Very Insightful
Although a bit eccentric, this is a must read for all of you out there who want a new perspective on life. Still very interesting even if you just want a good read. I couldn't put it down the first time I read it. Some comments are a bit off-the-wall, but all in all a very good book.

Interesting and insightful reading
The book gives a very insightful look into why we have pain and why it's important for maintaining good health. I found it easy to read (I almost couldn't put it down!) and very informative. I think it's a must-read for anyone in the medical profession or anyone who suffers reccurent pain of any kind.

High praise for a refreshing insight.
As a clinician who works with chronic pain, I found Brand's book to be truly inspiring. People who get negatively obsessed with (non malignant) physical discomfort face the challenge of reconfiguring their perceptions about pain. Dr. Brand not only lays the groundwork for changing the context and meaning of pain - He does a good job of exploring the modern day paradox that more (ie overindulgent, materialistic, obsessive pursuit of creature comforts) is often less (in terms of true happiness). A great read!

Not as helpful as other books out there
I found the descriptions of the personality types good, but the practical advice in how to deal with those types and specifically the combinations of types lacking.
I went back and read some of my other child development books and found they not only had a lot of the same information, but much more practical advice in how to deal with them. Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's Kids, Parents, and Power Struggles is a terrific one. The information on the temperament types is more brief, but again, you can get the gyst pretty easily, and the practical side is much richer... and that, for me, was more important. In addition, the Power Struggles book also covers the parent's personality type and how to work your temperament WITH your child's and know where the danger zones are.

Fascinating insight into children's behavior
Even though I am only an aunt to two children - and not a parent - I found that this book provides valuable information for anyone dealing with children. Dr. Carey dispells the myth that babies and children are 'blank slates' that can be regulated, scheduled and expected to behave in certain ways. One of the most heartening aspects of the book is that Dr. Carey shows both the "positive" and "negative" aspects of each type of termperament he identifies, avoiding completely the categorizing of any sort of personality as 'problematic.'

His argument against the use of Ritalin is very persuasive, as so many of the children prescribed the drug are actually exhibiting behaviors that are within the range of "normal." Parents having "trouble" dealing with their child's behavior would learn a great deal from this book, particularly how modifying their own actions can influence an individual child's "fit" with his or her environment.

The writing is quite accessible, with concrete examples to illustrate the key points and strategies that can be applied when dealing with children. I've recommended this book to several of my friends and colleagues with children, and they have all found it thoroughly useful and informative. And I, merely as a party interested in behavior and children, found it an accessible and fascinating book that taught me a great deal about how to deal with my own niece and nephew!

temperment analysis is a powerful tool to figure out a child
this temperment approach makes sense of a lot of my two children's behavior over the last few (9 &5) years. I've seen way too many children on ridelin and agree with the author that temperment has to be considered before we start doping up our kids with speed to make them temporarily easier to deal with. The case studies are carefully selected and get across the author's theories effectively while making the book understandable to any parent interested in children's behavier.

Book contains no relevant info on fatherhood.
I purchased this book for my husband, but I'm very disappointed. It offers no suggestions to help a new father spend more, enjoyable time with baby. Fathering is scarcely addressed. Its attitude toward breastfeeding is hostile. Breastfeeding is described as controversial. Some of its' passages border on dangerous misinformation. It implies an endorsement of feeding baby cereal a month before the pediatrician recommends you do so; that ashtrays be kept out of reach rather than giving up smoking all together. States you will buy a bigger car seat at 8 months when baby weighs 20 pounds, but fails to clarify an infant must ride in a rear-facing seat until both 20 pounds and one year of age. It states you may give eggs and honey to a baby 8 months of age. Neither are safe till baby is one year old. Four of its' twelve chapters are on money management, but it fails to discuss life insurance. Its' coverage of stay at home parenting does not take into account typical daycare costs and other work related expenses.

GREAT BOOK
This was the best, most enjoyable book that my husband and I have ever read We couldn't put it down! A must have for new Dads!

Helpful, humerous and required reading for new dads.
As was true of his previous work, Crib Notes for the First Year of Marriage, DeMorier brings his special blend of humor and wisdom to this guide to early parenting. He presents the early months of fatherhood in an insightful, helpful fashion which functions as a practical guide as well as a reminder not to take this major life change so seriously as to not enjoy it. Tips on buying for baby, savings bonds and college funds are included with practical hints on helping Mom stay sane and assisting with infant care. DeMorier liberally sprinkles all this really useful stuff with a self-deprecating wit that makes you keep on reading. I recommend it to any new or expectant father.

Plodding writing style and factual errors
Hulsey manages to make a fascinating period of our history boring. His writing is plodding, and minor factual errors seem to have slipped through the editing process.

Beyond "a billion here and a billion there . . ."
I was attracted to this book looking to expand my knowledge of a key historical figure, who three decades after he left the stage, is perhaps best recalled for the quote (perhaps apocryphal): "a billion here and a billion there, and pretty soon we're talking about real money."

