An Extremely High Quality Book
It seems to me that few have seen the remarkable works of this master painter. If you haven't you're missing out. I had to write a review of this book, because no one has yet, and I wanted to express what an amazing job the Publishers did. This book shows Nevinson's work in great detail and has some of the highest quality pictures of his paintings I have ever seen. Nevinson paints some of the most visually stunning pictures of World War I. They are violent and vivid, full of energy and color...Groetesque and romantic all the same. Give these publishers (and Nevinson) some credit and ~BUY THIS BOOK~

Stunning photography, great depth of feeling.
This book deals with "the big picture". I got a sense of viewing customs through time. The many cultures shown are contrasted in an exciting way. Stunning photographs showing rituals surrounding birth, death, marriage, etc. are accompanied by intelligent, inspiring copy. A beautiful and thought provoking book.

A peek into the last century
When this book's photos were being shot on June 8th, 1986, I was a boy in Soviet Union. The word "perestroika" was not yet invented, and the "iron curtain" was alive and well. Quite naturally, foreign countries seemed more like other planets to us then. Now I live in Canada, and what I find the most revelational about this book is that from today's viewpoint, Canada of 1986 was surprisingly more like the Soviet Union of the same time than it is like modern Canada or modern Russia. Cars, fashions, appliances, even people's smiles and expressions, let alone the book's design and print quality are all unmistakably the "deep into 1980s" style, and many things in the book look like they're from my own childhood. When you live through changes you tend to miss them, and it takes a book like this to remind you of how even the smallest things in life may change within a decade. These changes constitute the real history of our world, not the sequences of prime ministers or general secretaries. I'd highly recommend this book for its historical interest alone - and besides, it has some really great pictures, too.

The father's book
This was a fun book to read. Congratulations to Wiley for finding David Cohen to author this book. This book is part of a new series on Family Matters introduced by Wiley to highlight common topics relevant to the 21st century family.
David Cohen is a psychologist, writer and also film-maker, who has been involved with many interesting and funny projects. His PhD thesis, as an example of this, was on the subject on what makes children laugh. In this book he has used his talents as a reporter, a psychologist, an academic, as a father to two children and stepfather to another two. The book is very personal on his experiences and relationships to his parents, his ex-wife, present wife and children.
Every year around 120 million men become fathers, but very few were ever taught the profession of being fathers, because very few fathers tell their sons about this task. Men usually do not talk about these things and the author's father only told him two things, honour the mother of your children and send them to decent schools.
This book has 12 chapters, from the history of fathers (from Abraham to Woody Allen) to the new dependency paradox, where it seems that today's children are very reluctant to leave home. This is due to the harsh world out there with sky high rents, stress and why leave the nest, when the nest will provide you with food, drinks, computers, e-mail, emotional and financial support.
We recommend this book to both new and old fathers, you will have a good laugh, but it will also provide you with intelligent and relevant information for the task of being "a good enough father". .... .... .... .... .... ....

THE VERY BEST HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION...
Despite this book being written just shortly after the American Revolution, it is surprisingly modern in thought and attitude. It is also the very best book I've ever read on the American Revolution and really helped me to understand it much more clearly. Here is why I liked it: 1) Ramsay gives you a very clear and understandable situation of the colonies prior to the Revolution; it all now becomes crystal clear in the reader's ming; 2) he also gives you a very easy understanding of the events that led up to war and why they occurred; 3) he provides a good account of what our political leaders were doing during the war, and he provides an equally clear picture of the English king and politicians, especially the British Parliament; 4) he never says Benjamin Franklin but always Dr. Franklin, and makes you realize the power and respect that, may I say it, Ben Franklin had at the time both here and in England, making you wonder why he wasn't elected the first president; 5) he shows you the power of lawyers (no lawyer jokes here) and how, without them, we would never have gotten our independence; 6) he wonders about the same environmental problems we worry about today, causing the reader to feel he is ahead of his time, and, 7) most importantly, the accounts of battles, big and small, and especially how the civil population tolerated all this goings-on or opposed it... Despite some of his contemporaries saying Ramsay plagerized [sp] parts of the book, I really didn't care since it flows so well, presenting so clear a picture of events and an understanding of those events.

The Only Guide Of Its Kind On Australian Wildlife
As a wildlife photographer I was very keen to find out where were the easiest places in Australia to see wildlife. This was the only book I have been able to find of this kind. The guide lists the best locations to see wildlife by state, often with very specific details. It also provides a brief description of some of Australia's most popular wildlife and what are the hotspots for viewing that particular species. This guide is not designed to give detailed information on wildlife behavior or physical makeup, it is designed to tell you where you can see wildlife and it does that brilliantly!!

Long Steel Rail: The Railroad in American Folksong (Music in American Life)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (2000)
Authors: Norm Cohen and David Cohen
Amazon base price: $32.95
Average review score:

A scholarly examination of railroad folksongs in America.
While humming "The Wabash Cannonball," which remains a popular tune even today, have you ever wondered about the phrase "She's the wondrous combination called the Wabash Cannonball"? What in the world does "combination" mean? Apparently, it means nothing more than that someone (who may have been more familiar with songs than with railroads) misunderstood the meaning of the original words and wrote down the wrong word! Does it help to know that a very early version of the song went "She's the bo's [hobos'] accommodation called the Wabash Cannonball"? The train "accommodated" hobos by providing free, albeit unauthorized, transportation and at least temporary shelter from the elements. The song also derives from an even earlier one called "The Great Rock Island Route," has a number of mythical elements in the style of the Paul Bunyan legends, and speaks of "Daddy Claxton," who has yet to be identified with any historical character and who appears in other versions as Boston Blackey and even Long Slim Perkins!

The evolution of folksongs and their many variants is a fascinating study. Add to this the lure of the railroad, put it all together in a study of dozens of such songs, mix in a healthy dose of scholarly research, and we have Cohen's book. It is not a casual read, but it is invaluable for research into practically every American folksong involving railroads.

For everyone interested in the human aspects of railroad history, in railroad folklore, or in the evolution of the American folksong, this book is well worth the purchase price. That it is back in print and again readily available is a godsend to folklorists, musicologists, and railfans. If you missed the first printing, don't miss this one! Also, while you're browsing here, check out Katie Letcher Lyle's "Scalded to Death by the Steam," a highly readable examination of Appalachian songs inspired by disasters on the railroad.

Outstanding read for middle managers
This is a great book for people who've recently been promoted to a middle management position and/or who are struggling to get the most from their team. Unlike most management books, which always seem to be aimed at the CEO, this one targets the 2nd or 3rd level manager, who's trying to motivate a team of 25-60. Although it's based on a pretty simple concept (articulate a clear vision, let employees to share in the mgmt responsibility, and then focus your energies on developing their abilities to do so), it helped me a lot in realizing that by trying to coordinate and stay in control of everything going on in my group, I was actually stifling the creativity and motivation of my employees. By turning over more of the day-to-day responsibility to them, and focusing my energies on the broader vision, we'll all be a lot more successful. This book is loaded with a lot of great examples that helped me see that.
