A good book
It is a good book for both new and experienced researcher in biosciences. Reading this book had exposed me to many areas and important findings related to biotechnology. And had been the first reference for me when I faced many difficult problems.

An excellent book to collect.

A Collector's Delight
I can recommmend this book in three ways-as a coffee table book, as a map collector's reference book, and as a history book. As a book out on your living room table, visitors will be sure to pick it up and review it. As a collector's reference it is wonderful. A good overview of various maps, some one of a kind, with a great writeup on each map and mapmaker. It may become a "reference" book, whereby the maps shown are more desirable to collectors simply because they are listed in "Cohen". Finaly, it is a great history book dealing with the exploration of America westward. Highly recommend to anyone interested in maps and mapping, or in American history.

50 Phil Ochs Fans Can't Be Wrong!
If you're a fan of Phil Ochs, the quintessential singer-songwriter of the 1960's, you need this book!

In an obvious labor of love, David Cohen has assembled a complete bibliography of writings by Phil Ochs, writings about Phil, a complete discography of Phil's recordings, a detailed listing of all known audio tapes of Phil's performances, a listing of all of Phil's known concert performances, a detailed listing of all of Phil's known television appearances, and a comprehensive listing of all of Phil's known songs (including covers of Phil's songs performed by other artists), etc. Cohen had access to the personal archives of Phil's family in preparing this book.

The icing on the cake is Cohen's brief biographical sketch of Phil's life.

The best math book I've seen--period.
This is THE math book for those preparing for the calculus or (like me) revisiting the subject. The book is clear, concise, and stands up well to heavy use. Additionally, the book has tons of examples; contains sections A & B for each chapter. The 'A' section is all that is necessary to continue to calculus, but 'B' will enhance learning if you choose to delve deeper. The study guide that accompanies the book is absolutely excellent--an average student like me can go through the whole book without an instructor if aided by the study guide.

Excuse the 5-star ranking - this is my book
My name is David Cohen. I wrote this book. I hope that anyone with an interest in the history of pro football, particularly fans of the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns, will give this book a look.

It focuses on the seasons from 1946 to 1950 when the Eagles and Browns - who were in different leagues until 1950 - were the world's two best football teams. I was able to talk to or correspond with dozens of old players, from Hall of Famers like Otto Graham, Chuck Bednarik, Steve Van Buren, Lou Groza and Crazy Legs Hirsch to guys who only had a cup of coffee in the NFL; much of what they had to say is woven into my narrative. I wanted to share their stories and bring those years to life again.

Captivating stories from a First Amendment warrior.
What is clear from the accounts of Garbus' battles for freedom of speech is that the struggle to be free or to remain free will never end. Garbus also shows how one person (or a few) can make a huge difference in the free society we enjoy today. The book portrays many heros, several scoundrals, and events in the past that all jump off the page in a new light. I've added Martin Garbus to my top-ten list of people I would most like to have dinner with because I'd like to find out much more about his exploits in defending our right to hear and read anything others have to say.

Focuses on the people of Africa
I enjoyed A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AFRICA because it focuses on the people, the individuals, who live in this great continent. The African landscape is so awesome that the citizens are often given a backseat to the natural wonders they live among. Where photo essays do depict the people of Africa, they often fall into one of two categories: 1) the beautiful peoples of the ethnic groups that are still holding on to their ancient traditions, 2) those suffering from starvation or AIDS. These two groups are certain represented in A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AFRICA, but they share the pages with men in business suits walking down modern streets, school children playing during recess, actors on the set of a television production, and ladies having tea in a fashionable restaurant.

I would recommend this book to any fan of the "A Day In The Life Of ..." series, or to anyone interested in Africa.

One of the best "Day in the Life" books ever
The scope of this book is amazing! It's the huge continent in a large, colorful nutshell, covering the wide variety of life and people in the fascinating world of Africa. The photographs are beautiful and respectful to a dignified people. I found myself reading all the captions, which are full of interesting and concise information. You'll want to set aside enough time to read as well as look at the photos. I hope there are profits galore from this book to support the fight against AIDS in Africa.

A Different Take on Africa
After seeing Africa endlessly portrayed in the media either as a giant game park or a perpetual disaster area, I was pleased that A Day in the Life of Africa continues to do what this photo-book series has been doing... quite excellently... for 20 years. It employs the world's top photogs to shoot extraordinary pictures of everyday events all across Africa and all on one day. There are some amazing shots in this book. Highly recommended... and the profits fund AIDS programs in Africa. Also, one of my friends was a photographer on this project and word is, that this book was printed in very limited quantities and will be out of stock long before Christmas. Buy now.

What did you expect??
(...) the children were the BEST part. Isn't it obvious by the book jacket that this is a story about a FAMILY's adventures? Written first person by the Dad, it can only have his perspectives and thoughts, with Devi's and the kids' interjecting every so often. I am amused by their antics and the sibling rivalry is definitely true to life. (Don't) forget that David's purpose to take this trip was NOT to research a book, but to spend time on an adventure with his family, which he does to (most of) our delight. If he had spent more time polishing this book on the journey, I'm certain his joy with the family would have suffered, and I am happy to read the entertainment that he spins for us.

Definitely read the book. It's fun, a good read, filled with a couple of practical tidbits (tricks and bribes =)) here and there about travelling with your family. When I have kids I'll definitely do the same, even if they don't appreciate it yet!!

One of the most enjoyable books I've ever read!
I don't know when I have enjoyed a book so much!! David Cohen and his lovely wife have my admiration for all the planning and effort that it took to put this project into effect and see it though. Taking three small children on a journey around the world would be a feat in inself, but for an entire year is something else. This book made a big hit with my entire family. My mother plans to review it for her book club next month and I was elated when my busy executive brother from Houston had a good time reading it during a recent visit. My congratulations to David Cohen for the humorous way in which he expresses himself and for sharing this fascinating journey with all of us.

I enjoyed this book more than if I had gone with my own kids
One Year Off is a wonderful read -- a hilarious romp around the world with the author and his family. What parent wouldn't relate to the picky eater, the drama princess, the baby smearing ketchup on a stranger's linen suit in France? I enjoyed this book much MORE than if I had taken my own family, since, like one of the author's friends, this venture -- at least with my four children -- would be my idea of hell. The writing is conversational yet succinct. The places and events Cohen describes are at various times amusing, terrifying, poignant. I am planning to give this book to friends for Channukah, Christmas, Kwaanza, etc. READ IT! p.s. Those reviewers who have complained that the book is "self-serving" should know from the subtitle, cover and intro that it is ABOUT a trip with family, by a man approaching a mid-life awakening. GET REAL!
