Another nice book at the Wake
Good essays on "Finnegans Wake," clearly written and useful. Kind of like Tindall's books on Joyce in that its meant to encourage you to plow through "FW" and not be cowed by the prospect. Enjoy.

Abrams Publishing House is the only great art publisher.
This book is a treasure; it is a rare sight to see an art book that faithfully reproduces works, some of which I have personally seen. Gary is a consummate watercolor artist, respectful of his medium and subjects; this is beautifully captured by the incredible color photography and the intelligent, inspired comments by Judith Gordon, This book is a treat for anyone who loves flowers and admires artistic talent...I wish I could find the words...

A highly useful guide for the casual entomologist
This title is actually one of the earliest in a very successful list of Golden Guides. It quickly brings the reader up to speed on the subject of insects in general and proceeds to lure him onward with fascinating information about each of the referenced insects in turn. When I arrived in New England, after an early childhood of city dwelling, my forays into woods and field, guidebook in hand, were some of the most educational times of my young life. I still have my original, ragged, copy of "American Insects" and treasure it.

Great beauty
What an exquisite book! Not only is it an informative and interesting read, but it made me want to move to Taos and take up oil painting! In fact, I'm signing up for painting classes this week! The plates are magnificent, and the subject matter, Taos, and Taos Pueblo Indians, are filled with beauty and dignity from a time gone by. Highly recommended for all lovers of the Southwest, native cultures, and landscape and oil paintings.

Best commentary I've read.
The Book of James is certainly a tough one, but Keddie's commentary makes it all clear. He quotes Thomas Manton frequently. Of about 12 commentaries I've read on four different books of the Bible, icluding two others on James, this is without a doubt the best. My wife has read it as well, and also liked it.

A Private Life of Henry James: Two Women and His Art

Superb book on the great Henry James
This absorbing book tells the story of Henry James' friendships with Minnie Temple and Constance Fenimore Woolson. Minnie inspired James to create the characters of Isabel Archer, the heroine of The Portrait of a Lady, and of Milly Theale, the heroine of The Wings of the Dove.

Both Minnie and Constance looked to James for more than he was prepared to give. He drew them into communion, then left them exposed when he withdrew into the sanctuary of his writing. Minnie died of tuberculosis in 1870 at the age of 25, after James rejected her pleas for a closer relationship; her consequent loss of morale accelerated her death. After fifteen years of friendship with James, Constance killed herself in 1894 at the age of 52. Their tragic deaths spurred his creativity.

James' greatest achievements depended on their generosity: the idea of the solitary genius is just a myth: genius cannot emerge in a void. He paid them the supreme artistic tribute of portraying them forever as heroines, but he paid them too little attention as real women. He rejected what few but he knew that they offered. He understood the claims that they made on life, but would not, could not, meet them. James' visionary moralism was born of his 'merciless clairvoyance'.

These two wonderful independent-minded women provoked James' creative attention; they figured for him creative possibilities that he celebrated in his greatest fiction. They enabled him to understand a woman's point of view, a perspective that became central to his art. Like George Eliot and Charles Dickens, James exposed the social corruption and moral bankruptcy of the bourgeois men and women of his time. But only James and Eliot, with Dorothea Brooke in Middlemarch and Gwendolen Harleth in Daniel Deronda, created heroines who transcended the limits of their society. In each of these novels, the heroine's integrity and altruism rise above the bullying interference and interests of others.

Important essays on English teaching by one of the giants
This is an important collection of essays as Britton reflects on the work of four decades in the forefront of English teaching. The place of literature; what constitutes subject English, the and the Language/Writing across the Curriculum movement - Britton was there in practice and theory. His longitudinal research on the development of writing abilities in secondary school remains seminal. The work of James Britton is one of the foundation stones of English teaching in schools. His essays are humane, wise and most accesible.

-Very- highly recommended
Representations and characters of finite groups are a classical subject, with substantial developments well underway a century ago. As a result there has been gradual refinement and polishing of the field. The beauty of this subject is shown well in this book. The style is clear and order of exposition excellent. Moreover, the authors write with great patience, both in respect to presenting calculations in detail and in providing the steps to proofs. This is not to say the book is easy, but rather that the distance from step to step is very well suited for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. The book is highly mathematical in its outlook, except for the final chapter, which deals with normal modes of vibration of a molecule. There are some real gems. In a certain finite group, is it possible to find an element of order two and one of order four whose product has order three? The answer may be found in the chapter, "An Application to Group Theory." The presentation of the Frobenius Reciprocity Theorem is a exceptional delight. As for prerequisites, a good grounding in general group theory at an undergraduate level and a reasonably good acquaintance with rings and modules should suffice.