Byron Hulsey's work is less a biography than a chronicle of Dirksen's long career in public life. Certainly, we are provided some basic details on his upbringing, personal life, and political campaigns. However, the overwhelming focus is on Senator Dirksen as a practitioner of "supra-partisan" politics, a term Hulsey coins to capture the period of political consensus and harmony that extended from the late 1950s through most of the 1960s. Hulsey depicts, time and again, how Dirksen, the Republican leader in the Senate, collaborated with the Democratic Kennedy and Johnson administrations to forge legislation and advance America's interests during the Cold War.

The election of Richard Nixon in 1968, Hulsey observes, ended the supra-partisan consensus, and ushered in a new period of acrimony and heated partisan division that continue to mark public life to this day. The ascension of a younger generation of legislators -- less deferential to the genteel traditions of the Senate -- and the aggressive Investigative Journalism ethic were contributing factors in the demise of supra-partisianship.

Fittingly, Hulsey observes, three major exponents of supra-partisanship passed from the public stage within a year of each other -- LBJ through retirement and Eisenhower and Dirksen through death.

This book opens a window on a bygone era, and will make for enjoyable reading for anyone interested in the workings of Washington, DC in the 1950s and 1960s.

How the Executive and Legislative [can] work together:
This is a great book by a highly skilled and discerning author. Hulsey definitely brings 20th Century American politics back to life!

This second edition is updated for 2,000. 190 pages with hundreds of large, full color, sharp photos. Major topics include: Who Can You Trust?, Manufacturers, Antique and Machine Mades, Rarities, Marble Boxes, Christmas Cards, Clubs, Paper Items, etc, etc. A great reference for marble fans.

A Must For the Beginning Collector
Grist has made it easy for young and old alike to discover the wonderful world of marble collecting--without getting taken to the cleaners. Not only does this volume throughly describe how to identify various marbles, it pictures many of the common marble varieties with very clear, full color, closeup photographs. Especially beneficial in identification is Grist's description of the manufacturing process which helps one understand why different marbles are marked the way they are and dispells a common myth that marbles must be perfect to be valuable. This volume did not earn a fifth star only because it seemed so short, but it is indeed a great addition to a collector's library.

"The" guide for marble games, sets & piece collectors.
Everett Grist's Big Book Of Marbles appears in its second edition to provide excellent photos lending to marble identification: a fine art. Pages identify styles, makers, and include values for games and sets.

Five Steps to Forgiveness: The Art and Science of Forgiving

Words of Wisdom
I have long been a distant observer of work in the field of forgiveness, so naturally I was interested in reading Dr. Worthington's latest efforts. I was exceptionally pleased to see that he makes no unrealistic promises on individual success, but does offer a way for the individual to learn to deal with his/her own wounds and ultimately forgive the transgressor. He does an excellent job of outlining each of the vital steps to both forgiving and reconciling old wounds. His inclusion of real life examples, both from his own life and the lives of others, on how (and when) to implement these steps, gives this piece a personal touch that allows the reader and the author to relate to one another. In short, this book is a worthy addition to the scientific field of forgiveness, and a powerful psychological tool that we could all benefit from.

I Forgave Myself and My Ex
I actually got hooked by this book looking through it at a bookstore. The author tells a great story about how he forgave his mother's murderer, something I don't think I could ever do. I had hated my ex-husband for years, and I had tried hard to forgive. I read a lot of books on forgiveness-both religious and self-help. This is the best I've read. I liked his five steps. They were easy to do and easy to remember, but the best thing was his sections on forgiving ourselves and on talking about old wounds with others (in the last half of the book). His whole approach was really practical. The book was written well, with lots of stories and several laugh-out-loud stories. I have tried to do what the book recommended and I seem to have been able to forgive myself more than ever and to forgive my ex. I don't think I'll ever get completely over our fighting, but at least I could let go of some of my hate and feel some empathy for him. I think this has been pretty much a life changer for me. I recommend this book highly.

A Golden Book
Dr. Worthington's latest book is certain to lead the reader forward on the path to forgiving another. Five Steps To Forgiveness offers a plan that works when applied to the heavy burden of pain, anger and rage that many carry around. Just as a diet and exercise can do much to reduce unwanted weight. Anger, hurt, pain and rage can cause the bearer's spirit to be weighted. Interpersonal relationships suffer when we have unresolved issues. Five Steps To Forgiveness; The Art and Science of Forgiving is a wonderful resource to enable the reader to begin to rid their spirit of the heaviness of pain, anger and hurt that others have inflicted.

A wonderful gift for those you treasure.

unfinished mastery
let me first say: some of these stories are truly great. the collection clearly shows great imagination, great writing, and a vide variety of original stories. yet, there is something... I don't know. many of the stories seem so unfinished. too abrupt, too short, too lame descriptions. again and again stories seem to lack one quality, destroying it, or simply having just a little bit to little to recommend it. i don't know. just didn't quite get into it i guess. perhaps it's just me.

