Ayer: The Great Philosophers (The Great Philosophers Series)

Best of the Series
The Great Philosophers series is generally a mixed bag of accessible and inaccessible or dry material. Their treatment of Ayer is the most engaging and thought provoking of the series, most likely because his Logical Positivist philosophy is not nearly as obtuse as say Bertrand Russell's mathmatical conundrums. This book is highly recommended to both students and casual readers.

Banking Law in the United States
Published in Ring-bound by Michie Publishing (1992)
Authors: Alfred Maury Pollard, Keith H. Ellis, and Joseph P. Daly
Amazon base price: $185.00
Average review score:

great (I'm biased though - read on)
My father, Keith H. Ellis, was one of the co - authors of this book. So of course I think it's great! Unfortunately it's way above my head, so no I have not read it. I work with computers mostly. However, I do know that my father and the other authors are extremely intelligent men and I'm sure it is as eloquently written as possible for rather technical law material. As for how useful this book will be to you I'm not sure, I just wanted to be the first person to have reviewed this book.

Every thing you need to know about the baroque bass violone
This is perhaps the most comprehensive book on the baroque double bass violone. It was originaly written in German by Alfred Planyavski and translated into English by Dr. James Barket. The book includes insightful information, illustrations, photographs and perhaps the most complete bibliography on the double bass. I used this book as my main source in writing for my master's research and bibliography class. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of the double bass.

A Mission for Santa's Elves with Sticker
Published in Paperback by Lorenz Books (1900)
Authors: Andy Charman and Andrew Geeson
Amazon base price: $5.00
Average review score:

A very well crafted political and feminist biography.
In Belle Moskowitz: Feminine Politics And The Exercise Of Power In The Age Of Alfred E. Smith, Elisabeth Perry presents an impressive work of biographical scholarship on the woman who was four-term Democratic governor of New York and unsuccessful presidential candidate, Alfred E. Smith's closet political advisor. Bell Moskowitz (1877-1933) was the most powerful woman in Democratic party politics during the 1920s and served as Smith's strategist, public relations director, and campaign manager. She was also a major force in shaping the social welfare programs for which his gubernatorial administration is best remembered for today. A well-crafted feminist biography, Belle Moskowitz showcases a pioneering female activist who achieved unprecedented influence in American politics, only to fall into an undeserved obscurity. Belle Moskowitz redresses that historical oversight and is a very highly recommended contribution to women's studies, American political history, and feminist biography collections.

a master story teller, an atrocious punster
Bennett Cerf has had many careers over his lifetime - publisher, lecturer, newspaper columnist as well as television personality (the host on "What's My Line", seen on the cable channel Game Show Network). But one of the things Mr Cerf was most famous for was making people laugh.

In "The Sounds of Laughter", Mr Cerf serves up some help for those who like a good joke or a bad pun, but especially those who have to do public speaking. The book is divided into various catagories - politics, history, wildlife (among others) and of course, puns. And all of the jokes are suitable to tell any audience of any age. There are history lessons (including an interesting quote from Adolph Hitler) as well as famous folks'
anecdotes such as Dorothy Parker and Gertrude Stein.

This book is definitely a funny one for people of all ages and especially helpful if you happen to do a lot of presentations. Slip one of these jokes into your presentation, your audience is laughing - and you got them eating out of the palm of your hand.
So give it a try - you'll really enjoy yourself.
