The best
The writing in the book was sanctioned by the artist himself, and features extensive firsthand quotes. This is virtually essential toward approaching this artist's work. If you can find one of these, it's well worth it. The painting on the cover is now at the Hirshhorn in Washington. I recommend Jensen's work to all those unafraid of art that challenges you in all ways, and I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm his son.

"MUST-READ" FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE "FANTASTIC"
Only novel of the artist and illustrator Alfred Kubin (1877-1959), link between pre-World War I Austro-Hungary and the modern, post-war Central Europe. As such immensely important. Oppressive atmosphere throughout. Excellent example of the "Fantastic" in the literature of the German-speaking countries.

Duckett's book makes this ancient king three-dimentional.
This book is outstanding. It draw a vibrant picture of a king whose life is otherwise obscured by the mists of time. Duckett presents a picture of a man who is simultaneously legendary and very human. This book is a wonderful choice for anyone interested in medieval times or the roots of British culture. Duckett's writing style is clean and consice, free of the usual scholarly jargon. It is a must for any student of history, amature or professional.

Alfred for High School Students
The author of this book (Asser) was a contemporary of King Alfred's and was brought to Wessex (Alfred's kingdom) in the ninth century as part of Alfred's plan to improve education and culture in Anglo-Saxon England. The text is highly readable and gives students an eyewitness account of Alfred's kingship: military successes and failures (esp. fighting the Vikings), advancement of English culture and education, consolidation of the seven kingdoms, and cultivation of Christian kingship in the Early Middle Ages. This kind of book is especially fun for students to read as it shows us "real history," including things such as Alfred's 20-year fight with some sort of intestinal disorder. We see Alfred as a man, not just an aloof, wooden figure that died long ago. This edition also includes maps, geneological charts of the Carolingian (i.e., "French") kings and the English kings up to Alfred, and a 29-page introduction by Simon Keynes and Michael Lapidge, which provides excellent background on the period in which Alfred and Asser lived. Also included are excerpts from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which was begun in Alfred's reign, extracts of Alfred's own writings and translations, and miscellaneous primary sources such as letters, books, and documents of the era. These items make good backgrounding for teachers. When this biography is read together with the Arthurian legend, it helps students to compare the real and the ideal kings of the Middle Ages.

A Solid Foundation
I have been teaching guitar since 1980 and have taught from other guitar methods. I always return to this one. This method starts with basic music theory as it relates to the guitar. Then one string at a time introduces new songs and chords. Alfred's basic guitar method is a concise and easy to follow book. In addition with each new lesson there are photos and diagrams that show left hand placement. In the back of the book is a chord chart that is arranged to key signatures not in alphabetical order as is in many other methods. This is important for the beginning student to learn which chords sound correct with other chords in various major and minor keys. Overall I would highly recommend Alfred's basic guitar method books 1-6 for a solid foundation in guitar studies.

great for kids of all ages!
I purchased this book for a preschooler's birthday present anddecided to keep it for my own 16 month old son and myself! Althoughthe content is too advanced for him, he is fascinated by the collages of tinted photos. The colors used for the photos are bright, but not obnoxiously so...nice change from typical kids' books AND appealing to those who are into "retro". Both of us like the silly photos of the dogs at the party, too. I think that my son will really enjoy this book in a few years when he can pick out the items in the photo puzzles, but in the meantime, we are content to read about silly dogs (and one cat) at a birthday party. Happy Birthday, Alfred!

All the Way Home
Alfred Wright takes you into battle briefly as the Civil War is ending. Will Brandt is a captured Texas Confederate soldier. The end of the war finds him 1500 miles from his home, family, and young wife. No one knows if he is alive or dead. He has only his wits and those of his comrades to help him survive the journey home. The journey is dangerous due to the high levels of emotions of the North and South and the variety of people encountered along the way. The times are hard for everyone, but the dignity and honor with which Will ultimately faces his problems makes me proud that he was a Texan. I could not put this book down once I started reading it. A favorite book which I have read and re-read many time over the years, Love Is A Wild Assault, is one that I would compare the author's ability to involve the reader and share details. He was able to paint the words in such a way that you could actually smell the smoke of burned out homes and feel the stones on your bare feet as you took one more step toward Texas...toward home. I am the winner for having read this book and I will read it many times over. Thank you Mr. Wright please write another book soon.