Careful - it bites
Bierce ranks with Poe and Lovecraft as one of the greatest American writers of horror stories. This collection presents a selection of his supernatural tales, leaving out the Civil War stories for which he is perhaps better known. The first story, "The Death of Halpin Frayser", is a genuine nightmare, and well worth the price of the volume on its own. But the book also includes Bierce's genre-bending experiments with science fiction, "Moxon's Master" and "The Damned Thing"; the cynical Rashomon precursor "The Moonlit Road"; the apocalyptic "An Inhabitant of Carcosa" and "The Eyes of the Panther", a lycanthrope story (maybe) which grows more unsettling the more you think about it, as well as a number of minor works which may be hard to find elsewhere. The only real flaw is E F Bleiler's sanctimonious introduction, which seems to attempt to escape the satiric snap of Bierce's work by repeating unpleasant (and largely unreliable) opinions of the writer. Watch out for this book - even the cover is scary.

Ambrose Bierce's Ghost and Horror Stories
This book should be considered a classic for all that it offers (and for such an unbelievably low price!) Better than today's masters of macabre, Bierce goes deep into the mind of macabre. His stories make you contemplate the truth of the existence of what he writes about. If you want truly "deep" horror, I would highly suggest the works of Bierce and this book is a great place to start.

moses the mystic
See deeper into the mystical life of moses. After reading this you will never read the biblical books of Moses the same. The saint brings to life the hidden work of God that you dont get from reading the scriptures externaly. He shows that everthing that moses did had deep meaning and shows the way for us to find union with God.

Great Book By a Great Man
St. Gregory of Nyssa, one of the early Church fathers, has really nailed down the Life of Moses. Not only does he give you a summary of his life, he takes the time to discuss both the symbolic and spiritual imagery present throughout Moses' Life. Through reading this book you can come to a great understanding of How God really worked wonders in the Life of moses in the vindication of His people Israel. In reading the bible texts, without even knowing it, you may miss many important symbols, but Here Gregory lays them all out for you in an easily accessable way. Even if you are not experenced in reading Patristic Litature, This book will appeal to both your literarly and Spiritual Side. A book i would recommend to anyone seeking to learn more about the life of the man that Led the Exodus.

What to strive for!
The Life of Moses is two books in one. The first one deals with the history of Moses. The second takes accounts from this history and explains their meaning. Gregory not only demystifies Moses' lifeby explaining the symbolic meaning of it's events("The master of deciet endeavors to turn the drink of the Hebrews into blood by polluting it with falsehood",page 69), he also encourages the reader to apply the beliefs to his/her own life("The firmer and more immovable one remains in the good, the more he progresses in the course of virtue",page 117). He even explains why God resides in the heavens("The divine is by it's very nature infinite, enclosed by no boundry", page 236). This is a very good book for anyone in the Judeo-Christian community, but need not be limited to that group alone. It is thought provoking enough to appeal to theologians, and the heavy use of metaphor reminded me of some of the writings from eastern religions.

Biased towards environmental careers and not much else
I'm going to offer a point of view different from the rest. I think this book focusses almost exclusively on environmental issues, and practically equates "making a difference" to "saving the environment". Well, yes, there are remarks about "improving society", but no clear path to doing any of those things. (...) The book does not contain any lead into careers that address world poverty or undernourished children or any of the other burning issues that affect the world everyday, unlike a dwindling dolphin population. Not that I don't think that a dwindling dolphin population is an important issue, but it is less important than starving children groping through some rubble heap in search of food. In fact, unless that part of the "starving population" is reeled out of poverty, they will continue to have dire impact on the environment faster than any socially-responsible fund manager can write out "green" dividend checks. This book provides "first-world denizens" the distorted view that fixing environmental issues is all there is to it (and calls itself "The Expanded Guide"). This is most likely related to the author's own background and focus on environmental issues. But it doesn't measure up for me.

Excellent!
(From Planeta Journal) - This is a guide to "creating careers with a conscience." Can we ask for anything less? Authored by Melissa Everett, this second edition is an excellent resource guide for anyone interested in making the world a better place. The book provides a 10-step program for career development and offers advice to career counselors. It is an imaginative and valuable tool for anyone thinking about their career. Highly recommended.

This is one of the best career guides ever written.
Melissa Everett has done all of us a great service by writing this book. Her ten-step process alone is worth the price of admission. As a career advisor with The Environmental Careers Organization, I tell anyone interested in a socially-responsible career - get this book!

Animal covered dishes et al.
This books loses stars for two reason. The first reason being the book has too many non-animal covered dishes. A book titled ANIMAL COVERED DISHES should be just that! The second reason is the lack of in-depth information regarding the makers of the various dishes displayed. Many times the examples given are not always helpful considering the wide range of reproduction on the market. One never gets the feeling Grist writes about these dishes out of interest rather than the monetary value they possess. Kudos are given for the large pictures, clearly photographed and nicely captioned. Perhaps more of the space could have been used for information? More of a coffee table book than a collector's guide.

Recommended for easy identification of styles and makers.
Everett Grist's Covered Animal Dishes provides an excellent visual display with the nearly full-page color photos in front and the values listed in back. This makes for easy identification of styles and makers.
