great book because it taught great lessons of love and especially of life. It also taught about how surprising the morning of the Japanese attacks in Hawaii were and how clueless the people were of what was happening. I hope you also enjoy the book and learn as much as I did about the terrifying morning of December 7, 1941.

A 6th grade student

A great new book from the American Diaries series.
Twelve-year-old Janey, her parents, and her four-year-old brother Michael have left their home in Kansas to live on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It's December 1941, and Janey's father, a welder, has been hired by the military to work at Hickman Airfield, near Pearl Harbor. Janey loves the beauty of her new home, but she is terrified by the threat of war between the United States and Japan, which could lead to an invasion of Hawaii. On the peaceful Sunday morning of December 7, without warning, Japanese planes attack. Janey and her mother and brother are separated from her father. They are forced to evacuate their home, but Janey is determined to return - because she knows in her heart that her father can't be dead, and that she will see him again. This was an excellent new book in the American Diaries series that captured the terror of the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, as faced by the many civilian families living on the island.

Great for a book report!
I had to read an adventure book for a book report. This was a good one. It started slow, but it got better when Celou was tracking her family. It got really exciting at the end -- I didn't know what was going to happen to Celou next! It was yukky to read how Celou fed and cleaned up her baby brother, but I guess that's how they did things back then. Neat book about a girl who was a heroine.

Exciting!
Celou's family has been taken captive by another tribe-except for her and she has to save them. She follows them to their camp and has to figure out a plan. But what can she possilbly do? She must also survive herself. But how? Very, very exciting!

Great new American Diaries book!
Celou's father is a French fur trapper and her mother is a Shoshone Indian woman. Celou's father has gone away for a month to sell the year's pelts. Celou, her mother, and her two younger brothers are alone in their remote summer camp. All of a sudden, four Crow warriors arrive and take Celou's mother and brothers captive. Celou mannages to escape. She rides for help at the main Shoshone camp nearby, but finds that it has been attacked by the enemy. Now Celou is completely on her own. Can she save her family, or will she be captured as well?

A good Survival book!
This story is about Rebecca Whittier, the daughter of the captain of the Vigilance-a whaling boat hunting for whales in 1844. Rebecca wishes she was back home in New Bedford, with her friend and cousin. John Lowe is a free African American about Rebecca's age. John was indentured by his father to work on the Vigilance, but John hates the work. When a sudden hurricane hits the Vigilance and the lifeboats leave without them, Rebecca and John must help each other to survive the violent winds and waves. I think the other Survival books were better than this one. They spent too much time describing the whaling process and not enough time during the hurricane. It was still a better-than-average book, though.

This book was great!!
I have read the book of SURVIVAL! HURRICANE.
I thought that it was the BEST survival book that I have read in a long time. This is such a good book that I couldn't put it down once I started it. After I read the first few pages I was into it right away. That was when I became a good fan of the survival books. Kathleen Duey and K. A. Bale are one of the best adventure writers that I have read about.

My favorite Survival! book.
Rebecca Whittier's father is the captain of the Vigilance, a whaling ship that sails all over the world in hunt of whales. On this particular voyage, Rebecca, her mother, and her younger brother, Joseph, have accompanied Captain Whittier. Eleven-year-old Joseph enjoys the voyage, but for thirteen-year-old Rebecca, it's been four long years of loneliness and boredom. She misses her friends in New Bedford and longs for the voyage to end. John Lowe, who is about Rebecca's age, was indentured by his father to living quarters dirty and cramped, and the work difficult. He, too, wishes the voyage to end so he can be back home. When the Vigilance is trapped in a hurricane and may sink, Rebecca and John find their lives in peril. They must help each other survive and save the ship. I loved this book

Survival:Fire good for 10 years old and up
I recommend this book to 10-year-old kids and up, either boy or girl. I recommend this book to them because I think it was a very interesting book. It tells you the history on what happened in Chicago in 1871 about Chicago fires that were forcing people out of their houses and filling the streets with ashes. "The streets are planked; every block down there is full of woodworks and coal yards." It was also an exciting book because you didn't know what to expect, or what was going to happen after each fire. For example, in the scene when Julie and Nate were in the streets, Julie didn't know if she could keep on walking because the air was so smoky. "The air was so smoky that it stung her eyes and burned her lungs." It was also a bit frightening to actually know this was going on so many years ago and no one really knew what to do when it had started. In conclusion, if you are interested in what happened in Chicago at this time period, than I recommend you reading this book.

