Why is glass fragile and not steel?
I used to beleve that questions like that are not possible to answer without mathematics and advanced physics. Gordon does it, and he does it very good. If you like aha-experiences, read this book!

a fine collection
I recently came across this book and was thrilled at what I read. Rosen is a wonderful storyteller, his poems are spun seamlessly. Although his use of language is fairly conventional, it is full of surprises. I highly recommend this to any poetry reader who is looking for a book that will reinvigorate your belief in the power of common speech.

How long can you "dragon" this out?
The first book I read in this series was the Dragon Knight and I loved it. I found out that there were several in the series. I bought all of them. I am not sure how many senerios Dickson can come up with. This is the thrid that I have read. This one wasn't bad although. Sir Jim and Angie, along with Brian and his true love go to a 12 day Christmas get together. Any one who is anybody is there. The biggest problem, although not the only one is that there is a 1800 year old Troll, who doesn't appear ready for retirement in Miami yet, who is shaking down the castle from his layer in the basement.
Now it wouldn't be worth our noble knight's effort to don his armor or change into his dragon shape for just one troll. Dickson throws in a lot of trolls, a whole bunch of other dragons who want to be part of the Christmas period and several other problems for our hero to solve.
The one thing that I did like about this book was the fact he allows Angie to become an important part of the story instead of the shadowy figure she has been before. Also Sir Jim gets to use some very interesting magic through the story. There is a nice twist towards the final chapters of the book, but the ending is a bit corney. WAIT! - flying dragons, talking wolfs, hob goblins, 1800 year old trolls? Maybe the end fits.
If you like the Dragon Knight series you'll enjoy this book. But I'm not sure how many more things Dickson can put our hero into before it becomes more boring then soaring.

Another great book in the series.
Yet another great one by Dickson. Read this and enjoy!

Well known characters in all new situations
Once again Jim Eckert, AKA the Dragon Knight has to face the dark powers. One should think this might become boring by now but Dickson made up a great scenery with lots of fascinating characters. Not only has James to deal with an army of trolls who intend to change history itself, but also with a great number of problems on the Earls christmas-party. Needless to say that the way he solves medevial trouble with 20th century skills is both surprising and unusual. To let a troll, disguised as a black knight, join the tounament to smell out a disguised troll among the guests was surely extraordinary. I also enjoyed to find characters like Angie, his charming but strong-willed wife, play more important roles than in earlier books.
Everyone who liked The Dragon At War will surely love this book, because it gives more insight on already well known characters and adds a lot of new ones who aren't less interesting.

Really funny and entertaining !
I usually have an aversion to books in which the characters go from our ordinary 20th century to a fantasy world, but this book was a good surprise in this aspect because the subject was handled in a way I rather enjoyed.Having a dragon (if only the body) as the principal character was also very amusing, though the rest of the characters are also very well conceived and interesting (you'll see an English wolf is different from all other wolves...).I think the story is great, and Gordon R. Dickson is an excellent writer, I can't compare with is other books because it's the first I've read (but not the last, I think). I think you won't regret reading it!

Jim Eckert, Baron de Bois de Malencontri et Riveroak
Ah, yes. Just the name, "Jim Eckert" brings back whole fleets of nostalgic memories. I first read The Dragon and the George way back when, when my dear father bought me the entire set, in hardback. It must have set him back a bundle, but I could see that he knew I enjoyed it. As I was perusing the archives of Amazon.com, then, I called up those abovementioned nostalgic memories and just had to write a review up. If you read just one more book this year, make it The Dragon and the George. If you read seven or eight more, make it the entire series! Gordon Dickson is, without a doubt, the most enticing fantasy writer I have ever had the privelige to read the work of. His research is impeccable, which is a rare thing in fantasy writers---authors, I should say---and the way he spins the fabric of the story is a true mark of a Master in his trade.

