A true children's treasure
My 3 1/2 year old daughter LOVES this book. I hate to give away the last page, but my little girl can hardly contain herself waiting for the last bug, the Sopranosaurus. She pushes the magic button again and again. We love ALL of David Carter's bug books!

Cute critters
A fabulous book. Very creative/inventive, it was the big hit of the 2 year old's Christmas gift hoard.

Baby's favorite!
We received this book as a shower gift. It has become the all-time favorite toy for our 11 month old daughter. Forget bonding with stuffed animals-she just wants to look at this book! She squeals with delight everytime she sees the cover and NEVER tires of looking at the whimsical, bright pictures. On the last page she looks up at me to see if I am laughing with her at the funny last critter. Every time, it is so cute! I am giving this book out at every shower I go to.

a well-organized introduction to policy studies
Weimer's "Policy Analysis -3rd edition" provides a well-organized, widely-covered, and easily-understandable introduction to policy analysis. Although we have to seek for other materials for an in-depth analysis of some topics, the book helps us start with Public Policy, Policy Analysis, and even economic policies. This is especially good for undergraduate level, since this provides how to study, investigate, and write policy paper.

Great overview of policy analysis
I read this book for a class and it gives a fantastic overview of the basics of policy analysis. It discusses the reasons for government intervention in markets, the analysis of policies and ways of going about doing a thorough policy analysis. Easy to read and very informative!

essential book for anyone studying economics/public policy
I found this book by accident! And it saved my (academic) life, by giving me a clear, economics-grounded understanding of: -why markets fail -why governments fail too -what the alternatives are for correcting those failures (policy options) -how to do a cost/benefit analysis of the different policy options -how to structure a policy analysis -how to write it up and present it in a way that makes things happen.

Whether you work for an advocacy organization, a politician, a government agency, a corporation, or are simply interested in better understanding why governments intervene in the 'free market', this book will be a great help to you, too!

Very informative, didn't want to put it down
After picking this book up at a Sam's club out of curiosity I found that I couldn't put it down and ended up putting it in the cart. My companion is a begining Astronomy buff and he couldn't get enough eighther. We were reading it to each other and trying to read it at the same time. We have learned alot from this book and have put it to good use with his new telescope. I highly remommed this book to the person who has always wanted to get started in astronomy!

A Best Buy - But Beware! It's a Repeat
This beautifully produced book is a superb addition to the library of any backyard astronomer or anyone from eight to eighty. It's a best buy for several reasons.
The first is its outstanding quality. The second is the BEWARE!.
This book is actually a softcover, otherwise identical reprint of "Advanced Skywatching", ISBN: 0783549415, published in 1997, also by Time-Life.
Perhaps Time-Life used this subterfuge to catch unwary on-line shoppers that already own "Advanced Skywatching" (as I do), since you can't view the contents on-line to discover you already own the same book under a different name.

The complaint on the star charts about this book (or its twin) not covering the entire sky is not critical.
There isn't room on anyone's bookshelf for all the possible fun sky-hops, of which this book and its twin present abundant excellent examples. There are more and different, also challenging and instructive ones in another fine volume, "Turn Left at Orion", and many others.

Not to worry if you get sucked in. This one makes a fine gift for your favorite grandchild as mine will.
Add this to your "must have" list if you don't already own its twin. If you do, buy it anyhow and give it to someone special.
The price is astonishingly low for the fine content.

Exceptionally helpful
While the previous reviewer is correct, that Strauss's "history of political philosophy" is more in-depth, one benefit of this book is its lack of a Straussian angle. Not that Strauss's views are bad or wrong, but it is a bias.

This work's sheer amount of entries is very useful. While some articles are somewhat brief, it is a good starting point for students of political philosophy. Done by among the best minds in the field, any political philosopher who wants to have a handy reference to terms and authors should order a copy of this book.

Very useful book
Very useful book for the students of political philosophy, together with Strauss' _History of Political Philosophy_, which is richer in content (but less entries). (^^;

One of the definitive volumes on northest mycoflora
MNNA is a very good book, and has the finest keys I have ever found in any work on mushrooms. However, I find its coverage of certain groups of fungi to be in want of more detail. For example, the avid Russula student will find that few species have been included. The book could use more information on various genera, especially those which are in need of detailed systematic analysis, and more comprehensive data on the taxonomy of included fungi, which has been very neglected. I hope that a future edition of this book may correct some of these problems. Nevertheless, I reccomend Mushrooms of Northeastern North America to all serious amateur mycologists, you will find it to be an indispensable reference.

A must have supplement!
Alan Bessette is truly a great contributor to the field of mycology. Mushrooms of Northeastern North America is a fantastic book on its way to being the "bible" to species in the Northeast. A huge undertaking, Bessette does his best with a dichotomist key arrangement, making narrowing down the possibilities easier. Although aided by Fischers photographs, this guide is tremendously lacking quality, well organized, photographic detail. This book is not for the novice, as familiarity with mycological terms is necessary. I'm waiting for a new, up-to-date, thicker volume: MONNA revised.

A cool mix
This is collection of short stories that offers a wide mix of speculative genres. Fantasy, SF, horror, and just plain weird. The stories run the gambit and most are good. "Jeo Defined" and "Moon Warrior" were excellent stories and well worth purchasing the book. Even just the so-so stories were enjoyable and all the authors are names to keep a look out for. In the end, this is a book of up and coming writers and a few of them will no doubt be big names someday.