Two kids are thrown together and struggle to survive.
The time and place is 1871 Chicago. Nate is an orphan who lives with his aunt, who runs a boardinghouse. Julie is the spoiled daughter of a wealthy couple. When Julie is separated from her parents the night of the Great Chicago Fire, she is rescued from kidnappers by Nate, who she has never met before. Julie, pampered since birth, is completely helpless. It falls upon Nate to protect her and bring her back to her family, but at the same time, he longs to find his aunt to make sure she is all right. This was an exciting survival story that had me on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what would happen next to Nate and Julie.

Survival FIRE
The setting is on a boardwalk in Chicago Illinois, were a cow started a fire! The two main characrers are Nate and Julie. Who are two kids that try to esape, the blazes with other peaple. Nate really likes adventures. At the beginning of the story, Julie and Nate help Mr. Black clear out his bookstore, so the books would not burn. In the middle of the book, the fire gets really big. Nate and Julie find a horse and ride it to Nate's Aunt's boardinghouse, so they don't die. Along the way they see a lot of action. You will have to read the book to see if Nate and Julie survive and get to the boardinghouse.

My opiion is that it is a good book. You should read the book if you like action. You should also read it if you like books that have to do with surving.

A book about the Titanic
The book Survival! Titanic was unfortunately very predictable. Usually in books and movies about the Titanic, there are two characters who meet on the ship. When they are becoming good friends, the ship sinks. This is exactly what happens in the book. Karolina and Gavin meet on the Titanic and become good friends. Then all of a sudden, the ship hits the iceberg. Their treacherous journey for survival is rough, and when Karolina needs help, Gavin risks his life to help her. Although the book was about the two characters, I felt that it did tell how people really felt when the ship was sinking, and it was discriptive. Read the book to find out who lives, who dies, and the story. I would recommend this book for 8-11 year olds who like reading about the Titanic or historical-fiction.

SURVIVAL TITANIC
I recommend this book to kids aged 10-15 because it's a book about history and about surviving a shipwreck. This book has good excitement and suspense, you don't know if Karolina or Gavin will make it alive. This book can help kids in a lot of different situations; such as a social studies test about when the TITANIC sank, also this could actually save kids lives if they are really on a sinking ship. What if you loved your aunt so much that if a ship was about to sink that you could save your self-including your aunt. Karolina and Gavin saved a lot of peoples lives by telling people to "get to a life boat immediately". This book is a good thriller and I suggest you read it!

A survival story about two kids on the Titanic.
After her parents die in England, Karolina's aunt comes to take her home to America. Although she misses her parents terribly, she has resigned herself to the fact that they are never coming back, and she tries to enjoy the trip home on the Titanic, sad as she is. Gavin, who is twelve like Karolina, is earning his passage to America by working in the Titanic's galley. He misses his family back home in Ireland but is eager to join his older brother in New York. Gavin and Karolina meet by chance one night and become friends. On the night the ship sinks, they are thrown together, fighting to survive the terrible disaster. I reccomend this book if you like survival stories or books about the Titanic or shipwrecks.

Horrible Book
Boringest book you'll read in your life....how horifiying this.. book is.

Survival Blizzard
Have you ever survived a blizzard? Survival Blizzard, written by K. Duey and K. A. Bale, takes place in Estes Park, Colorado in 1886. Things were going well for a poor but smart girl, named Maggie. Hadyn, a rich, selfish boy, is really a spoiled brat. The problem Hadyn faces is that he wants to go home, because he doesn't like living on the ranch with Maggie. Hadyn's big opportunity to move finally comes when his aunt and uncle have to go to the hospital. Of course, he takes the opportunity and leaves the ranch. He also leaves Maggie worried.
Maggie finds out that her spoiled, rich cousin never made it to the train station. She feels she has to go rescue Hadyn, who was stranded in a
blizzard. Where could he be? Will Hadyn be alive? Even if she finds Hadyn, will he want to go with Maggie? Just imagine two kids in the face of disaster, who find the courage and determination that they never dreamed they possessed.
....

A gripping survival story that had me on the edge of my seat
When Maggie's father, a rancher in 1886 Colorado, is injured, Maggie's mother takes him to town to see a doctor. That leaves Maggie alone with her spoiled city cousin, Hadyn, who is visting Colorado as a punishment for being expelled from school. Hadyn and Maggie have a fight, and Hadyn runs away, determined to find the train station. When Maggie learns Hadyn never made it to town, in spite of hating him, she sets out to find him in the wilderness. But a blizzard descends upon the mountains, trapping Hadyn and Maggie in a harsh and unforgiving wilderness. If they are going to survive and find their way home, Hadyn and Maggie have to work together. This was an excellant survival story in a historical setting.