This book should be read by anyone who loves dragons!
This book, like Anne McCaffrey's "The Dragonriders' of Pern" books, is about dragons. But this time, the human doesn't _ride_ a dragon, he _is_ a dragon! "The Dragon and the George" is about Jim Eckert, who has transported through astral projection into a parallel 14th century world, with talking wolves, dragons, and Mages. He has gone back to rescue his fiancee, Angie, who had also gone back to this world. But unlike Angie, Jim is in the body of a dragon! This book is not only interesting in that Jim compares the 20th century world to wear he is now, but the fact that he has been transported into the body of the dragon Gorbash makes it all the more interesting! It makes you wonder what it would be like to be a dragon for a while, and in a way, it lets you know the answer! It has an interesting, humorous plot, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Recommended with one condition...
The 7 given for the review along with a recommendation to buy the book is based on the following...

My impression of Dickson's "Dragon" series from reading reviews in other publications was that while each book is related and sequential in time, the stories in each book were designed to be stand-alone and it was supposed to be possible to read and enjoy individual titles without necessarily having read the previous books. Having said that, I thought that this book was a fine read and would recommend it but I don't think that I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't read the previous two novels. The plot stands on its own with no problem but there is a constant drumbeat of passing references to previous incidents and characters. For instance, one major character's motivations for his actions in this novel involved an incident in a previous novel.

It's obvious that Dickson has established a rich and detailed background for his stories about the Dragon Knight but without any knowledge of the back story, readers may find this novel somewhat confusing.

I think that you will enjoy the book but I suspect that you will enjoy it a lot more if you have read the previous novels in the series.

Excellent.
I have just reread this book for the third time, and still found it enjoyable. It is a light, easily read book. It does have slight connection to a previous book but this does not detract from its readability or enjoyability. Anyone wishing to have a light, humorous read, and can cope with fantasy, should not go past this excellent series.

I found this series on par with Christopher Stasheff's 'wizard in rhyme' series.

Easy U.S. History on the Ears
This audiobook is an excellent addition to the U.S. history-buff's glove compartment. There are basically four tapes of interviews by Roger Mudd done for the History Channel. Mudd asks questions to the featured historians and they respond with stories and factoids to keep you thinking. I can listen to them many times and still learn things that I didn't catch the last time around. This is also a great way to brush up on your U.S. history while enriching what you already know.

A MUST for All Americans--not just history buffs
This is the very best audio tape I've ever listened to. While some interviews are better (Stephen Ambrose) than others (Richard White), each one offers important insight and perspective on the most important events of our time. Through the eyes of these men, our nation's history is told so clearly and succinctly, and with such passion, that you can't help but be changed and moved by the experience. I guarantee you'll come away with a better grasp of who we are and where we're headed as a nation.

The dragon who doesn't stop
Yet another great performance by the dragon knight. It has all the enjoyable elements of the previous book that I loved. My dissapointment with this book is that to me the final threat seems all to easy to take care of in the end. I am deffinatly not trying to say this book is any less than the rest but the dark powers could have found some thing better than the hollow men. On the bright sde more than just the hollow men are there and it makes the book that much more enjoyable. Jim, Brian and Giles provide another exciting battle against the dark powers that you will love. Keep reading these books, they get even better than this.

The Dragon on the Border
The third book in Mister Dickson's series was quite good, but I dont think it was as good as the first two. First, I don't think the antagonists were quite evil enough, they were just personalityless ghosts who raided various people who lived on the border. One of my favorite parts of the Dragon Knight was that the sorceror had a distinct personality and did some distincly evil things. Second, Giles was hardly in the book! I mean he's the reason James is there in the first place! And finally, James didn't even turn himself into a dragon very much! I mean the title of the book is: The DRAGON on the Border! But despite this few quirks, I still think this was a very good book and worthy of the Dragon Knight Series.

What a book!
I thought the Dragon and the George was really awesome. The characters were great. A great sequel to the Dragon Knight.

Have you ever wondered...
Dickson has developed a series of books that allows the reader of today to say what if...? This unique viewpoint allows for the writer to put a 21st century spin on a classic fantasy novel. Characters are real in a fatastic world. This particular book puts Jim the Dragon Knight in the world of King Arthur.

An enjoyable read.

My new favorite of the series
This is a new adventure that differs greatly from the rest in the series. Even if you have disliked the rest of the series you will surely enjoy this one. The dragon knight returns to Lyonesse but has a completely different battle at hand. What makes this book so exciting is the involvement of the real knights of old like Pellinor, Galahad, and more. This excellent book involves Jim, Daffyd, Brian, and Hob of the main characters but even better is the involment from the Arthurian knights. The story goes that Jim has once again become involved in a battle with the dark powers. The difference is that the dark powers have also recruted some of those from the Arthurian legend. This book is sure to please any who has read this far into the series and even those who just want to read this single book. Dickson has written a standout book in his famous series and this is deffinatly it.

