I'm outraged!
First of all, shame on the women who gave this book glowing reviews on the first few pages! I was completely shocked (had to re-read the passages several times) by the authors suggestion that a woman who was sexually approached by a co-worker basicallly overreacted by becoming angry, and that she should have instead interpreted the pass as his awkward attempt to "find some way to connect with her. Might she have deflected the pass but turned the attempt into something more suitable to a collegial work relationship?"(page126) Give me a break! I can't believe that this example of gaining influence over people ever made it past the editor. And if that wasn't bad enough, they again insulted women on page 226, when they explain that a women ponders her failure in a management role by saying "I still haven't figured out why they allowed a female - especially one without an engineering background - to manage the project". What?!? I had to check the front of the book to see if it was published in the 60s! Besides these profoundly ignorant examples, I found the book to be less than marginal in developing my ability to influence those around me. I'll look elsewhere.

Good info on how to be effective in team-based organizations
This book covers how to use the natural human laws of reciprocity with others in your organization to achieve maximum productivity. More importantly the book also promotes the attitude of looking on everyone in your organization as allies (people you like) and potential allies (people you don't). Highly recommended.

ugh!
This book is one of the worst business books I have ever read. The authors are clearly on the gravy train trying to sweep up some more consultancy dollars.

This book basically breaks leadership up into two schools, the heroic school and the post-heroic school. The way it works is really simple. Anything bad, belongs in the heroic school, and anything good is post-heroic! WOW! This book is very one-sided and does not even try to entertain the notion that the most effective style of leadership can vary depending upon the situation. It continuously hammers home a certain style of leadership never exploring the situations where different approaches are effective.

I strongly recommend that if one wants to learn and think about leadership, read about leaders!....and by the way, the kind of leaders that we all admire do not even fit into this post-heroic category! This idealistic kind of approach recommended by academics lacks practical real-world substance, and only has value in a classroom.

I am considering using this book to prop up my dining table!

Can't be this simple?
The authors make the impossible seem very possible in this excellent book. The differences between heroic and post-heroic leadership is well defined through stories involving real people. Can an organization switch from heroic to post-heroic leadership, sure, but it is not easy. Somehow this book and its ideas make that ideal a bit more reasonable. Only for managers and leaders who are ready to go out on a limb and turn everything they thought they knew upside down. Good luck.

College Algebra
Published in Hardcover by West Wadsworth (1999)
Authors: David Cohen and Marshall
Amazon base price: $49.00
Used price: $9.31

I cannot believe how much I paid for this book!
Sullivan's "College Algebra" is a mish-mash of material, very little of which has any relevance to the questions at the end of each section. I am extremely upset that my university changed to this text, as it is vastly inferior to our previous book. There are no examples of key points that are needed to complete homework. What explanations that are available are hard to decipher, much less understand. This text should not be allowed to be used in any classroom, college or high school.

A good start...
This book covers algebra very well. It is a simple, easy to understand text that most students seem to be able to grasp. It's main attribute is that it treats college algebra simply and does not scare students away. This book is also a good place to start if you are attempting to self teach.

awesome service
order was not shipped the same day, so seller gave me a discount and I still received the book pretty quick. Great customer service. The book is in mint condition.

The American Pageant Guidebook: A Manual for Students
Published in Paperback by D C Heath & Co (1999)
Authors: Thomas A. Bailey, David M. Kennedy, Lizabeth Cohen, and Mel Piehl
Amazon base price: $29.26
Average review score:

terrible
there is no outline and there are no answers to the multiple choice questions

alright, but does not go into enought depth
I ordered this book, and thought I would not have to read the text, but I was unprepared for the class. I also did not need the busy-work portions of the book.

A Teacher's Perspective
The Guidebook is not a substitute for the text, but it is not designed to be. It is a good resource for those looking for review materials to help them in a course in which American Pageant is the primary text.

Very Very Light Reading
There is not much substance in this book for anyone really interested in thrills or chills. Might be good to passify your very young child for a few days, but that's about it. It leaves you wanting more information and more facts.

Reader's Digest Bible
Cohen has essentially edited the bible to a reader's digest type form. This does make it easy to read all the best-known bible stories quickly, but it also robs the bible of most of its granduer, poetry, force, and chill-producing effect. Just take the time to read the real thing instead.

Precalculus: A Problems-Oriented Approach
Published in Hardcover by West Information Pub Group (1993)
Authors: David C. Cohen and Marshall
Amazon base price: $62.50
Used price: $4.62
Average review score:

Clear, yet Strangely Incoherent
David Cohen does an excellent job in the individual chapters explaining this or that component of precalculus. But the book as a whole is strangely incoherent. The order of the chapters seems almost random, as the book jumps from topic to disconnected topic. For example, we are given a clear account of how to work matrices...and then are never told or shown WHY we bothered learning it in the first place--we're hustled off to another unrelated topic. So-called theorists in our fad-ridden education departments call this technique "spiraling," a tactic designed to keep the little kiddies on their toes and off balance and thus more receptive to exploring new things. Or something like that. In actual practice, however, as well as according to common sense, the result of "spiraling" is only frustration and confusion. If Cohen would rearrange the order of the chapters and provide some connective tissue, this would probably make it a really good textbook.

Song of the Zubble-Wump (The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss)
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (1997)
Authors: Seuss, David Steven Cohen, Tom Brannon, Tish Rabe, and Dr Seuss
Amazon base price: $10.99
Average review score:

Rip-off
Although Amazon has listed Dr. Seuss as one of the authors of this book, he is not!

Instead, the other authors/illustrator are attempting to boost their sales by stealing some of Seuss's characters--the Cat in the Hat, Horton the elephant, and the Grinch.

This plodding, predictable story totally lacks the wild plot twists and off-the-wall craziness of true Seuss. The trouble-making Cat in the Hat is transformed into a bland voice of authority lecturing about the importance of sharing. Evidently the authors haven't read "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", or they would know that the Grinch reformed at the end and is not the incorrigible villain he is depicted as in this book. Even the artwork is not a convincing imitation of Seuss, lacking the bold black ink strokes and wild details. The new characters in the book, Megan Mullally and her grandfather, look like Muppets rather than Seuss characters.

Get a *real* Dr. Seuss book.

Psychological Jibber-Jabber
If you are a psychologist you might find this book interesting. Keyword on MIGHT.... it is very bland and the grammar of the English is like a first grader. I was dissapointed by this book. An example of what was discussed was that people want money because when they are babies they suck and ... and become anal retentive. If that kind of information does you good, then this is your book.
