Review of "Howlers"
Is an excellent synopsis (complete with colorful dialogue) of The X-Files episode "Unruhe". It's almost even scarier than the episode because sometimes you have to look over the words twice to truly understand what's going on. This is an excellent book on one of the best X-Files episodes.

a Nazarene book
This is a decent book for new Christians, although I've been a Christian for eight years and still don't understand the chapter on sanctification -- don't expect it to answer any questions for you! It would work good as a Bible study.

Jason and the Golden Fleece

The story of Jason and the Golden Fleece and its tragic end
In his retelling of the Greek myth of "Jason and the Golden Fleece," Leonard Everett Fisher also tells the grim aftermath of the tale that we know best from Euripides' tragic play "Medea." However, the story of how Jason's uncle Pelias came to be king of Iolcos is only briefly alluded to at the beginning. A map shows young readers the route of the Argonauts trip, from Iolcos to the island of Lemnos, through the Dardanelles, past the land of the Amazons to Colchis on the far shores of the Black Sea in Asia Minor. Fisher tells of how Jason gathered the famous Argonauts together and had adventures along their way to Colchis, such as the encounter with the Harpies. When the Argo arrives at Colchis, King Aetes gives Jason four impossible tasks to complete in order to win the Golden Fleece: "You shall have your golden fleece only after you yoke two fire-breathing bulls and plow a field. You must sow the furrows with dragon teeth from which will sprout an army that you must defeat--alone!" But the hero is aided by the king's daughter, the sorceress Medea, who has fallen in love with Jason. Fisher's illustrations are pastel drawings, all done as two-page illustrations, which work well for depicting the Argo and the Golden Fleece, but the dragon that Jason and Medea find guarding the Fleece is a rather friendly looking little fellow. What I appreciated the most is that Fisher does not back off what happened with Jason and Medea once they returned to Greece, although certainly young readers will find the book's conclusion to be as far removed from "living happily ever after" as a heroic tale can get, with Jason wandering Greece along and friendless (one ancient author says he was killed when the prow of the Argo fell off and struck him dead). Young readers will learn all of the fundamental elements of this classic myth, which should inspire them to seek other other tales and adventures from antiquity.

LOADED WITH WONDERFUL INFORMATION
I would highly recommend this book on John Everett Millais for anyone who has an interest in the life of this incredibly talented painter. From his early induction into the Royal Academy to his death, this book seems to uncover every aspect imaginable, be it good reviews or bad. I could not put it down. My only disappointment is that the photos of his work are all in black and white. I am not a scholar, but a layman with a keen interest in learning of the man behind such outstanding pieces as My First Sermon. I will read this book again and again, it is that interesting.

INTERESTING STORIES
Although 'Killer Weather' does not include any fascinating new information about America's meteorological disasters, it is worth reading anyway. One hears twelve chilling stories of death and survival involving hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. The best and longest chapter deals with the New England Hurricane of 1938, in which the author was an eyewitness.

Disasters included here are as follows: The New York Blizzard of '88, The Year Without a Summer, Galveston Hurricane, New England Storm of '38, Agnes, 1925 Midwest Tornado, Super-Outbreak of '74, Donnora Smog, Andrea Doria Collision, Big Blowup in Northwest, and finally the Dust Bowl and the Sahel Famine of the early 70's.

A useful, refence for quick, interesting political passages
The value of Ann Serow and Everett Ladd's work rests in the value of lofty ideas versus specific evidence. The editors have taken these extensive works and broken them down to the bare bones of the arguement, a formidable task for political figures such as V.O. Key, Alexis de Toqueville, and Jesse Ventura. The editors have done a fine job, not only in giving the authors' arguments concisely, but also in maintaining a rational flow to their arguements. The editors masterfully leave the background research to the political science student. The only problem with the book is that it the selections focus little on environmental politics, which is a field unjustly neglected by political science as a discipline, and in politics today. So in the realm of environmental awareness, unfortunately, editors make no strides forward.

Many-Worlds of Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (1973)
Authors: Bryce S. DeWitt, Hugh Everett, and Neill Graham
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

The break-through in the way of thinking about the world.
The Many Worlds Interpretation presented a new way of thinking about the universe. Encapsulating the most recent trends in physics it established the basis by which modern physicists could relate and understand the nature of reality.

This book represented the two principal schools of physics which existed at the time. One was the traditional school which dealt with a world of logical order (comparitively speaking). The other school consisted of the outsiders, new thinkers in the classical representation. They postulated an infinitiely growing universe of multiple universes, each universe bursting into existence based on decisions and actions in another. This concept was so radical that even today, many noted physicists dispute its credibility. I, on the other hand, find it impossible not to believe. To me, it is the only paradigm which works and it explains my own experiences and discoveries with great efficiency.

This book is one of those I continue to refer to, which paralleled and confirmed my own discoveries and which began a long, fascinating journey into the realm of theoretical physics. This book gets me going! Perry Jones

A Master's Guide to Building a Bamboo Fly Rod

Bible of bamboo rod building
Garrison's book is one of the seminal references for anyone who endevours to build bamboo fly rods. It's also a great read for anyone who enjoys cane rods. Though I may never have the chance to cast a Garrison, I've gained a much greater appreciation of the care and craftsmanship that he invested in each of his rods.

Plus, it's a nice green color and looks impressive on a bookshelf.

lovely pictures
Great reproductions: gorgeous glowing colours in all their glory. Plodding text, though. Some good scholarly work - and for the first time Millais' later paintings are being taken with the seriousness they deserve. But that's about it really. We still get told the ol' story for the most part.

Buy it for he pictures (well worth it), for the information (worth it), but not the ideas (there aren't that many).