A Great Read
I didn't know what to expect from this collection of short stories but I was happily surprised. The stories cover a wide range from fantasy, science fiction, and horror to those hard to classify strange stories. Each one is worth reading. My favorites were the one about a radio personality who was singing the Siren's song and the one about a criminal who is forced to undergo "augmentation" to control him. Some wild stuff for a great read.

a valuable tool for Greek students
New Testament Textual Criticism: A Concise Guide, written by David Alan Black, is indeed what the title details. Written compactly and with little frivolous information, David Black gives not only the experienced, but also the novice greek student a solid foundation upon which to base a practice of textual criticism. A unique feature in this remarkably short work, the material given is contained as much in appendixed form and bibliographical information as in traditional text. A wonderful guide for further scholarship, the author entices the reader to further explore the original text of the New Testament.

If you don't know anything, you can certainly start here.
What is textual criticism? Why is it necessary? How should it be done? At eighty pages (of large type), Black's introduction to New Testament textual criticism can be read in a single sitting and provides answers to these questions.

Black introduces the reader (any reader) to the various manuscripts underlying the New Testament and presents the different perspectives on textual criticism. As stated in the preface, "this volume attempts to make the findings of scholarship accessible to a wide readership. Nothing in this book is taken for granted. Every term, every problem, is explained clearly, concisely, and 'from scratch'." I certainly found this to be true. The first two chapters discuss the need for textual criticism and the different approaches to the task. The final chapter provides a few examples to help the reader understand some of the issues faced by textual critics as they try to determine the original Greek text behind the New Testament. The bibliography gives you a number of additional reading suggestions to move beyond "A Concise Guide".

If you are simply a lay person as I am, reading this book will allow you to have a better understanding of why some Bibles occassionally offer footnotes containing alternate translations. Black's book will also give you a better understanding of the history behind the New Testament scriptures and how they have been preserved from the apostles' time to our own. If there is a drawback to the book, it would probably be that you may find the price to be a bit high for such a short book.

If you don't want to go any further than an introductory understanding of textual criticism, then this is probably a great book for you. (The author also suggests that it could be useful as a "refresher" for those already familiar with textual criticism.) If you are looking to get involved in a more thorough understanding of the debated approaches to textual criticism, there are likely other books out there that would better satisfy that desire - though they are probably not concise introductions.

a useful supplement
I prefer William Mounce's "The Basics of Biblical Greek" to this grammar by David Alan Black as a first choice for those beginning to learn Biblical Greek; but...

This book has more than a few areas where it deals with its material in a way that is different from (and in some cases superior to) that of Mounce. The preposition section on particular is wonderful.

I highly recommend this text as a supplement to that of Mounce.

Excellent Introduction to New Testament Greek
As a first year Greek student, I found Mounce's large tome on Introductory Greek, with its verbosity and endless depth, to be extremely intimidating. In my opinion, Black avoids such stumbling blocks for the new Greek student, while offering many outlets and resources for the more advanced student as well. Although there were several places in which my own brilliant Greek professor (Dr. Roy Metts) had to adjust and/or replace Black's instruction (e.g., Black's classification system for Third Declension Nouns is somewhat cumbersome), my opinion of this text remains positive and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning the basics of biblical Greek.
(P.S. Broadman and Holman's printing company did a terrible job in the binding of this book. Almost everyone I know who owns this book has had the pages separate from the binding within a few months. Be prepared to glue it back together!)

Clear, thorough introductory textbook
Excellent resource for personal study or classroom instruction in the elements of NT Greek. The author's presentation is very clear, with explanations that will make the grammar easy to understand even for those with little background in the subject.

Very good 2nd year book
Black helps make the nuances of syntax easier to understand with this concise book. Chapters are well ordered and written in such a way that makes it clear to the reader with some Greek background the true meaning of Greek texts. This book even helped me with English grammar. Well worth the buy.

Good 2nd year text for NT Greek
Great for an intermediate text book on NT Greek.

David Black has a relaxed style and uses some terrible puns, all of which goes to making a complex subject easier to learn.

He covers topics in sufficient depth - and avoids getting bogged down in detail. Every category is backed up with examples from the Greek NT, which is very useful.

I found the chapters on infinitives and participles and clauses especially helpful and worthwhile.

Greek made easier
Black's book makes Greek easier for the struggling student. It explains the whys and wherefores of Greek in detail. It not only defines terms, but it gives examples from Scripture, so that the student can know how these grammatical functions work in the text.

A Great Find
I was in the TCU Book store and Mr. Hall just happen to be doing a book signing, I ordered the book about a week later, I don't usually read novels. This book keep my attention all the way from cover to cover. A very pleasant surprise.

Great book - great read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a great story which kept me completely absorbed throughout. Mr Hall did an amazing job of weaving action, adventure, espionage, technical innovations, philosophy, politics...all into one package.

What A Book!
A friend told me about this novel and I picked it up. Once I did, I couldn't put it down. It made me see the world in a way I never have before, and I loved it. I have never read an action adventure novel that made me think so much before, and I still can't get it out of my mind. What a head trip! Buy it! Read it! Try to think the same old way. You won't be able to.
