How To Create A Media Conglomerate From Scratch!
Many have watched with dismay as conglomerates have gobbled up an increasing number of media companies. This collaborative effort between the New Press and New York University's (NYU) Departments of Culture and Communications, Education, and Journalism addresses that concern. Experts ranging from practitioners to academics were invited to participate in a lecture series hosted by NYU in 1996. Edited versions of their talks appear in this volume. An introduction by media scholar Todd Gitlin is followed by nine individually authored chapters covering media activities from radio and television to newspapers and book publishing. Surveying changes in telecommunications, Aufderheide (communication, American Univ.) calls for public vigilance and a middle ground between the apocalyptic doomsayers and those who believe the new age of communication has dawned. This book will be of value to media scholars as well as to citizens following this issue.

How To Create A Media Conglomerate From Scratch

This book is quite insightful, especially for a Southeast Asian media professional like myself. I recommend this book to everyone, even to those who work in the upper regions of the power sturcture of the media conglomerates critiqued in the collection.

For starters, it is a wonderful overview of how the media economy is shifting all over the world. The US market is saturated, as the book said, and the rest of the world is ripe for picking, especially my country, the Philippines.

This book is a tool to launch our own media analysis of what's happenning in our own countries. And from an analysis, we launch a critique, and from a critique, we launch steps to face the situation.

This book, published by New Media, is invaluable. I first read about it in an issue of Utne Reader. I took down the title and hunted it down in Amazon. I found it, bought it, and consumed it. I loved it because it gave me useful insights to work with.

This is a book I will dog-ear in my attempts to understand what to do in my field, and how to start my own media conglomerate from scratch. I already have my ideas, which I hope aren't just soundbites in my head.

Essays providing insight into a growing area of concern.
It is difficult to read Conglomerates and not be alarmed at the growing media control by a few major companies. The book begins with an insightful introduction by noted scholar Todd Gitlin and includes essays from Mark Crispin Miller (Johns Hopkins scholar and author of Boxed In) and David Leiberman (USA Today), among other prominent writers. One discrepency occurs with Lieberman's piece: it is listed in the table of contents as "Conglomerates, News, and Children", but in the chapter it is referred to as "Conglomerates, News, and the Media," leaving the reader to decide the correct version. This book is a must have if you want to gain an understanding of what's happening with media monopolies; Bagdikian fans rejoice! However, it is not chalk full o' references, so students looking for cites to follow may be disappointed. In the introduction, Gitlin echos an earlier statement by Niel Postman (author of Amusing Ourselves to Death): "Big Brother isn't looming, Brave New World is."

Mark Gruhin Chapter Fantastic!
This is an excellent book with an extremely insightful and fascinating chapter written by Mark I. Gruhin. He is a very skilled writer and lawyer, and I look forward to his future writings.

Great Book-Very Interesting....
Being a lawyer in NYC, I was very impressed with some Inside the Minds: Interne Lawyers. Although it is impossible to cover every Internet related topic, the book does a good job at covering some very interesting topics. In addition, the individuals portrayed in the book represent a good cross sampling of different talents related to Internet law. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Mark Fischer at Palmer & Dodge. If you are a woman, make sure to also check out Inside the Minds: Leading Women.

The World Series
There are only two sad aspects about The World Series: Complete play-by-play of every game 1903-1989. First, it does not include pitch-by-pitch accounts of every game, and second, it has not been updated since the 1989 World Series. But, for its time, it is a masterful work. Even before interest in play-by-play accounts of games made their way to the internet, Neft & Cohen go into great detail of each individual Series game. Want to know who the first batter and pitcher to appear in a series were? (Pitcher: Cy Young, Boston; batter: Ginger Beaumont, Pittsburgh)? Need to know how many pitches Don Larsen threw in his 1956 no-no in game five (97) and who was the last man retired (Dale Mitchell, struck out looking)? Wondering who was on base when Carlton Fisk homer hit the foul pole in game six of the 1975 series (no one, he led off the bottom of the 12th)? Have a bet with a friend on who scored the winning run on Bill Buckner's error in the 10th inning of game six of the 1986 series (Ray Knight)? It's all here, with recaps, box scores and composite statistics from every series. The only thing better than this book for tracking the series would be an update. Hopefully, one will be on the way within my lifetime.

The best World Series reference book I have ever seen!
Play by play of each World Series game; including pitch by pitch of Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956. A must if you can find this book!

Absolutely a must for any baseball fan!
I have had this book since 1990. In the last 7 years, I have been able to visually recreate almost any series game. This is a valuable tool in my baseball library. If you are lucky enough to find one, buy it!

Unique in-depth account of every Series game -- essential
First published following the brilliant Reds-Red Sox Series of 1975, this book gives the play-by-play for every game of every World Series it covers. By elevating these games to such minute study, serious baseball fans can deconstruct strategies and performances for observations useful in many other contexts.

The Neft-Cohen team also puts together "Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball," which (with the Macmillan and Total Baseball series) is a cornerstone of baseball analysis. The only improvements that could be made: -- More pitch counts, for the recent Series for which these are available. -- Play-by-play for old League tie-breaking playoffs (NL 46, 59 and 62; AL 48; AL East 78; NL West 80).

For anyone who enjoys APBA and its recreating of old World Series, this is a must.

An Extremely High Quality Book
It seems to me that few have seen the remarkable works of this master painter. If you haven't you're missing out. I had to write a review of this book, because no one has yet, and I wanted to express what an amazing job the Publishers did. This book shows Nevinson's work in great detail and has some of the highest quality pictures of his paintings I have ever seen. Nevinson paints some of the most visually stunning pictures of World War I. They are violent and vivid, full of energy and color...Groetesque and romantic all the same. Give these publishers (and Nevinson) some credit and ~BUY THIS BOOK~

Social Science at its best
The culture of honor is a fascinating look at the role that cultural traditions can play in determining the incidence of homocide and other forms of violence. What I liked most about the book was the way Nisbett and Cohen used all the tools of social science, from survey and archival research to clever laboratory experiments to test their thesis. The way in which they "broke down" their data was particularly convincing. For instance they showed that where cultural influences were strongest(for example, in small towns rather than big cities)the North-South differences in homocide rates were greatest.While there were a lot of statistical tables and graphs, the book was easy and entertaining to read. I would especially recommend it for people who are interested in understanding about regional differences in American ideas about taking the law into your own hands, and for undergraduates who want to get a good look at the way social scientists can tackle complicated questions.

AN AMAZING BOOK!
this book helped me to understand the meaning of avant-garde, and help push towards improving my knowledge of cultures which are unknown to many. if you want to spend that much money on a book then go ahead and get it, ASAP!

This book is remarkable for its fluidity and erudition.
This book occupies a much-ignored aspect of early modern Jewish culture: images. The complex relationship between the images presented by art and historical reality is addressed in this complex, subtle, and beautifully-written book.

A good book
It is a good book for both new and experienced researcher in biosciences. Reading this book had exposed me to many areas and important findings related to biotechnology. And had been the first reference for me when I faced many difficult problems.

An Intriguing Novel
This intriguing novel (that looks into the lives of some very complex people) begins in the 1930's in New England. The author doesn't spend a lot of time in the first chapter describing the characters or the setting, but instead in a few opening paragraphs, he pulls you in, holds your attention and doesn't let you go until the very last sentence and then you are sorry that it has ended. I found 'Monday' engrossing, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable.