What fun! Things are starting to move!
A lot of people seem to have some problem with this book, but frankly, I thought it was a change of pace. Jim is still utterly himself, but he's starting to get comfortable with who and what he is. He came in contact with the greatest knights of all time, and held his own by doing things on his own terms. What I'm looking forward to is how he handles the greatest challenge of all - fatherhood. I can't wait to see how Dickson has his dragon knight cope with being "Daddy" to his adopted mideveil son. I'm sure both author and character will rise to the occaision.

Manifesto for a New Medicine: Your Guide to Healing Partnerships and the Wise Use of Alternative Therapies

Absolute fraud
Gordon's book, "Manifesto for a New Medicine," finds no reason to doubt any alternative therapy. My personal favorite is his discovery that hypnosis can "cure warts, and increase breast size." (from Bob Park of American Physical Society).

Just seek proper medical attention. The complementary/alternative medicine craze will die inevitably, as the fact that it is useless becomes undeniable. There is no evidence that any of these therapies are helpful, and they may even be harmful.

Useful and informative book from highly-regarded authority
Jim Gordon's book is useful for those looking for a complement or alternative to traditional western medical practice. Appointed by President Clinton to chair the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy, he is considered an authoritative figure in the field.

As more and more people become disenchanted with the limitations of "western" medical practice, the need for accurate information on the myriad of non-traditional medical options will become more important. The statement of the first commentator above referring to alternative medical care as a "fad" and a Gordon as a "fraud" is typical of the unwillingness of the medical establishment to even consider non-traditional medical practices, many of which do have academic research to back them up, particularly as preventitive measures. But you can't blame the medical establishment, including the drug companies, for not wanting to rock their multi-billion dollar boat. After all, there is a lot more money to be made in expensive treatments, such as chemotherapy, surgery, and patentable drugs, than in affordable and natural preventetive methods which intergrate and emphasise lifestyle prevention such as good nutrition and stress management.

It is for those whom the established medical techniques have been a failure that Manifesto for New Medicine will be most insightful.

Thoughs For Our Futures As Better Healthcare Consumers
Dr.Gordon's book was referred to me by a Ph.D. in genetics, the second woman to present at the Sorbonne. Mdme. Curie was first! At the time I just beginning my battle with breast cancer, and frustrated trying to acquire a competent, purposeful, ethical, and loving team, willing to accept me as an equal member! That was four books ago -I've loaned them out and somehow they seem to adsorb into the bodies and minds of those to whom I loaned them. They have not been returned; however, I have decided they should have been a gift to begin with.

Dr. Gordon's thorough and conscientious review of the different modalities available to increase, intensify, complement, and/or impact on the mind-body connection is comfortable reading. There is no question that in this book the doctor is paving the way for the the long overdue paradigm shift in medicine: the male medical model. A model that has been said will change for at lest the last forty years, and it hasn't budged, except in area where there has been strong public input, and therefore supported the initiation of the manifesto for a new medicine. This was especially apparent in from 1960-1974 when parents fought and organized for family-centered maternity and child care: human childbirth experiences with a prepared couple;husband attending the birth; family reunion post partem, including the mother's other children. The first excellent model of this was at Kaiser in California, which in the 70s had a central nursery so parents could have their babies in their room all they wanted or leave them to the safety of the nursing staff. Of course, the Mennonite hospital in Kansas had been doing this for 100 years! But, it took the public to bring this to an everyday option; not that the applied science of obstetrics has improved incrementally, (though technologically lives may be saves more easily) because parents both knew what was suppposed to happen, prepared to participate.

One must think, and feel strongly enough about the new medicine Dr. Gordon is writing about, and/or get an advocate to help them to seek and demand a partnership in their care, the health care "system" we have today can only decline further.

In the end, we are all patients. There is technology and treatments available now to cure! And, as Dr. Godon emphasizes complementary alternatives that individuals, find effective.

Dr. Gordon's book takes one to a new level of consciousness, and is a must in everyone's personal library, and reading clubs!
